Looks like Dubai Police just picked one up to use in service. That ones more of a flying motorcycle. There's others that at two seaters and ready to hit the market. Video shows the ones that are closest to hitting the market.

I've never really had a huge desire to get my airplane pilots license, always toyed with helicopter license but a drone? I'd be totally in!!

Can't wait to see the first foot pursuit and watch them literally cut down the suspect with the front rotors.

Yea, those blades on the bike / copter needs to have a cage. Kinda sketchy.

I'm confused by the thread title. A drone is specifically defined as "unmanned"......Everything shown in the thread has passengers aboard and is being controlled by a pilot???????

Looking at the motorcycle looking on, I see far too many potential issues if something goes wrong including what happens if power is lost. And I still feel battery powered aircraft have a lot of deals that need to be worked out concerning reliability. I do not want any part of being close to the beginning end of the learning curve.;)

Sorry, I didn't know what else to label them....Personal flying machines?

I agree though, that "safety gear" the pilot is riding on the M/C thing isn't gonna do much if the power fails from 60-100 feet up!:eek:

Yup, as glide factors go, hard to see how that works.

Those rotors on the bike are scary. Turn around in the seat to check your six and there goes your kneecap.

there's a guy here in town that flies his gyro-copter, he built, over the lake during summer. You can build one quite cheaply, compared to any other flying craft. At least you could glide it in case of engine malfunction and goping for best scenario, if there's a flat land close. Wonder if that Dubai contraption has a belt system linking all the rotors in case one motor fails. If not that pilot is doomed.

It’s coming. This was out at Boulder City airport yesterday. The guys are here in vegas for CES. They just got it approved for experimental category and are beginning flight testing. Eventually it will be a certified quad copter. Obviously must have a pilot certificate . They also have to come up with new regs. For the FAR’s (Federal Aviation Regulations) for training and operations etc... The guy said they are close. Pretty neat.

I'm surprised the licensing wouldn't be less strict along the lines of an ultra light, etc.

I guess for some situations I agree like depending on where it’s operated. But being a pilot, I’d be pretty nervous having a bunch of these things operating in the same airspace as me without the training. For the mission these quad copter manufacturers are after I would bet that most of them would be in big cities where you have some of the worlds busiest airspace. It is possible that it could wind up in the sport category which is more training then ultra light but not quite as much as a pilot certificate. Basically giving them the knowledge of how to navigate all the different airspace’s

Motherfuckers can't hardly drive a car that is stuck on the ground. How do you think the public will be able to handle 3 dimensions if they can't deal with 2....

They'll be autonomous when they come out for public use, methinks. At the very least, computer-guided.

You can't have a bunch of them crusing around at the pilot's whim.

Why do they have chained down? So it doesn’t get away?
Or is that as high as they want it to go?

Can you imagine doing what you do, with 100,000 other aircraft all vying for the same airspace?

I'd pull up a chair and watch [emoji4]

It would suck. That’s why I stay out of airspace that requires you to talk on the radio

Everything is chained down on the transient parking ramp. They parked it there over night is why I think they over chained it. Also they were just doing strong run ups on it so I’m guessing just for safety.

So is their MTI police boat and all their exotic police cars lol

I saw some video a couple weeks ago of those motorcycle thingys. They aren't going to catch shit on those things. It looked like a balancing act on a high wire while the guy tried to maneuver it around (he was just trying to not fall off of it).

is it a parachute on his back or a fuel cell? It won't help much in that altitude he's demoing. Are they planning to fly this thing at higher altitude at all? I think the jetpack military version from the past is better, having the legs act as a ballast to keep staying straight up. How would anyone recover from a sudden angle change? It's not the same as the water version where one is close to the water and diving is possible.

I really don't see why they didn't just put a cage around them.

Seems the Dubai cop hovercraft do have a cage, a couple of the vids show them installing it. Guess for the publicity shots they left them off.

You could have named the thread "roads, where we're going we don't need roads"

They're all just a big nuisance. Noisy as fuck and obnoxiously irritating, no matter what size they are.

We don't get much around where I live. Neighbor has one and he runs it every once in a while but doesn't bother anyone much.

The thing that really pisses me off though is we've had a local offshore helicopter Co. fly a huge lit santa / sleigh / reindeer every Christmas boat parade night and every crhistmas eve for easily 40 years (been doing it since I was a little kid). They stopped this year because there are too many drones in the area making flight unsafe. I guess they nearly collided with one last year so they permanently ended the program. End of an era. :( You'd hear the helicopter coming at night and everyone would run out to wave at "santa". The helicopter blacked out so you couldn't see it. The kids LOVED seeing santa fly over. Sad deal.

Zach, do you think we'll start seeing guys hunting hogs out of these things?

Multiple seaters with AR mounts sounds like fun with a danger factor for fools that venture beyond their talent level.:eek:

Drone operators cried about the regulations imposed on them but its stuff like this that make it a necessity. Really a bummer to loose such a cool event because of the many drones.
I don't really get many around the home like when they first came to market...... and back a few years ago I thought they were way cool. They didn't all have 20x zoom cameras then either. But what really set my negativity off was having a neighbor flying one around over my house in Havasu regularly, hovering in large circles. Eventually, It bugged me so much so that I pretended to point a weapon with my hands at it and it suddenly darted off. That really pissed me off knowing this fucker is staring down at me and the wife lounging in our backyard pool. Now I have zero trust in any unknown drone flying near me.
The drones can and do serve some good purposes for people and professionals but in my opinion they should not be allowed to randomly fly around private properties.
Been little over a year since my neighbor flew his over my house with only one non-invasive flyby I noticed late this Fall. I've noticed now he tends to fly it more along streets vs over everyones homes, something I appreciate he has the respect to do.
Maybe I wasn't the only irritated neighbor, lol:D:cool:

Having one hover over me in my yard would infuriate me as well. The anti drone devices are coming out, soon they will be very affordable. I see the fad dying down and more regulations being imposed in the future.

Same thing happened to my wife and kids in the pool someone flew a drone into the backyard and was hovering 10 feet off the ground. They were lucky I wasn't home. Not sure what I would have done but it wouldn't have ended well for me I'm sure. I wonder if a hose with a good nozzle would knock one out of the air.

If you want to be wonky about about it, "personal drones" will never be available, since a drone is an unmanned vehicle

"A drone, in a technological context, is an unmanned aircraft. Drones are more formally known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or unmanned aircraft systems (UASes). Essentially, a drone is a flying robot. The aircrafts may be remotely controlled or can fly autonomously through software-controlled flight plans in their embedded systems working in conjunction with onboard sensors and GPS."
