I'm sitting here having lunch, watching a show called Unsellable Houses.

People are trying are trying to sell ridiculous places, and wonder Why they don't sell!

Like no doors on the bathrooms, Formica countertops, and rock finishes on interior walls.

Then these two twin sisters come in, fix all the stupid shit, and end up selling the house for 100k more and usually in a couple of days!

So what's the problem???

People don't know how to do jack shit anymore these days!!!

One place had Beautiful hardwood floors, underneath Formica and shag carpet flooring.

How hard is it to rip that shit out and refinish some hardwood floors???

(This is exactly what I did when I bought my Glendora house, and it looks a million times better).

Today, with YouTube, there is zero excuse for NOT LEARNING how to do pretty much anything.

The problem is...

Nobody Wants to work anymore.

People don't take pride in doing things themselves anymore.

Society has come SO far from the days this country was Founded, and there is no going back.

The issue I see is, what happens when the “gotcha“ appears as it does on nearly any construction job? The person performing the work barely knows which end of the hammer but stayed at a Holiday Inn last night and watched a video online or a TV show that completes the entire project in less than 30 minutes and thinks they now have learned the same skills as someone in the trades for 10+ years.

The difference experience; knowing which tools to use, how materials are affected by certain environments or characteristics, various installation methods, etc. I’ve heard many times, the saying that Good work ain’t cheap and cheap work ain’t good.

I think a lot of people are too busy either making the money too pay for these things or spending it doing recreational activities and don’t have time. Plus, people may have the skill set to get it done, but maybe not done up to the standards that true craftsman do and they don’t try. Plus the cost of materials don’t really lend themselves to error or learning on the job.

I used to laugh all the time at these home reno shows in some of the shots of the crap finish work performed and some of the workmans methods. I can only imagine just how shitty the workmanship is through out the whole project.

I have found for many people, a house is just a dwelling. Not something to be proud of or keep nice. They just live in it. It's not a "home." Our ranch house in Menifee had not had any upkeep in 30 years. The house was 100 years old, it needed some love! Our Reno house had zero upkeep in the 50 years since it had been built. One owner. Still had single pane windows that allowed condensation and the condensation ran down into the wall, rotting the framing. Slider was installed backwards, so anyone could have broken in very easily. It was a flip, so we got it with new flooring (linoleum) and carpet and paint. That was it. Lipstick on a pig.

I had to go to DC last minute recently and had to stay with my boss in Virginia because there were no hotels in the .gov price range. The house was huge, but dated. She was getting ready to sell and I asked her how long she had been in it. 20 years. Well, I was being nosy and looked up to see if it was selling, and for how much, etc. It wasn't listed yet, but I could see the old listing's pictures. They had done NOTHING to the house. Same carpet, paint, and even curtains! That's does not compute to me. The first thing I want to do is go in and paint with my style and colors and get window coverings that match my furniture, etc. I want to make it MY home. Not just a place to watch TV and lay my head at night.

I think the electronic age has killed a lot of natural curiosity for kids these days. Seems many of them have no more ambition than to play games on the computer the TV or the phone. It boggles my mind so many young male adults can’t change a flipping tire. At least they can look it up on their phone.

Probably 2/3rds of NASCAR Cup drivers can't even change the oil. You're expecting the average young adult to tinker with things, be it a car, bike (motor or non-motor), home projects, etc??

Youth are more interested in YouTube, buying new stuff, and replacing it every few years to keep up with the latest tech. They barely want a car and would rather live in an apartment of some sort.

Gen X and prior generations cut our teeth on models, toys, and fixing/repairing bicycles, cars, boats, etc. Why? Necessity and everything broke down or required maintenance on the regular. And it was worth fixing! When we bought a home, all the experience transferred over to fixing / repairing / improving our home.

When you think about it, what really needs fixing? New cars can be driven 10 years with nothing more than some brake pads and oil changes (mileage depending of course). Bearings are sealed (no greasing Zerks fittings!), spark plugs last 100k miles, on and on. Bicycles don't require much either. Appliances are throw away junk after less than 10 years. A home requires a lot of maintenance / upkeep, but this is where the lack of knowledge and sheer laziness forces young people to hire someone to do the work. YouTube is great to learn how to do many things, but you still have to put in the work and things aren't as easy as they look once starting in on a task! Like said above, you hit a snag, it can require some MacGyver like skills to get out of the situation. lol. Some thoughts off the top of my head...

