My wife's work has really bad parking. Cars always getting hit as well as no parking unless you arrive an hr early for your shift.

Only 8 miles away.

Thinking if it is worth getting something just for her to drive to work around town etc.

Just don't want our new truck getting ffffed parked there.

I do.

2007 Yaris Hatchback. It is too cheap to sell. I drive it when I don't have to take customers out or I'm driving around town to run errands. It has 140K on it, and has been bulletproof since new. The only thing bad thing on it is the paint is oxidizing. I'm going to get it repainted next year and drive it for another couple years.

I have a 2004 Pontiac grand prix, ( grand ma car ) that I call my work, beater or hoopty car. I run the piss out of it and don't care about it other than oil change, tires etc to keep it going , 150k

Back windows don't go down , rain washes it , 1 speaker works etc etc , hell
A lady ran into me, took the cash and kept driving

I have always had a work car. Never understood why u want an expensive car to go back and forth to work and let it jus sit there and get beat up.

I hear you on that. My wife likes bigger vehicles. I was looking for a Tahoe for another friend and now that is what she wants.

Found an 05 with a 4.8 that is nice. We have a kid on the way also. Thinking that would be more mom usable also.

Weighing if it is smart or not care and say that is what insurance is for???

If you find the right deal on a used one you are unlikely to lose your ass on it... Even an engine or a trans is relatively cheap to replace. Try it and if you don't like it, resell it and buy new. I'd feel pretty good about a 10-12 year old Tahoe, they are solid.

When my wife was pregnant with our first we bought an 8 year old 4 Runner with 69K miles for $13K. I sold it last Feb with 154K on it for $10K. Only thing it ever needed besides consumables was a $70 water pump.

We hit a piece or rebar on the freeway like 18 months ago and it punched a hole in the bumper the size of your thumb and broke a couple of the bumper mounts. I bought a new painted front bumper on Ebay, the bumper mounts, and all new headlights and foglights for under $500. Way cheaper than going through insurance, and I got a better end result. Took 2 hours to replace everything in the garage.

That said I highly recommend used 4th gen (03-09) 4runners. They are bulletproof and can go 250K miles with ease. A nice one with 100K on it has tons of life left in it.

I do.

I drive my shop truck all the time, 91 Toyota Reg Cab, 451k on it lol....

It's one of the million mile motor ones...still has the original cat etc on it, never had the motor apart except for a timing chain at 330k.

Looks like shit, you could not tell if someone beat it up in the parking lot...runs like a top and the air is still ice cold haha..:thumbsup

Gets better mileage now than when it was new...last trip to AZ it got 28 mpg at 85mph rofl...:eek

I drove this for a daily driver for a few years. Sold it a little while back & bought something a little nicer. It looked like it was ate by a coyote & then shit off a cliff, but I actually miss driving it. People had a tendency to get outta the way when they saw it coming, lol :p Used it exclusively when Christmas shopping, nobody fought me for parking spots. :D Fun little truck, 302 with a 4 spd. manual from the factory. Sesquicentennial edition, had every option available in 1986 I believe. :thumbsup

I DD a 1997 Saturn SC1. Gets 39-43mpg. Turned over 200,000 miles yesterday. I paid 800$ for it, and Ive driven it for 6+ years every day. I've never even changed the oil and Ive put ~60-70K on it. When it dies, I will park it on the side of the road and go buy another Saturn.

So,
I was putting lots of daily driving miles on my 2014 Tundra 4x4 and decided that I needed a beater for a daily driver.

I shopped for a few months and came up with this. 2007 350Z convertible with a manual trans and my wife went for it. I bought it with 38K miles on it and now it has 70K miles!!

