I was looking at 4Runners myself, but after all the research I ended up with a lightly used Lexus GX460 and love it. The Toyota 4Runners hold their value so much that they are only about $10k less a couple/few years old. Whereas the GX460 being a luxury vehicle which is basically a 4Runner with a V8 engine and more gadgets sinks like the titanic in the first 2-3 years and costs about the same after the initial hit. This is a work vehicle for me that gets 30k miles a year and I wanted to turn it into a play toy that I will leave at the river when I'm done. They are suprisingly good offroad, tows really well, very comfortable, and being a Toyota product very reliable.

I would absolutely stay away from Kia or Hyundai...drive around and look at the typical buyer's of those vehicles.

Can you wait for a Bronco?
My wife was set on a Wrangler, just said she'll wait.

Let me preface by saying I didn’t read every response, I bought my daughter a 2014 Santa Fe with the 2.0 t motor it crapped out at 20k the warranty replaced it but was tough to get them to do then it was real shorty work not factory stuff and had issues ever since we ended up lemon laying it due to all the trouble with that motor.

I now get lawyer letters for class actions regarding the engine troubles so not sure if it was a specific year or what but be careful we thought it was a no brained but became a night mare.

Camburg and others make some legit suspension setups for the them as well [emoji4]

I can't speak for all those different models, but I can tell you that we bought a 2016 Kia Optima brand new in 2016 to use as my wifes commuter, she commutes about 55 miles each direction through the Ortega Highway, which is a mountain road....her car is now pushing 185K miles and besides the accelerated wear and tear items like breaks, tires, etc...we have had ZERO problems with it, and still looks like brand new.

If you haven't gotten a whiff of what's brewing down at Hyundai headquarters, there's a something a bit, erm... unpleasant about the way the new Hyundai Palisade smells inside after a few thousand miles. For months, a number of owners of the South Korean marque’s flagship SUV have been playing a prolonged game of “who farted?” in an attempt to identify an awful, unidentified odor in the cabin, described as a pungent mix of old produce and used socks that gets worse in hot weather.

Haha thats funny. No funky smells for us yet haha just had a small warranty fix for the driver window seal causing a wind noise whistle. All taken care of and quiet now.

Wife wants a new car.

Her choices

Hyundai palisades
Kia telluride
Toyota 4 runner (The offroad pacakage)
Ford Explorer (Sport for my choice)
Dodge Durango (srt for my choice)

Her first choice is the palisades. Are they reliable?

Buy the 4Runner. Great vehicle, east to repair if necessary, parts a cheap and plentiful.

I have 190K on a 2008 and I've only done brakes and wheel bearings twice (at 90K and 170k). Easy work.

Best car I have ever owned. I tell people I used to work on cars, then I bought a Toyota and now I don't have to.

Bumping a thread here... Those peeps that are living with the GX460, you all still happy?

I want a capable 4wd with a bit of luxury that will last me till the end of the ICE age in 15 years.

I have a 2003 4runner that I bought with just shy of 180K on it about 4 years ago...botched head gasket job. I rebuilt the engine and aside from a questionable cat on one side that’s fucked up do to contamination from the broken timing chain...its been flawless for 40K miles...just rolled over 220K. The wife drives it easy, if I run it hard for bit...it gets the EGTs up and the cat starts working again enough to pass the monitors, so I do that every 2 years before smog time.
It’s thrashed and mostly worthless, so there’s no point in ever selling it. Plan on driving it for another 10 years.

toyota builds a good car and stands behind them. Buy once cry once.

Here's my .02.. My brother has a 2020 Kia telluride it's really nice for the price point. I've personally driven the vehicle several times and I was impressed by the the amount of options this car has and how well built it is, plus I think they look trick almost like a range rover.

We own a 2020 Ford Edge St. My wife totally loves the look of it and was tired of her Ford Edge. The explorer ST is a rocket ship and handles amazing for a mid size SUV. Seriously it's a blast to drive in sport mode, manual shift with the paddles shifters.

I just bought a 2020 Hyundai Sonata for a commuter car. I know it's not the Palisade but it shares all the electronics with the Palisade and I'm extremely happy with the car. I looked at the Palisade and prefer its interior features more than the telluride, but the body lines of the telluride are more attractive to me.

Lastly, I love the 4runner. We looked at those briefly in 2018 but they lacked some of the electronic options my wife was looking for in a car. I wasn't particularly impressed with the motor options and fuel economy so we decided to pass. The cool thing about the 4runner for me is the resale value after use and the fact that you can get a ton of aftermarket parts for these and do all kinds of cool shit with them.

Our reason for choosing Kia:
AWD and price was the concern for 2 of the kids in the family paying cash.

Kia/Hyundai have overcome their past engine issues.
They’ve improved their products and a hell of a lot more power now too. Engine options galore.

I’da preferred the kids buying Toyota’s but the Kias were almost $10k cheaper OTD so with a little help from us they have no monthly payment. If resale is a issue we keep cars until they die.

AWD Kias with factory lockers are more 4WD like BTW if that matters. AWD Kias also come with skid plates and the lower AWD Tupperware is a trimmer good looking design with excellent break-over angle clearance.

They live in rural Nevada above Reno hauling kids and often deal with rain, snow on loose unpaved rural roads with potholes.

The few Kia owners in RDP that had issues mostly report in the past good warranty experiences. Most also report no issues.
Just recently helped one of the kids buy this AWD Kia. Runs amazing:

Only Kia would deal price on AWD. Toyota AWD take it or leave it.

I had a Kia that I drove back and forth from OC to havasu a few years ago. I never thought I’d say it but it was a great car.

The only negative about it was the road noise.

Service was always 5 stars too. In fact, I told a bmw service department to take lessons from Kia more than once.

In Nevada car dealers don’t do DMV the buyer does.
Our kids did the DMV online, printed the pdf, emailed it to the Kia dealer and a week later a reimbursement check arrived in the mail.

After we negotiated a final price on the cars I busted out my DD 214 and no sweat they knocked another $500 off.

Then my COSTCO card appears outta my wallet got us another $1000 off.

Their is a hell of a markup on these rides. A hell of a markup fo’ sho’.
