I picked up a Mastercraft Smoker at a garage sale (10 bucks)and I'm going to give this smoking thing a try. As I was using it last night I was constantly walking out to it to monitor the temps. So now I am thinking I need a remote sensor. One that I can put in the meat and just read remotely. Is there any that just reads to your phone and what should I look for in one of these?

I have used a weber igrill in the past but not very accurate, the probes seem to read very different. I have a Tru-Tel thermometer on my smoker and use a thermapen on the meat. If I was going to get another remote deal I would look into Thermaworks.

this is the one you want if you're serious. Multi probes (ie. pit temp, meat 1, meat 2, meat3), the higher end can even drive a fan if you want to play that game.

My pit-boss has two temp probes, one on the inside on the side which is the number shown on the digital display, and the mechanical thermometer on the lid. They read completely different numbers.

Then I have a two prob temp unit with a bluetooth readout in the house. One of those probes I put in the meat, the other one I position to float next to the meat. That probe that's hanging in the air also reads a much different smoker temp than the other two that comes with the pitboss.. There's up to a 50F difference across all these 3 probes.

I need help in this department too, which one do I trust? How hot is my smoker ACTUALLY?

BTW this is the remote probe unit I use, but it sucks. The reason it sucks is it has an alarm for over-temp, but doesn't have an alarm for under-temp. One time I was doing a brisket and the fire went out at 3am and it didn't alert me and wake me up, so I got up at 7 to a cold pit...

MEATER is nice, but the range is not that far. guessing 20-25 feet before it loses connection to your phone. I've had them all, and they all work to some degree. Personally, I just spot check with an Insta Read thermo. Most longer cooks don't need constant checking, especially on the front side of the cook. Get your chamber dialed, and let it ride. If that smoker doesn't have a chamber gauge, that's what I would be looking to install. Inexpensive and probably pretty easy. Possibly even google search adding a gauge to that model smoker and I'm sure you'll find someone who has done it. You can find suggested cook times and temps for just about any cook on google. Start checking your meat temp on the back side of the cook. Stop a little short and let rest. Most meats will climb another 5-10 degrees with rest. Have fun.

I have some no name blue tooth jobby i got at home depot for under $40 it has the thing that stays by the smoker with the wire for the probe and and a remote unit, furthest i have tried it is about 60' and it works. set it for beef / poultry or what ever and it has lights on top that go across until they are lit and you are done, along with the screen that gives temp. on my traguer i got so pissed at the readout being wrong i also bought a replacement temp gage for a bbq and drilled a hole in the body of it and installed it.

Meater 2 is 165ft with walls in a typical home and 1000ft open air .

My Traeger gauge in the lid has one temp, the digital readout, another, and my carry around bluetooth a different one yet. The Bluetooth probe for the temp of the unit, I can make it change significantly depending on which way I point the probe and where I place it

X2. Even leave a tablet near the door that stays connected a loads the data to the cloud. You can watch on your phone all day while working that way. Worked perfect last year when I was on call and out and about all day thanksgiving.

That is the exact one that I have and have used since it came out.