Now I only put "river miles" on the Tunda:)

It's a really fun "beater" to drive!!:eek:champagne::champagne:

My beater is an 03 Mazda protege, 218k now, my wife got it when she wad 16 and it had 20k, we actually sold it a few years back to a friend's son who needed a first car, he proceeded to run it up the ass end of a tractor trailer, they were going to scrap it, i got it back for free, just by luck my pick a part had a silver protege, so i got the hood, bumper, core support for under $200 and been driving it since. Doesnt even leak oil. My kids are embarrassed to be seen in it, but i drive it everywhere. Lol

That is what I am thinking. I do all my own work. 4.8 or 5.3's are only 2k. Trans 1500. I tried to talk her into a 4runner. No luck. She is stuck on a Tahoe. The one I found is an original owner. Guy works for Chevy is pretty high up. The paint has a couple fade spots is all really.

Price is right at good book which I think is fair. So many crap ones out there. Has open 3.23's which I would like to change.

I got a beater, 95 Ford Ranger. Piece of shit is a magnet for shitty, uninsured drivers. Its been crashed twice. It's paid for itself a few times though. Insurance company has totaled it out and the fuel savings from an alternative weekend car.

My rig runner is an '02 Tahoe.
I sold the Cummins last year, picked up the Tahoe with about a fourth of the cash I got for the Dodge and have never looked back. It's a clean 4x4 with 140K on it...20K of which I put on it in the last 18 months.

Paint's done, dents on every panel. Cracked front clip when she rear ended somebody. She got a new car and I took it. Looks like hell, but I've just put oil in it and driven the shit out of it. Other than the airbag light being on, never an issue. 165k. When it dies I'll find another beater. My truck only goes to the river. Love it.

I did for years. 1997 saturn 2 door. Some called it the "fuck it bucket", if it got damaged or someone slammed their car door into it, fuck it, it's a bucket. Put about 215k on it. Had someone hit the front right fender putting a big crack in it, never fixed it because a new fender was worth more than the car. Also had a blown head gasket.

Is that in the ?05 Tahoe? I?m not 100% sure about the different Tahoe trim levels, but the ?05 Yukon only offered 3.73 or 4.10 ratios. That?s what my wife has with the 4.8. Thing has been dead nuts reliable minus the OG water pump failing at 145k miles ($60 with a new t?stat). I suggest finding one with a 3rd row. It has come really handy for us over the past couple years.

Yes 2005 LS with 4.8 and 3.23 open diff. Has the 3rd seat which is important. Had a new water pump at 116k along with new heads done at Chevy. Owner is pretty high up with corporate at Chevy.

Had the leaky cracked head issue.

That is what I am after reliable roomy driver. Was thinking Truetrac with 3.73's or 4.10's.

My '08 hemi Ram has begin to turn into a beater, but costs too much to drive the 160-170 miles I commute every day.
Had a TDI Jetta for a couple years that got great mileage. Was planning on keeping it, but let VW buy it back. Now I'm in a 328d for essentially what the Jetta was costing me.
I came to a point when I decided 20+ hours a week was too much time to be spent in a true shitbox DD.

Still got my 90 Ford Ranger beater with prolly 200k + on it now. Picked it up from Dmunkie here years back. I was fortunate enough to have to spend a small fortune on a driveshaft for it recently. My bucket be blingin' now. You guys with your luxury 2000+ cars that you call beaters. Ballers. :D

Typically, the 2WD chevies of that era were 3.23 or 3.73, and the 4WDs are 3.42, 3.73, or 4.10.

For a "beater" I wouldn't waste my time or money regearing.

The body on mine is in great shape. Someone bumped the back in a parking lot so the rear bumper cover has a couple scratches on it. A new one is like $240, I'll get one when I paint it.

It does not leak or burn a drop of any fluid. It gets 30 MPG in town flooring it all the time.

We will not be forced to climb under out beaters and remove the gold plated driveshaft when the rest of the car is rendered useless however.

I’ve paid my beater dues. I used to drive this 15 years ago..
84 CRX rally car I paid $400 for.

With fewer body panels.. jumping and rallying it in what would become Eastvale.

