getting prepared????.
My buddy in AL was trying to find accommodations and staging for 95 ambulances.

Last I saw 3/4 million people without power already.

getting prepared????.

My Dad retired from Southern Bell and he ran line crews all over the southeast U.S. After retirement, he was re-hired as a contract employee where he worked a few more years. After that, he went to work for other companies engineering fiber optic routes in and around major cities on the East Coast. One of his last huge jobs was restoring service in and around New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. He said the devastation from that storm was unbelievable. I don't think Helene will do as much damage, but it's going to leave a mark for sure.

I'm currently trying to stay in touch with my step-Mom who is on the West Coast north of Tampa. She said Helene just made landfall in the Big Bend and they are getting a lot of wind and rain. Whenever I receive any updates from her I will add to this thread. Stay safe folks!

What about the cars in the garage?! 😳
Didn’t get deep enough to get inside the cars but I forgot about my son’s Honda parked in the street. I managed to drive it over a block to higher ground but the carpet got flooded.
Haven’t heard from Hogie in st Pete, he keeps his Marlago on a lift at his Dads house. They had about 6’ surge. Clearwater got 8’. F’ing mess. My daughter in Ruskin has water in her house. My 86 yr old Dad’s house was just in the eyewall, he’s just south of Madison in the panhandle. I’d be shocked if he still has a house.

I wonder how it is now, my cousin lives in Naples and we cannot get a hold of them. Last Hurricane he said house to his left and right got heavy damage and his was untouched in amazement, hope he is that lucky again. Nephew lives in Miramar/Destin he said it is going to miss them just some rain and wind. Any more news from your FIL?
Naples..... bought a condo in the Vineyards. Asked salesman about getting hurricane insurance, he says not to worry we don't get Hurricanes in Naples.....😂😂😂😂
Sold it early 2004, couple of fun Hurricanes came though that area in the summer. Had built a house in Melbourne , Florida and weathered those just fine.

You nailed it, only locals seem to know of those other nearby communities. Our family is in Cocoa out by 95 and 520. I haven't been back in a few years, but have AMAZING memories growing up there. I love that part of Florida!!
My daughter lives in Wedgefield. Right at 520 and 50. Wedgefield Golf Course is her backyard.

Just saw this, pretty sad:

John Daly

8h ·

For everyone that has reached out, my family are all safe but all our homes are not! As water is pouring out of every crevice! Total loss and devastation after living here all my life! I still cannot imagine ALL we have lost but we are SAFE and all can be replaced!
Praise God!

NC reporting in.

Lake up stream is several feet over the spillway.
FB_IMG_1727458323117.jpg

Lake down stream is anticipating 10' over full pond!

Power is out, internet is out, neither have any sort of timeframe on repair. Dinner will be by candlelight, which usually ends up with someone getting pregnant.

Tree down on powerlines at end of the street

Some aftermath

That's nasty. Yet when you have more than weeks notice, how does that happen??? On purpose to get an insurance deal? You don't care about your personal items?
I will admit to not having ever had a boat in that environment but I would do everything possible to secure my boat safely.

Most don't have trailers for their boats

Near Bradenton-

Boat came off the dock behind the house, through the yard and lanai, and nailed a perfect resting spot.

Before I moved to Florida, I am not sure what I would have called that area of the home. I see you chose lanai. Sounds good to my west coast butt.

However, now that I have been in Florida for over a decade, I know exactly what that is. The boat came through the “pool cage” or “pool enclosure”. Lol

I doubt there is a company west of the Mississippi, that installs these things. Sure, they aren’t pretty, but they keep the bugs and critters away. Just in case the reader is wondering what their purpose is.

I thought the pool cage was to keep alligators out of the pool.

They have bugs on the west coast of Florida that should have their own FAA numbers. We call it the Bug Coast where I live.

I fixed my post to encompass the Alligators. It’s not a pool cage’s main purpose, but it does keep out the Alligators too!

Sure, we get a lot of alligators in pools in Florida, but it’s not as common as the news makes it out to be.

We did really good. We were on the generator for about 8 hours and only had the 1 section of fence damaged so we’re lucky, still more cleanup but not today.

A friend in Asheville NC. Talked to him earlier. 20” of rain in 24hrs. There a video of a U-Haul truck floating down a main road. Dams are at capacity and possible failure. Wild the damages from the storm headed that far north.

Low pressure + mountain lift and the rain can be crazy. In terrain that sheds water quickly.

Any new information on this
Still holding so far, according to this article. Water going over the top and around the side walls. Looks like this article is from about an hour ago. 6:30 pm eastern

As Helene weakens, the now-tropical storm's strong winds and heavy rain continue to wreak havoc across the Southeast U.S., including in North Carolina where at least one county has ordered evacuations.

Rutherford County's Emergency Management ordered residents who live on certain roads to evacuate to higher areas due to water overtopping the Lake Lure Dam, according to a Facebook post shared by the government office Friday morning.

Emergency officials warned in a 6 p.m. ET Facebook post that Lake Lure Dam water levels are now receding. Emergency personnel have rescued more than 25 people through "swift water rescue."

Hours earlier the department said water was "cresting the Dam and flowing around the side walls," emergency management said on Facebook.

"Structural supports have been compromised but the Dam wall is currently holding," according to the post. "Evacuations have occurred from the Dam to Island Creek Road. Evacuation sirens are sounding downstream of the Dam. Emergency personnel are working with the structural engineers and are going house to house to ensure all citizens have been evacuated. Evacuees are being transported temporarily to Ingles in Lake Lure."

Both updates came after the Rutherford County Emergency Management reported "catastrophic flows along the Broad River into Lake Lure" were overtopping the dam, resulting in major flooding downstream, per the National Weather Service (NWS).

Officials released a list of roads on which residents are ordered to evacuate. You can view the list on the Rutherford County Emergency Management Facebook page.

Emergency management also asked residents to remain home if they are not in an evacuation zone as "roads are hazardous with an insurmountable number of trees and electrical lines that are down," according to a Facebook post shared Friday afternoon.

The dam is roughly 30 miles southeast of Asheville.

west coast = lanai, east coast = screen porch.

Lanai. That's what my grandmother called the "no see 'ems" proof screened in area around the pool in Punta Gorda.

August in Punta Gorda Florida, Hot, Muggy and going into the pool offers no relief.... and it rains every afternoon.

Golf with grandpa, "mind the water hazards, they all have an alligator living in them"

But having your boat in the backyard at your private dock? Priceless.

42 years ago about $120,000. all in. Same as a tract house in the SF valley.

When we boat north our stop for lunch is Anna Marie Oyster bar. Anna Marie Island is closed and everything flooded. Our southern go to is Pop's Sunset grill. They survived, but others didn't. When we are at our winter place we go to St Armand Circle a lot and it got hit pretty hard.

If it hasn’t already been linked, look up Keaton beach FL to see what a real storm surge can do if your in the onshore quadrant.
