First post here so I'm still figuring out the posting process. I have a 2005 Merc 496 Mag in my 22 Daytona and I just installed a full hydraulic steering system. Everything works great no leaks, etc. test drove to confirm.

But, my question is, when I was installing the hoses I had a heck of a time getting the LOW pressure hose at the steering cooler to slide onto the fitting. The stock setup was a 3/8" hose to the Saginaw system from the barb fitting coming off of steering cooler, so getting the hydraulic braided hose over a barbed fitting wasn't easy and it is also just tightened down with a standard stainless hose clamp. Am I good to go with this considering it is the LOW pressure side or do I need to create some sort of stronger connection to the steering cooler and/or replace cooler with a "screw-in fitting" style instead of slide on? I attached a picture showing what style I currently have.

I am doing the same thing right now. My low pressure hose went on easy. I'm considering using two SS clamps just to be a little more anal about the connection. My old OEM steering used just one clamp on the low pressure side for 20 plus years. Had to cut the old LP hose off (it was basically rotten) and then cut the piece off to get it off.

Received, I'll probably double clamp for the extra security. Do you happen to know what the pressure on low side is? Or an estimate? I have heard anywhere between 5-20 PSI. Don't know how correct that really is.

Unfortunately, I do not. Post up if you find out for sure. Would at least like to know. What system did you install?

The low pressure side is just that, low pressure. There is no restriction as it just heads back into the reservoir. A single worm clamp is plenty sufficient. When you say "braided hydraulic hose", are you referring to a rubber hose with internal braiding reinforcement? I assume you arent using hose with external braid for AN fittings. Post a picture of it if you can. What system did you use?

Sorry for the late response. I am using the Mayfair full hydraulic system. Seems to work great so far and yes, just a rubber hose with internal braid not AN hose. Boat is stored in Havasu otherwise I would attach a picture.
