That you were a car guy.

I was just filing up at Costco. There is a lady waiting next in line and her 5 yr old son rolls down his window and yells out "hey Mister, I like your Jaguar". Myself and the people around me all kinda laughed. Then I thought, this kid knew what kind of car I was driving just by looking at the back of it. So I walked up to them and said thank you to the little boy for the compliment. I asked him what his favorite car was and he rattled off 3-4. I told him I have always liked cars too. I told the Mom I wanted to buy the boy an ice cream for the nice compliment and gave him $5.

I was told by my parents that I used to tell them what year, make and model cars were when we would be walking through Disneylands parking lot. They said I had more fun there than inside the park.

When did you know you were a gearhead?

My older brother had a WWII Dodge Weapon carrier when I was about five. I remember the windshield being folded down and the wind splashing my face. Loved any kind of jeeps since. He also introduced me to motorcycles me sitting on top of the gastank, hanging on the handlebar.
This was about 1952

As long as I can remember. My dad was on a pit crew for a dragster so I spent a lot of time at the track. My first car was a 66 chevelle when I was 15:thumbsup

I was about 5, my uncle had a purple Pontiac Grand Prix with a white vinyl top. I thought that car (and my uncle) was the coolest thing ever!

A bunch of friends and I were just talking about this Friday night. I was way into anything with wheels or motors from the time I could walk. BUT when I was around 10-12 My dad and his buddies took me to my first drag race - I saw an air brushed headlight on a funnycar and it was the coolest fucking thing I had ever seen in my life! That's when I said fuck that astronaut bullshit....I want to be a custom painter :D

Very young maybe 3-4 years old my godmother bought me a Mercedes pedal car and it lasted maybe a month then I stripped it and was just a frame in less than a few months to try and make it faster. I used to drive it down the sidewalk haulin ass it was even involved in a drive bye lol. But when I was little I had every hot wheel micro machine and could name every car there was by year make and model. I still have the micro machines.

Dad was a serious gearhead, I can't remember not being one. Dad broke his right hand at work one time, it was in a cast and he sprained his left hand in the same fall from a fork lift he was working on. The next weekend he got me out of bed at about 7 am and walked me through changing the water pump on my Grandmother's '64 Nova.
I was 10 years old. The feeling of finishing the job, actually turning the key and starting it was indescribable. Wiping down his tools and putting them away with him afterword was a moment of pride I never forgot.
Many of those tools, Mac, Proto, and Snap-On, are out in his Snap-On top box in my shop right now.
He retired in 1978 and died in 1983...that tells you how old they are.
They will go to my sons someday.
Gearhead?
Damn straight, and proud of it.

About 3 years old. There's pictures of me falling asleep in dad's lap while he did brakes on our Oldsmobile.

My parents say I was about that age as well when I was naming cars. I do remember going to the Lions and San Fernando Drag Strips and watching my mom race her '64 GTO.

I was raised around hot rod boats and cars. I'm not talking about boats with ipods with lighted drink holders that weigh 8,000 lbs and only have 400 hp. :D

My kids (3 and 5) have their own car show AT the car the car shows we attend. :)

My dad put himself and 2 other guys in the 200 mph club before I was born. Most all of my childhood memories involve cars somehow...

As early as I can remember. Grandpa owned an auto parts store and my uncle worked in the back. The smell of gear oil has a comforting feeling for some reason:D

when I was about 7 and my dad scared the fuck out of me by strapping me into a 5 point harness in the passenger seat of his prostreet dart and proceeded to grab gears and burn through a set of rear tires at about 12:00 AM on a saturday night in Kearny Mesa in 1990.

it was almost as exciting as the first time I stuck my fingers in a chick when i was about 14.

Since forever. Dad was a grease monkey as well. My walls were plastered with the Hot Rod Magazines centerfolds that were all about funny cars back then.

I always knew what I wanted to do. And what I wanted to do was be a gearhead and build shit that went really fast. :thumbsup

My Dad and Uncle had some neat cars and I was looking through their Hot Rod magazines as far back as I can remember.

My SiL drag races and my grandson has grown up at the Drag Strips. He crawled around under drag cars since he was 5-6 years old and knew what he was looking at.....He was able to fetch the correct tool and wrench size since 6. Was always in trouble for loosening bolts and nuts around the house. My Daughter had her computor chair collapse when he was 5-6 when he got hold of wrench my SiL left on the counter.

He beat up his and his sisters' bikes "poppin'" wheelies and doing "burnouts" for years.

He's 17 now and works in his Dad's auto repair shop doing oil changes and minor repairs. If he had a certification he'd likely be as good or better than most of their hired mechanics.

Gearheads are that way from birth.....:champagne:

My Dad has 2 daughters, I'm the youngest. Can remember a boat/camping trip where my Mom and sister were sitting on the beach while my dad and I were trying to get the boat started. Junk in the fuel pump. They were whining and after Dad and I got it fixed he told them before we loaded up to leave we would have to test the fuel system...and we left them on the beach and did a few passes up and down the river. I got to drive for the first time. I was about 7. More interested in boy toys then girl toys my whole life. Got a fancy barbie doll one year and ended up hanging it from a tree by its hair and shooting it with a bb gun.

Very early on, my mom has pictures of me in the garage with an impact in my hands when I was about 5 "Helping" work on the '32. All of my early memories are around cars or boats that went fast...

I have never done anything else, what an idiot!:headscratch:

I can remember being into cars my whole life.
Getting kicked out of class for hiding car mags behind my textbooks.
Identifying all the cars I'd see on the roads.

Unlike a lot of you guys, my dad wasn't really around and had zero mechanical skills, or interest in cars, boats or anything motorized.
So it all came from within me.

It wasn't until my junior year in college that I discovered that I could actually make a career, and a good living, out of being a car guy, reading car mags, knowing all about cars and the auto industry.

I'm thankful for it, because I fell into this industry almost by accident, and really have no idea what I'd do for a living if I wasn't doing what I'm doing.

I've been riding dirtbikes since I was 3 and it all started around then. I've dreamed of offroad race cars, trucks, boats, hotrods, Harley's, you name it.

It really is a sickness....but I can't wait to pass it along to my son too. :D

To young to really know. Been around cars, boats and racing since I was born. Went to my first 500 when I was 3. Had a go kart by 5 or 6 and was racing a few years later. I was a gear head before I knew what a gear head was.
