Mr. Cs daughter started a tangent so I thought I'd just make it a new topic.

I swore that I never wanted to go to college...parents "suggested" AP classes etc, but as far as I was concerned I was a hostage, not a student.

Towards the end of my senior year I got a job at a local feed and tack store. Fun throwing hay bales around. I worked there a year...before I realized that maybe this wasn't a "career path". I had gotten a line on a computer job, but they at least wanted you enrolled in college...so I tucked tail and enrolled in the local JC.

Parents we thrilled and amazed. Then the found out I was a music major...I told them when I found something better I'd switch...:swear.

After 3 years at the JC I transferred to a cal state. My folks are divorced so my mom bought tuition and my dad gave me some money for rent...although I worked 20 hours a week at the feed store and then a 7-11.

I actually graduated in 5 years but spent a couple more working at a credential and a masters...didn't finish.

Taking a year off was a very good thing for me...I'd recommend it to undecided folks rather than going to school for no reason.

No loans, tuition was $230 a quarter, dad sent $120 a month, I picked up the rest...

Baseball scholarship to Cal State Fullerton. After playing professionally for a few years I negotiated in my contract to have the remainder of my schooling paid for by MLB. I was lucky. College is getting expensive.

Went to work for a start up company in Valencia. The company took off and the CFO had a lot of faith in me. The company ended up paying for most of my college!! When he left to start up another hi-tech company I wasn't finished with school yet. He ended up offering me a job with the new company so I followed him and the new company continued to pay for my college... :D

Fortunate enough that my parents paid for me to go to Cal Poly Pomona. Not that my parents were rich but they too made too much money for me to qualify for financial aid. But I had to work. I graduated from HS on Friday and started work on Monday morning at 6:30 doing shipping and receiving at the company my dad worked for. Most of the kids of upper managemt worked there so it was fun for a while.

After doing that for two years I moved on to where I currently work. They had, and still have to this day. a program for college students where your work schedule was dictated by your school schedule. Of course what job for a college student isn't? However, this was/is a M-F gig. After graduating from college I was hired full-time and my total time here is 17 years...

I worked alot. my parents paid for school and books but I paid the rest. It was State so it was cheap.

it was easy finding jobs that worked around the school schedule as long as they didn't pay me too much ;)

I went to Cal Poly Pomona full time while working what was considered full time(at least 30 hours a week) at Wells Fargo Bank. With the full time hours, they paid for all my schooling(fortunately, Cal Poly's tuition was cheap enough at the time to fit within reimbursement).

Even with working full time, I still got out in four years exactly. :beer

My siblings and I were/are very fortunate, my parents told us they would pay for our college where ever we were able to get in. I had a brother and a sister that received athletic scholarships so my parents got off a little easier. They paid for my other sister and I just like they promised. I wake up every morning thankful that they even offered what they did much less did it. I don't even want to know what I would be paying for student loans from USC.

Graduated H.S. at 17, left for NorCal, and JC, got a job with a Water Well Drilling Co. to pay for being the costs associated with being alive while finishing up.
Got married, accepted to S.O., and off to the Academy.
Working was simply expected, by that I mean I expected it of myself and I believed everyone else did too. Parents helped a bit at first, but they really weren't in a position to pay my freight, and I did not expect them to.
Taking a year off would have jsut kept me on that rig longer.
That was a long time ago, tho. Mid seventies. Times have changed.

Parents paid tuition and books for SDSU and I covered the rest. My Son is two and we deposit $400.00 a month in his college fund, which I'm sure won't cover all of it when he's ready to "go away" to college.

The UC system isn't that expensive: ~$1,200 a quarter for part time study; so, I pay cash.

The next leg of my journey is going to be really expensive: ~$70k a year. The programs I'm applying to are mostly full-time; so, I won't be able to work, which will force me to take out loans if I can't get a fellowship.

Well I am in my final semester right now. My parents never went to college, so I had no insight on what to do or how to do it. I basically started saving from sophmore year of highschool working low paying jobs for about 30 hours a week. I really wanted to swim and play football, but knew I wouldn't be able to play, hold a job, and get decent grades. I went to JC for 3 years at OCC paying for all but one semester. "I think books and tuition came out to about $800 a semester so it wasn't too bad. I transfered to Calstate Fullerton last year for my final two years, and luckily I got a $1200 scholarship in highschool from high star test grades and bought into some stocks "$600.00" so I wasn't too shocked when tuition, fees, books, parking added up to about $2400.00 a semester. If you compare it to other schools it isn't too bad, but it's still a chunk of change to me. Basically I saved, that's how I got through it.