'97 S10 4.3L 5-spd manual ext. cab w/243k miles. Brother bought it new; I bought from him in 2003 and started DD duty in 2008. I drive it on 30 or so 400-500 mile round trip assignments a year, scoring the IRS mileage through employer, so it's a money maker. Since 2009, I've put a total of $1000 in actual repairs, including front brakes and new Cat. Easy to repair and work on. Interior is still like new; exterior is good, but hood has oxidation. It's worth almost nothing, so will drive and rebuild as necessary.

Lol....got.me a 91 CRX Si sitting in the driveway too. It's my son's first car. Got in accident. Needs front bumper, fenders, and 1 headlight. Pretty clean otherwise. Only has like 160k on it I think. Been waiting for him to get it going and make it his daily. He's dragging his ass. Daddy's about to swoop it up from him. :D

I live in south florida which is like Vietnam on the freeways! I have an 03 Nissan Frontier with 250k miles, owned since new, drives like new. Badass, bulletproof trucks and everything is super easy to work on.

A friend down here just bought a $50k+ Grand Cherokee that he stored in my shop during the hurricane instead of his boat, then got rear ended the next week lmao.

I?ve got a 02 TDI Jetta wagon 5 speed with 307k on the clock. I beat that thing in to the ground and it just goes. I got it cheap because your not gonna get trim in a wagon. But I do take care of it. I just ordered the second timing belt kit for it since I?ve owned it. That car has been the cheapest little shit box to own.

...I?ve had a number of Beaters and still have a few...I’ve posted this before but my favorite is a 1980 Mercedes 300SD...The 5 cylinder diesel... I bought it for $500 as a parts car for a decent 300SD that I also own...The car turned out to be so much fun that as of yet I haven?t scavenged one part from it...28 mpg...while the decent one gets 38...the odometer reads well over 700K...no idea what the real mileage is but it’s a good conversation piece anyway...
...The brown car...

I have a '99 Camry. Bought it in 2004 from a lil' ol' lady's estate after she died. It's a friggin' rock star. The 2.2L four banger is bulletproof, doesn't leak a drop of oil. The A/C is cold, reeel cold.

It had 55K miles on the clock when I bought it, now has 167K. I've changed the struts, the brakes, alternator, and just recently the inner tie rods. In 2014 I had to fix an oil pump leak, which is common on the 2.2. At the same time I changed the timing belt, water pump, accessory belts, and radiator hoses.

Those repairs cost less than $2K, and I paid 7K for the car. That means the car has cost about $700 a year, not including tires. I might buy a different car next year, but maybe not. It's been a great car.

I?m looking to get out of driving our Escalade everyday to work. My office is about 25 miles away and takes me about 30-35 minutes. Thinking of an 09 Cadillac XLR-V. A DD car for me still has to be something I would enjoy driving more than what it could save me.

Smart logic says leave it alone and drive it. The anal perfectionist in me wants more out of it. I guess I could just pull the carrier and add the Truetrac.

I like where this is going.

Mainly I would like to be able to tow the boat to and from the ramp easy. With the open diff I don't want to be stuck on the ramp haha.

I just sold my 03 BMW 530i with 185k+ on the odometer. That car was dead reliable, a lot of the gadgets had stopped working but it drove fine. I didn't want to sell it but with my wife getting a new car we had one two many and not everything fit in the garage.

Over the course of ownership it cost me $3-4K (I owned it for 10 years) in parts and pieces, but I do all my own wrench turning. Easy cars to work on if you've got a little time to figure out how they went together.

The problem around here is most anything older than 5 or 6 years is a rust bucket. You want to talk about beaters... lots of cars with cancer on the roads.

Dammit... this thread has me looking for something to DD and park my Ram... Lol... My Dad has a cherry '00 Grand Marquis he picked up years ago from an old man in Scottsdale with 100k on it, I keep waiting for him to pick up something newer so I can buy it from him but I don't think it will be anytime soon. Absolutely love driving that thing, parts are cheap/ easy to find, and easy to fix.

Before I actually sold my Cummins I parked it for 2 years and bought a 2000 extended Tacoma TRD SR5 pickup with 180K on it.
Beat that little truck for 2-3 years and sold it for $6500 first person that looked at it with 220K on it.
