Besides water only have 20 gallons on hand but I know where to access plenty about a mile away. We have food for 6 people 3 months easy. We have been using up some of our canned stuff to fight food prices or we could go longer. I have a 2 generators and 40 gallons of fuel. Fire wood, and a shit load of propane.

I misunderstood reading your post that you had all that food and weren't prepared with any backup power --- seems you're well prepared

been about 2000 death from hurricanes.

my guess would be though that if we had a REALLY big one, 8.5+ in LA, SF or SD, the death toll would be in the tens of thousands in a 60 second period.

You were prepared for the situation, and a situation that is a fairly common issue in higher elevations. What if, instead of 12-15 inches of snow, your same area received 12-15 inches of rain? Different situation entirely when it comes to preparation. If you have all the gear, but your house is ripped from it's foundation, what then? Many of these people were told the hurricane would take a different path. Many more had been through other storms, but none like this. I'm more prepared than most, but I have no illusions that I am prepared for everything. If some biblical type flood washed my home away, none of that matters in the end.

Funny you mention 12-15 inches of rain. About a year into home ownership we got a monster storm during December that wasn’t cold enough to snow so it was all rain. I happened to be out of town when it happened and I came home to find my basement/buildup flooded. Had to have ServPro come in and pull out carpet and drywall and dry everything out. Took a couple years to get the money to put the basement back together (insurance denied me as “surface flood”).

The following summer I revamped the drainage around the house and beefed it up. I also replaced the basement carpet with outdoor carpet. And I now own about 30 sandbags for additional protection when needed, if I can be around to prepare for a Pineapple Express event.

Haven’t had that problem since and we live had some pretty major rain storms since.

Live and learn I guess, and if I had a house in a hurricane area I would probably rebuild it on stilts.

I hope the info is wrong but hundreds of bodies popping up from the mud or in vehicles that were overcome from the flood is what we are getting.

Not making light of the situation but I thought I heard that flooding can cause cemeteries to release bodies? Any chance some of these people (popping up from the mud, as you say) were already dead and buried?

So in past hurricanes you see the coast guard doing rescues and there helos all over but I have not seen any video of the military helping in this situation

I don't know what regulations are in different areas, but that is what vaults are supposed to prevent. Not good at all though. I also don't know what the timing would be for the deceased to no longer be buoyant. Unfortunately that's all weird kind of stuff that I had looked into in the 90's...Pops' grandma was buried at a place that resold plots...there were some pissed off people, to say the least. Total scandalous BS...

Reminds me of when I first arrived at my new duty station, Ft Eustis Virginia. Had barely got my duffel unpacked and I was on a LCM along with a few others, heading up the James River for the glorious job of dropping the bow ramp to scoop up dead, bloated cows washed down by the vast area flooding caused by the perfect storm of TS Doria mating with another strong low-pressure cell --- rain, rain, rain. I lost my appetite for beef for quite awhile after that.
My point is, although there were no internet flap-jaw bloggers in 1971, there's a often quite a lot the military and the men and women that comprise it, are doing in the background for it's communities following such events that don't get press coverage. Almost everyone of our citys on the west side of the mountains is on or near puget sound at sea level with a sea level valley as a water highway! HOWEVER after the tsunami the traffic should be better?? Glass half full !!

Actually, they have created maps for this purpose, and I’ve seen Tsunami Evacuation Route signs on the Pacific coast and in the Tacoma area. Whether they’ve done enough to inform the public is another issue.

Civilian helo's aren't on the emergency action plan, so we can't use them...

I was just for about to post this. Sometimes first responders can get wrapped around their Incident Command infrastructure and not react to the situation very well. We've seen this in other disasters.

This is the “man camp” they have for the linemen.

He said some of the crews have found bodies.

Bless your son and his coworkers! We are fine in southeast Tennessee but people have been flying/driving supplies up to northeast Tennessee and western North Carolina.

My best friend's Mom in Black Mountain, NC and is completely cut off but running fine on generator power. I asked if I could go help clear her road but the problem is the road is gone, not blocked by trees. She seems confident she can make it until they get a temporary road put back but noone really knows how long that will be. Thankfully she was prepared because they are used to snow storms but hurricanes typically don't cause any damage this far from the coast so a lot of people were caught off guard.

Cleeter did make a decent point of the size of military helos and how they aren't equipped to deal with those conditions but still, there should be road crews and FEMA tents set up with everything anyone would need.. Gov't drones in the air scoping every nook and cranie. Please allow that in the world today, electrical distribution systems have evolved into different forms, voltages, and system designs.
The two main designs are North American and European. Although they perform similar functions there's distinct differences, like frequency and voltages to name two.
Certainly, no escaping the financial aspect and how it's needed here, but the main power distribution components, like transformers, came from Spain and other EU countries who share common system design parameters.
When I first started working as an electrician in Germany I found it surprising there were so many differences between our two systems, far more differences than similarities.