Tuition was paid for by the State of California. Dad paid for books, supplies, rent, food. Went to San Diego State University for Fall 1999, Spring 2000, & Fall 2000. At the end of that semester I decided to move home and get a part time job, and goto Golden West College (JC). GWC was like going back to focking high school, my part time job turned into 40+ hours a week, and after a 3 months of living back at home I couldn't stand it. So in Fall 2001 I returned to SDSU. Had a few jobs, but I plead the fifth!. In 2003 I was hired on at the Mission Bay Aquatic Center, as a Wakeboard & Water Ski Instructor :D did that up until I graduated in 2005!

Went to Merced College (JC) for two years parents paid for everything. I would come home on alot of weekend to help my parents on the ranch. Farming wasn't so great and they cut off all funds except for my gas card. Transfer to Cal Ply SLO worked part time and took out student loans to pay the bills. Oh I also met my husband back then and he helped me out alot financially. I managed to graduate in 4 years, but I only took the first summer off... I know if I took another summmer off I would quit school. It took me 10 years to pay back the student loans. :)

College? Hell, I didn't make it past the 8th Grade.:D

Just Kidding. Worked 40 hrs a week and went to school 40 hrs a week at the same time. Payed for everything myself. Graduated with Honors. Didn't have time to spend money or get in trouble. It was the toughest two years of my life but also the most rewarding.;)

As soon as I finished HS I tried to go to RCC but when I got my scores from the entrance exam (53), I decided that college wasn't for me. I got a job as a laborer on a construction job. That was in 1972. In the late 80s early 90s I decided to go back to RCC and take a construction technology course so I cold take the certifications to be a building inspector. Needless to say, I was going thru a divorce and couldn't concentrate on the schooling so I quit school. In 2002 I was injured at work and had to be retrained. I became a home inspector and that turned to a great job for about three years. All of the college classes were paid by me. I took all night classes so I could work a forty hr week. The retraining was paid by workmans comp

I worked building boats on Monday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday (12 hour days) and went to college from 7:30am-6:00pm every Tuesday & Thursday. At minimum I took 15 units. A couple of semesters I took 18 units. All done in two days. I hated school so I figured I would spend the least amount of time there as possible! I also paid my whole college tuition, parking, books, etc... I did live at home until Sr. year when I moved out. I got out of school in 4 years from Cal State Fullerton. :)

Hey, this guy is a copycat!

My parents never pushed me to go to college, so I went because my friends were going. I started working at Stater Bros when I was 16, so by the time I was 18 I was making pretty good money. College wasn't that big of a priority. I didn't do well my first quarter at CSUSB, couldn't handle the fact that professors didn't ask for a readmit slip and hardly went to class. I dropped out and started at the community college in January, would register for 3-4 classes and drop 2. I did this for about 5 years. Then in 2000, I decided to get serious and went back to CC full time. Got my AA in 2002, transferred to CSU San Marcos and received my Bachelor's in 2005. I think I quit Stater's in 2004 and began substitute teaching 2-3 days a week. I finished the credential program in 2006 and got a job that July.

We paid for the whole thing cash. I am a firm believer in not getting college loans unless there is no other way. State University is still a pretty good bargain. I think it's $1300 a semster + books and parking. My kids will go to college, but if they want to go to a private one, they'll have to get scholarships.

Started off wanting to skip college and go professional in hockey. I played WHL in Canada for a total of 2 practices and 1 game when I was injured. Since I was technically now considered a pro I couldnt go back and play college puck. That messed up the chances of me getting to play for Boston College. I went to a Sierra Nevada and decided school and Tahoe dont mix well. Came back to SoCal for JC, then to Cal State San Berdo to finish. My parents had to practically beg to keep me in school. I wanted to leave early and either become a land surveyor or cop. Graduated with a BS in Marketing and minor in corp finance mgmt.

I would like my wife to go back and finish her degree.

I got grants and loans, worked in the library, then delivered pizza for Dominos. My parents didn't pay a dime. I figure I delivered about 15,000 pizzas in under 3 years. The dreams about late pizzas didn't stop for almost 10 years.:D

It seems most people paid cash and went to state schools. I can't say my parents and my money was a waste, but I tell you I'd never go into hock for a music degree...or teaching or other profession that tends to be underpaid.

Makes sense to get the loans for Doctorates...IF the pay out afterward is worth it.

