So rocky from Raptor boats came out earlier this week so I could go drive the boat and let him know what I thought etc.. (More on that later). And he brought his friend Dave with him.

Dave tells me he has a present for me and hooks this little box up to my TV and asks me for the wifi password.. Then he asks me "what do you want to watch? You can watch anything."

So I'm thinking WTF? Sure as shit though..

Want to watch Dexter? Boom there it is.. Sons of anarchy? Yep. Old movies? Yep. How about movies that are still in the theatre? Stacy is queuing up that new movie "boyhood" as I'm typing this..

NFL, NBA, NHL... All the games real time.. Normal TV? 30 channels.

Remember when I said you can watch anything? From porn to Disneys Frozen.. It is on there.

So he goes on to tell me.. "Ya know how people pay per view fights etc?" All pay per views for free in real time..

This thing is bad ass. It is a straight up gangster cable box. Lol. Not that I much give a shit about it but I did ask him how illegal is this thing? He laughed, it is his company and they are perfectly legal because they are "streaming" from offshore servers.

We're in agreeance for the most part.

The recording industry sued their potential customers and where did that get them? The industry tanked. It was a "good ol' boy" mentality and they were resistant to change. They loved the days of the fat wallets (which I don't have a problem with), but they let their ego's and greed get in the way instead of strategizing to find a better way to provide a higher expectation. Instead of finding a different way to earn the money they went all in on their base and made them feel the pain.

Once they realized they cut their nose off to spite their face they came back begging on their knees. This is how iTunes, iHeart radio, and Spotify to name a few, were born. They gave the consumer what they wanted and learned to make a profit doing it a better way.

I'd like to think of it as the market correcting itself.

I think the cable/satellite providers are in the similar times as the early days of the recording industry. Have you tried to speak with your cable/satellite provider lately? It's an awful experience. They have entire departments that have negotiators in place to keep your business. If you're providing such a wonderful service why the crisis negotiators? I don't know how many there are but I've never talked to the same person twice lol

Maybe this is what the industry needs to experience what the recording industry had to learn the hard way. If the cable/satellite companies learn how customize a channel package to each consumer you may just stand a chance at improving your own programming in the coming years.

At the end of the day you're correct... It's a moral decision. But the outcome isn't all doom and gloom if the providers can see what us consumers see.

Power to the people

Until our government amends our current US International Streaming Laws, downloading content will remain a Misdemeanor that is not being enforced and streaming without downloading will continue to be the loophole in the laws written as they are. If you are able to stream content only you will have no trace of intellectual property left on your computer for anyone to see. This is why the laws are written as they are, there has to be something tangible to be sued. People who downloaded music from open sourced sites such as napster or limewire were sued by record companies and/or prosecuted because their IP address led them right to a computer filled with unlicensed pirated music that could be physically accounted for as a DOWNLOAD!

For those of you who are truly paranoid, STOP! Here are a couple comments.

Using the James Bond analogy whereby the producing company takes the financial risk and isn't rewarded. That would be like Skater building the perfect bottomed cat, then competitors splash it in an offshore factory. But it's legal because these companies are offshore and don't build their boats on American soil. Would that make it OK to then buy these boats and bring them to the US?

Second - Say I buy the James Bond series of movies at Costco, or where ever. I paid for it, Costco got their cut, the producers got their cut and it's all legal. As of the reading of this thread I'm no longer going to invite friends over to watch these movies with me because they didn't pay for them Along those same lines....no more PPV fight parties either

With respect to the DirecTV cards (or whatever brand) those cards were installed in the service providers device, I guess if they want to blow them up, it's their prerogative.

To me, this box is no different than downloading movies from Yaboon, or any other bit torrent service, other than the fact that that when downloading you actually have the content, which I presume is illegal. People have asked about the availability of recording the content. Why would you want to do that anyway, it's always available via streaming. No different than Nextlfix or most "on demand" services.

Just my observations/two cents.

I just spoke with the smart guy who works for me (not the dumb one)...he says XBMC-type devices like this have been streaming games and TV since before 2003, so this service in all likelihood isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

The long-term solution, is a-la-carte pricing. Then you could only buy the 2 or 200 channels you want and not have to pay for "bundled" content you have no interest in.