For a house about to be listed. My realtor and I did a walk thru Sunday. To go over what needs to be done before listing. I do it all the time and I would say on average. The sellers get $3 back for every $1 they spend on our list. Sometimes more.

I am currently fixing up a project house I got from a member here. Already 40k over what I thought I could do it for. But it's getting done right. And I have spent many nights until 10-11pm doing it myself to save on costs.

I own more tools than all my contractor friends and subs combined to make jobs easier and do it right no cutting corners.

These shows are just that scripted for viewers. If I had a camera man I bet I could produce a true no BS Get shit done show that would be a value to homeowners to watch. Real costs, real problems and the Right way to fix it.

I’ve done a kitchen remodel, and almost finished with a bathroom remodel. You can’t rush this stuff and do a good job.

All it takes is time, money, and for the materials to be in stock. Getting all 3 together in one room is tuff.

It was a slow trend. How many public schools middle and high school offer wood shop, metal shop or auto shop. I had metal shop in middle school learned to use a metal lathe, welding, wood shop using lathe in there a well.

Art teacher got the school to let him start the class. He's not your typical art teacher.
My son likes the class. Last week he was learning about framing. He knows I'm a fairly handy dad. But I don't think he realized I know my way around a framing job. I'm in the trades but he doesn't like learning from me.
Eventually the curriculum will go on to replacing outlets, lights, final plumbing, drywall patches ect.

The school has a beautiful woodshop. It was one of the reasons I was excited for them to go to school there. The year before he started the shop teacher retired and they haven't replaced him.
That was 3 years ago.

Yeah well I remember shopping at Price Club when there was no gas. So I just might be one of those amongst us however I fully understand how the long hose works. Perhaps they should have owned a boat with dual tanks but that would likely make them a statistic.

That sucks. The liberal school mentality is we don't need "shop."

At some point in the next 20 years finding someone to build a wooden fence may become a challenge. I've been looking for a 25 year old to teach him everything I know and he will have a productive life and make some money. Then say a week later... "what happened to the new guy?" I should add. Our county is pretty middle class. Neighboring counties are mostly upper to upper middle class. No kids at my kids school are rolling in BMWs, Teslas, Porsche ect. No kids rocking fancy clothes or going to the salons like neighboring county.
My nephew graduated high school in thd Neighboring county. He got a large scholarship that was put up by a private doner that saw the need for trade school. He was the only kid that graduated that was planning on going to trade school.
He ended up joining the Marines. Only kid out of over 200 graduates that went in to the military.

My parents saw a different path for each of their kids. I had two brothers who took shop classes, but they thought I should take more of an “educational” path. It pissed me off to no end at the time, and I still sometimes wish I’d taken shop classes, but I did end up in a good spot career-wise, so maybe they knew more about me than I did.

Eventually I somehow managed to learn how to do a lot of repair tasks on my own….one of the joys of home ownership while young and on a tight budget. I even ended up rehabbing flipper houses for a while; repairing dry rot, plumbing repairs, installing doors and windows, roofing, trim work, siding, etc. Point is, if someone wants or needs to learn, they will, whether taught in school or not.

We had a nice wood shop in high-school. Not sure if they still have it at Torrance high. I was the teacher aid one year. Was in that class all 4 years. By Senior year I built a cherry dresser. My teacher brought in his boat. And I built all new pieces out of teak for it. He would let me skip the classroom portion and just go straight to work each morning.

I built a shop at my Moms during that time. And bought every tool we had in the wood shop. Still have them. Got blue prints for my new shop. But halted that trying to buy a commercial building. One day I will have a huge shop to build whatever I want. Just taking longer than planned.

My kids were shooting a .22 at 5 years old. Some of the Scouts had Never shot a gun before shooting sports weekend! And all of em had a good time.

I taught my son to use a sawzall, when he was in grammar school. My wife was Not impressed, but he figured it out with no issues.

My kids grew up camping in my toy hauler. The first Cub Scout camp out we went on, my son was gathering up all his playstation games and I had to tell him ...

Nope. Electronic are not allowed in Scouts.

WHAT??? We are taking the toy hauler, right???

Nope. Just tents and sleeping bags. He thought he was going die.

He ended up having a BLAST! I couldn't tell you how many camping trips we went on. And how many different things he learned, working up to his Eagle Scout rank. Things they don't teach in school.

I kept my kids busy, JUST so they didn't have time for drugs and all that.

I see now, it served a few other purposes as well. Cool.