I'm telling my kids I'll pay for tuition and books at a CSU for 5 years. That'll give them an easy bachelors, a bachelors and a credential, or a bachelors and a year at a masters...and if they need to go to a private school they'd better start looking for scholarships.

I didn't know what I wanted to do after high school, so I spent 2 years working for a local sheet metal shop and going to school full time at Palomar JC taking general education classes that would transfer to any college. Got hooked up with a girl that went to UC Riverside, so I applied and got accepted for the winter quarter.

Mom and Pop's were strictly blue collar, and they couldn't help at all, so I had to work 3 part-time jobs during the school year. I worked for the campus Physical Plant in the electric shop every chance I got. The electric shop manager was an ex-UCR grad and was sympathetic to my plight so he let me work any time I could clock in for at least 2 hours at a time. So I'd take 2 classes in the morning, work 4-6 hours, and then take 1or 2 late afternoon classes every M-W-F. The second job was at Target as a night time stocker. I'd work 8-midnight or so, and every 8 hour weekend shift I could get. The third job was anything I could get at any time, and it varied all the time. From working in the library, lifeguarding at the pool, working in the dorm kitchens...well you get the idea. During the summer I would take classes and then work full time at the electric shop, and pick up any hours I could at Target.

Funny, I graduated from college 4 years and 1 quarter after high school with only $5000 in total debt. I got a job working for the same precision sheet metal shop right out of college and paid that off in 2 years. Married (and divorced) the girl I followed to college, and I am now on my 3rd tour with the same company! I guess I'll never learn. :smackhead

Community college was the best 10 years of my life. :D

I spent way too much time at JC also. Cerritos College….. :beer

My Dad helped pay what he could. I worked for the rest (unloading rail cars) . I went to Cal State Long Beach for one semester until I knocked-up my girlfriend and had to get a real job. Never went back ….. I think I needed 20 more credits. :smackhead

My stay at Arizona State is in progress and will be for another 12 miserable credit hours. Got decent grades in high school in Cali and scored well on the SAT's but didn't get into the program I wanted at Cal Poly SLO which I had based my entire future upon. Applied late to ASU where I was accepted into their business program. Had a real hard time taking the advanced business classes without any real interest in the topics so switched majors and didn't do much better. Had been working at a couple scottsdale bars and seemed to be having more success there;)

Moved back to CA for a school year and went to JC to get my $hit together. Now a couple years later I'm still doing the bar work but finally close to graduation and happy to get out of the "industry."

I was very fortunate to have a family account for school expenses but have payed my own way for the past 3 semesters.

A few pieces of advice from the student who fell through the cracks...
-Junior college is cheap and great for people who aren't sure what they want out of school

-Don't change majors, just deal with it. It cost me a year and plenty of aggravation in the advising office.

-Make sure the student actually wants to graduate. A year of hard work at a low paying 9-5 was all the motivation I needed.

Semester vs quarter...same money allocated to the (CSU) schools by the State.

I believe Mt SAC was $26 and $7 parking per semester...CSLA started about $170 and went to $230 a quarter. CPP is about 4K a year now...still cheap campared to any private school.

That was the average cost to going to school there per year, staying in the dorms. ( those numbers came from Cal ploy) Looking at thier web site, it sounds about right. its 1500 to register, 5k for the dorm( which is a steal if you can get in) and about 1500 for food per semester. Thats about what it was when I appiled in 99. Add in books, lab fees and other supplys and your right there.

I spent more on books then I did on tuition 3 out of the 4 years I went to school.( ARC, CSUS and finaly UCD)

I went to Faber College up until 1962 when myself and my fraternity brothers from the Delta Tau Chi house were suddenly expelled. Had we knew that we were on "Double Secret Probation" we might not have pulled the stunts that we did.

The following is a transcript from our hearing...

"We'll waive minutes and proceed directly
with charges against Delta Tau Chi.

The following charges are brought:

First, that the Delta house
did knowingly violate...the rules governing pledge recruitment...
by serving alcohol to freshmen during pledge week...and after established drinking hours.

Second, that for the fifth consecutive semester...Delta has achieved
a deficient aggregate grade point average.

Third...that the Delta fraternity routinely provided dangerous narcotic diet pills...
-to its members during--
...during midterm examination week.

And most recently...that a Roman toga party was held...from which we have received...
two dozen reports of individual acts of perversion...so profound and disgusting...
that decorum prohibits listing them here.

These are the charges
as recorded this day...November, 15. 1962

Faithfully submitted...
