At first I thought he got zapped by the way he jumped back.
He better go to Vegas while his luck is in the full-on position.

I'd suggest he pick up a handy pocket train schedule, memorize it, and synch it with his "alarm" watch before walking out on the tracks.......Or better yet, just stay the hell off the tracks.:yikes

When I went back east for locomotive engineer class they were preparing us for ?it?s not if, it?s when you strike a trespasser?. They showed this as one of the lucky ones

Earlier this summer a local guy committed suicide via locomotive......Not a pretty site to happen in the middle of town.

When I was growing up, a group of kids liked to play chicken with the passing trains. They'd see how close they could run in front of them. A kid tripped and lost a leg putting a stop to the foolishness.

Got to be tough on the engineers to see these acts of stupidity and powerless to stop them.:grumble:

Usually.

Noted.

LOL, I dealt with a relatively slow speed one recently, guy was struck and throw clear at about 25 mph. got up and walked away. Homeless dude, pickled.

The engineers are actually listed on the reports as witnesses since they're not actually "driving" the trains.
We had one a few years ago, guy got obliterated just into the city limits. I was talking to the train operator, he'd just been tied up 20 minutes earlier for 4 hours because they struck a car that rolled down the 101 onto the tracks:smackhead
I've only been on one train in my life and that was from Heidleburg to Paris on a bullet train and that was smooth but from what I gather taking the train in Ca is kinda a nightmare with all the stops and delays and pretty good chance you're going to hit SOMETHING.

I have yet to be operating when we hit someone but i was in the loco when we hit someone. its surreal event.

issue with CA passenger trains is that we share the tracks with the major RR (UP, BNSF) so were all trying to get around each other. Amtrak east coast has a completely closed corridor (no crossings at all and completely fenced in) from Boston to Washing DC. they have minimal delays and mostly 4 main track territory unlike here where it is mostly 2 main track and some 3 main track.

I've seen countless train vs ped collisions and I can say, the train usually wins:eek

I remember one night, Amtrak 703 struck a guy just outside of Fresno. The conductor made the long walk back to check on him. Once he found him, the guy jumped up and said, "I didn't get hit by no train!" and bolted. Pretty sure he had warrants on him. Conductor said he could see marks in the dirt on the train confirming at least a glancing blow.

But yeah, most don't live. However, I'm surprised at the number that do, even after what the crew describes as a direct hit.

I was riding the Metrolink home from work one day when we hit a transient in San Dimas. For those that ride the train and know SoCal, hitting somebody that far east in the county is horrible during rush hour as the coroner has to drive all the way from downtown in rush hour traffic. We were fortunate that the guy survived the initial hit so he was airlifted out and the delay was substantially shorter than if he had died.

My buddy was an officer for Claremont and they had a suicide by train where an 85yr old woman basically walked onto the track, knelt down on her knees and held onto the tie as the train came barreling in. Sad situation for the conductor who had to watch this with nothing he could do.

One was struck in Oro Grande shortly after the Vegas shooting. There were no coroners to be found. One had to be airlifted in from some far off place.

I work in the Claremont Village and I remember that day. People in the community were in shock when it was shown from the train's own video cameras that she did indeed commit suicide.

There was a jogger also killed at that crossing. The circumstances seemed unusual but I have never heard any more. I often see peds and cyclists go around the arms while I am on my way to or from work.

Suicide by locomotive is a popular method in the town I live in. It seems like every year or so someone does it. Most freight trains are doing 65MPH as they come through town. The person just steps out from behind a building, and gets liquefied. The town is shutdown for the whole day after that.
