Leaving your truck in a storage unit with your boat at the river. I have a crew cab diesel that I really don’t wanna drive back-and-forth to the river and if I store my boat out there I’d like to leave the truck with it and drive out our family SUV that gets better mileage. It’s not my daily driver and sits most of the year at home. Do you think that’s too sketch or would it be safe enough?

I’d only do it if I knew we were going out every other weekend or so. It wouldn’t be sitting too long enough to pull the batteries and I could always bring a jumper box just in case. I’d probably throw a couple apple AirTags on the truck and boat also.

I may be wrong here but I think the pulling the batts. was more a theft prevention method. pretty hard to start w/o batteries ya know?
you’re probably right. I’m not as smart as most people lol.

If I had the means I would have a higher geared gas engine 3/4 or 1 ton truck. Diesels need to be run and under a load. Almost all of the problems you hear about are from the grocery getter diesels.

We used to leave the boat in the water and a truck next to our toy hauler at the river . Some times we would get half way home and wonder if we locked the trailer door ! Never worried but that's part of trailer park life .

I wouldn’t pull the battery .
With a computer it could or will need to reset and relearn
Pull a wire connection off some where so it will not start
Just a thought I don’t know.

Me I would just leave it

Ive done it. I left a beater truck in my unit. I freaking loved that convenience. Why not? People leave their high end diesel coaches right in the same units next to ya.

How true that is. Last week my Denali battery died. The seats and all other settings are gone. There must be some kind if capacitor or something because the garage door settings didn’t go. I had a warranty beef so I think the battery was sitting dead for 4 days at a dealership.

If it was baking in the sun I wouldn't do it but if it were in the shade I'd do it in a heartbeat. Full coverage insurance and a kill switch would make me sleep easier. I bought a boat at a storage unit in Boulder and it was a fully enclosed pull thru long enough for the boat (42 Fountain) to be hooked to the truck (square body dually). The place is crazy clean and an air hose at the exit gate, I believe it was owned by the owner Hallett, Fred Inman, and someone else.

Sell it and buy a beater that can drag the boat to and from the ramp. Letting a nice truck just sit 99% of the time is a waste….save that treatment for beater trucks.

There are 5 million people in metro Phoenix whose new and old junk is sitting in the sun everyday in the summer year after year. I have a 2005 Chevy that’s been baking in the heat for 18 years.

Issues...

Fuel. Gas truck? Make sure you add your favorite fuel treatment. Same as you do with your boat. Diesel truck? No worries.

Batteries? Make sure you have a Quality tender on it. On a boat, you have a Perko Switch. They make cut offs like that for old beater trucks, but you don't wanna do that with an EFI truck.

I left my Durango at the river, and it was a PITA. Just wasn't worth the "convince". 🙄

And old carbed beater will be fine.

Security. EFI truck, pull the main and fuel pump relays. Carb? Pull the rotor out of the distributor.

Make sure your insurance is adequate also. If a thief wants Your shit, he's taking it no matter what you do!

My 06 Yukon xl stays attached to the boat in the barn 24/7 for the last 3 years. Awesome. I have seen a lot of tahoes/Yukons in the bullhead area Facebook page for under $6k. If I ever have issues with my drive out vehicle, I have a way to get home too!

Tons of stories about rodents eating wires when in storage. I’d do it if it’s on a slab & secured from rodents. But not out in the open or gravel car port.

Although an older v10 dually, I leave it in town full time. Sta-lube in the tank, trickle charger on the battery, space is alarmed and monitored, and there is a camera.

Seems a lot safer to me than keeping it on the street in So. Cal..

That is true. What truck do you have now, and what size boat? You might be able to find a GM 6.0L for a reasonable price. The 8.1L are hard to find.

LBZ duramax. what I’d like to find is a standard cab four-wheel-drive Chevy or GMC but those are ridiculously priced.

I wouldn't pull the batteries out. How much fun would that be, every trip, putting two batteries in your truck and pulling back out when it's 110 degrees? Especially on a lifted truck? I had that same truck and I recall having to remove plates to pull them.
Pull the fuel pump relay if you're worried about getting stolen.

Nice truck btw.

You don't need to pull your batteries. I had my mechanic wire up a hidden in-line ignition switch so it would take them literally hours to track it down, and no thief is doing that. Their advantage is the element of surprise and being able to get in and out in under 3 minutes.

If yore worried about yore truck being stolen at the storage facility, I'd be a little concerned about my boat disappearing as well. Might wanna look into that first?

That's a nice truck!
A 2005-2007 reg cab long bed 4x4 6.0 gas would be a good leave truck. I just searched la cl and nothing. Since covid they are hard to find and double the price.

If the BMW wasn't down I would be leaving my truck at the lake.... Never had an issue. I keep a set of fitted window shades up, and tire covers on when I do it...its only in direct sun for 4-6 hours a day then the garage blocks it. I know you are looking at enclosed but as long as its not sitting for 3+ months you ought to be fine.

What a beauty
Thanks. 2006, first year six speed allison, LBZ highest rated power with least amount of emissions. Do the new trucks make a ton more power? Absolutely, along with a 70-80k price tag for the same options. if I told you what I paid for it you wouldn’t believe me. I bought it in 2014 with 106k miles. So in nine years have managed to put 19k miles.

I’m sure you got it for a bargain compared to what they go for now.

One of my favorite body styles but I’m biased.

I wouldnt sweat it, but just know that as soon as you leave your truck there you will for some reason need your truck at home for some reason within a week.
