Wife showed me a video, off Facebook. I don't have Facebook.

Look up Joe Allison, I guess?

Serious carnage, gotta be a dozen trucks burnt to the ground. Westbound side I think.
RIP to those that passed.

I went to sho low last Friday and I was almost to Kingman and they shut it down from Kingman basically to flag. I turned around and stayed at the Havasu house and stayed low and went through Gilbert up the 60. Good thing because they kept it closed until about noon the next day.

People drive like idiots in that weather. Semis haul ass and follow each other like it’s dry. It literally blows me away.

Last Friday they shut it down from Ashfork to Winslow. Yesterday I guess it caught them off guard. Visibility here was about 4-500ft, and we are just shy of 6,000ft.
I read last night's wreck was westbound at Devil Dog Rd. Pretty good grade right through there, that has the added bonus of a curve. As of noon today, they were still moving the wrecks, and rumors were it got hot enough to damage the road surface.

Sad that 3 lost there lives, but it could have been much worse. By the time that was taken, a lane was cleared. Any passenger car or pickup had already been scooped up. I've seen the wreckers push the semi's to the shoulder as well to clear the road.

The tow yard there in Ashfork had, and may still have, the contract to clear that stretch. They have skid steers with grapples and rolloffs to scoop stuff, rotators and even backhoes...massive yard of equipment and impound. Because I40 is a major commerce route, it's big money to keep get stuff clear and open again.

The wife and I were going to spend the weekend in Flagstaff, (plans from a few months ago). Not sure if we'll go, according to AZ511, I 40 won't open at least until Saturday, and that's no guarantee. We are taking our Jeep, should our 4wd be enough, or will I need to use the chains at some point? Anyone in the know, please chime in. Thanks.

Our neighbor in Williams can see the 40 and he said it's still closed and still snowing.
That stretch where the accident happened is scary even when it's dry.

3 weeks ago I planned to go to Denver this weekend driving from Phoenix. Still did it but drove through Tucson to Las Cruces to Albuquerque to another detour because I25 got shut down.

Last time I thought I was a bad ass with 4x4 and no chains in Big Bear while snowing, I nearly shit my pants. Never again. Chain up. Its worth the effort.

stormsDue to recent winter storms, Northern Arizona highways remain closed.
The Arizona Department of Transportation and Arizona Department of Public Safety are focused on public safety and working together throughout these winter storms. Interstate motorists should use Interstate 8 and Interstate 10 to travel through Arizona.
The following highways are closed due to winter weather:
  • Interstate 40 eastbound near Kingman and in Ash Fork (mileposts 71 & 146)

Absolutely agree. Before we moved to Havasu, we had a second home in Arrowbear, just down from Big Bear. 4wd Tahoe, ususally ended up using chains as well, when we went up there during snow storms.

To drive in the snow, just make believe you've got a big gulp in the cup holder filled 1/2" from the top with no lid on it and drive so that you don't spill it. I've driven in plenty of blizzard conditions with worn out summer tires on a 2WD truck with no chains and done just fine with snow/ice on the road using this simple rule. Easy does it. If it gets hairy....then just make believe your big gulp is filled within 1/4" of the top and don't spill it lol.

4WD/AWD is a hinderance IMO because it gives people a false sense of security and mostly ends badly....it'll only help you get moving, which is the least of your concerns in the snow

I grew up in northern IL. You learned how to drive in the snow and skitch behind the car and do donuts lol.
I didn't have AWD in my '67 camaro or any car back then.
FWD got popular.
Snow removal was part of my job and when I left for work it was early and I was first one driving on snow before the plows came out.

Not on the 40, but the 10....the wind was nuts yesterday. The old man was driving back from Phoenix in the old GMC FWD motorhome....he stopped a few times to duct tape the folded up TV antenna to the roof and the the windshield wipers to the windshield because he was afraid they'd blow off. Said he could do about 45-50mph into the wind without getting into the secondaries on the quadrapuke....10 hour drive home to LA

I hadn’t seen anything on this, however saw that westbound i40 from Flagstaff down past Townsend Wynona was at a complete standstill. Got into the crew office and guys were talking about an accident no clue the details or anything till seeing this thread. They were saying that the 40 had just reopened. The hotel as well all the truck lots where they park here in Winslow were completely packed i see why now. Sad ordeal.