Your moral dilemma will then be solved.

I really like all the James Bond movies but the ones with Timothy Dalton, David Niven and George Lazenby. But I bought all of them on Blue Ray.

Well said. The boxes are a better way to bit torrent. I'm willing to bet if I put a link to the bit torrent for Expendables 3 on this site, people would scream at me how illegal it is. Saw an article that movie was available weeks before it came out in theaters. The box just takes the download out of the equation its the same thing. Hollywood is either going to give up making big movies or go after those stealing their content.

For those who understand how bit torrents work, using a media box to stream content is most definitely the safer way because you are not leaving a footprint on your computer that can be traced back to you through your IP address.

In Canada because Direct and Dish not available here, black market cards became big business here. We had people open small sat stores, programming cards for people. The Canadian broadcasters, sat and cable providers, they got a law here making it illegal to descramble a foreign broadcast signal. Few months after the law, people still did it, but it went more under ground. Soon though Direct and Dish zapped daily. Now all those businesses have gone under

Since I lived in the states and still own property there, I have an SS number, American credit cards and bank accounts, etc. This lets me have Direct TV, although they think I'm in the states. Technically illegal under Canadian law, even though I'm paying for service. Its a grey area and with this I don't mind being a "criminal" Canadian TV sucks. Other Canadians like me, a few businesses in the states have multiple accounts and rent them to Canadians.

Because of the law a lot of video from the states, like HULU, Netfix and some YouTube video's are blocked. They have Netflix Canada, but its not as good. All broadcasters here must include a certain amount of Canadian content per day, hence why no Direct TV or Dish here.

I wouldn't be surprised if the states made it illegal to unscramble foreign broadcasts. Basically making these boxes illegal. But that's probably a few years off. Took Canada about 10 years of cable company lobbying before it enacted laws.

I'm sure our government will eventually have to act on this but from what I know its year away because fore they can create new laws that make streaming only illegal they will have to create some sort of International coalition banding all unlicensed content from being streamed. The problem with this scenario is based on where these streams are originating from like Vietnam, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, these countries will also have to be willing to enforce these restrictions which i don't think will be very easy to do, especially Vietnam where Mashup originates from.

I'm playing devils advocate a bit. My brother has said he is getting one.

True most people have big TV's and wait for pay per view or for it to hit HBO. But those services are also being hit because people can download it for free. I can also see its an expensive outing to see a movie when its a whole family. Me I love the big big screen of a theater. Bonus my theater has screening rooms you need to be 19 to get in. So no kids and beer!!!!!! Its still a better experience then home.

I was thinking of getting this myself, mainly for old television shows, especially ones that are not on Direct TV and the DVD's are not available.

You can guarantee the servers will be gone at some point. Same thing happened to hacking Dish.

Not necessarily, these servers are located in countries that don't recognize US Laws so even if one day our government make "streaming only" illegal doesn't mean the servers will just magically turn off. This technology is only evolving and we are in the infancy stages of development. In the near future crazy crazy stuff going to make this so freaking insane it will be like a out of control virus with no cure in sight. I have personally seen XBMC evolve 10 ten fold just in the past year. Where do you think it will be in another year?

Because of how it works.. It is working off offshore servers and there are 100's of them. The rest of the world doesn't much give a shit about direct tv or USA cable providers. The USA cable providers aren't going to Israel and Turkey or the 500 other countries to shut down servers.. The NFL wouldn't give a shit because there ads are getting paid for. If anything a wider audience increases the value.. Hollywood makes their coin at the box office, granted I am sure this puts a dent in some of the after sale stuff..

I just don't see how you could possibly stop it.

I will admit what I don't get is what is in it for the guys that own the servers..

I don't watch live TV, but all the Feeds on the box are East Coast.. So I wouldn't be expecting any local news. As for the rest, it pretty much kicks ass. You or anyone else is welcome to come by my house and fuck around with the magic box if ya want to try it out.

I have been using it for "live" streams of some cable channels, movies and all that but I use an Over The Air digital antenna for local TV.
