Are you doing a group buy with friends or to sell as a business?

Can you transport them on their “ass” straight up and down?

Figure $2.00 a mile min to flatbed semi truck for cost. Shipping via truck is super inexpensive right now and will eventually go back up as I don’t know how people make money doing that rate. I don’t do it.

No because you would be over 13’6” on the highway. Rail not sure
Trying to do the math now. If you laid them at a 45 angle (no idea how complicated that is) and removed the tongues could you stack 6+?

Can not remove the tongue. But if a train car can hold two 53' semi trailers then we should be able to put 4 trailers on one or 6 on two im thinking

One way suburban rentals. I have brought 2 back from GA, one is junk, the other is worse. They are cheap for a reason!
Thanks but this doesn't help trying to move trailers in bulk not one at a time

Try the RV transport companies. They haul the majority of enclosed and RV tag trailers around the country. Most are done with 1 tons (hotshot) and purpose built trailer. Don't know the dimensions but they are probably 53'.

It looks like you only want 20' trailers but I think it would be smart to do some shorter trailers also. They sell and you can basically ship them free. I'm thinking you could do 2 20' and 1 12' on one trailer. 2200 miles from Atlanta to LA @ $2 mi. $4400. $1466 per trailer, well below the $3k budget you have.

Apparently they can build them way cheaper on the east coast
Some yes some no.
I did a deep dive when I bought my little 14x6. I saw trailers much cheaper back east. I flew out to Texas to look at one that I thought was a smoking deal. Nope it was a lot full of POS. Most use the thinnest aluminum siding and when it gets hot out it warps something terrible.

I found a dealer that had good pricing on Pace trailers but by the time and cost to get them here I would have to price them the same.

Be sure to make a trip to investigate.

It’s amazing what people are running for. Idk how they even put fuel in there trucks 🤣
I won’t even start my Dually for $2 a mile let alone my semi 🤣

Funny you say that, at the airport just leaving a supply chain conference. Saw them post this up and it made me feel good for turning work down. I usually quote per lane + FSC. When I give a per mile rate, and they come back with “our target rate is $2.00-$2.20 per mile, these other guys quoted this…” I say go with them! Not in it to break even.

Good news, it’s been a shipper market for almost 2-3 years, the Shippers are expecting a turn at Q4 this year. I sure hope so.

I totally get what you are saying and I to don't understand how they can do it for 3.00 a mile after expenses. But for this venture I'm on the other side of the table and trying to get it as cheap as possible without having to make runs to GA myself

Are you talking about 20' semi trailers or 20' box trailers?

More people need to learn to say no and we wouldn’t have this problem. I’m lucky to be in a niche industry for the most part so I don’t really deal with the bottom feeders at all. For the industry as a whole though I hope it turns around.

Here are a couple things to think about before doing this. I've done it close to you here in San Diego. I did flat bed trailers. Bought 30 of them from a builder in the midwest. They came to me with the tires and rear ramp removed for easier shipping. They were sold to me with just a MSO. Came in 2 colors white or black. Many came with paint flaws. Very poor paint jobs. The wiring for the lights was pretty bad. The couplers were an odd style. Quite a few other small issues. They started selling fairly quickly. Wasn't making very much on them at the start. Was testing the market. Not long after the sale some of them started coming back with problems. Uneven tire wear. Welds breaking, lots of rust, lights not working and so on. The MFG was a little helpful at the beginning but shortly after said that I would need to take care of the problems myself because he didn't make much money selling them to me. Selling something that has a VIN # and is going to be plated, you will need a dealers license. Just signing over the MSO to them doesn't work. The DMV will come back to you. Are you paying sales tax on them? Are you collecting sales tax when you sell them? Do you have a resale # with the State Board of Equalization? Believe me when I say that it is an absolute pain in the ASS for a few thousand dollars.

That's nuts. I was paying $1/mile for 53' air rides in the 90s. Diesel fuel was around $1.35, and a new Class 8 sleeper was $65K.

I 100% would be doing the same in your shoes.

I guess my comment was more so directed towards the shipper / carrier contracted industry. Sorry to highjack the thread.

Nothing is cheap. Rt Vegas to corona is $2600, I do it for just $170 in diesel fuel. Business is business.
