Has anyone ever made like a modified holeshot? For such a simple and effective tool they sure are expensive new lol. Been looking around and haven't found nay used ones recently. Just thought I'd see if anyone had any tricks up their sleeves

Carefully pull the rope in the boat, don't step on it or kick it. As long as it's good rope that hasn't been twisted up by being pulled without a skier it works fine.

Another old trick is to tape the rope on the side of the boat, back and forth. The hole shots are cool if you have them, but not absolutely necessary. A good team should be able to get 220 feet of rope played out in under 30 seconds without having a tangle.

This being my first year of racing I've just been laying the rope (well my observer has cause I always seem to have it knot lol) in the boat and just let it feed out. Was just trying to make it so I was a little more prepared.

Could you try using a bag or something to "stuff" the rope in? Like climbers do? Or will that just tangle up?

Never seen a bag,, and the skier never gets to touch the rope. Observer needs to learn to do it, part of the job.

If you hook the rope on the ski tow, and hand over hand drop it on the floor(or even the seat if there is a rear bench) until you get to the handles, it should play out fine. Once the skier drops into the water with the handles, the observer may need to hold the rope up to keep it from hanging up on the engine or whatever, depending on the boat. If we are talking about the Catalina race, there is plenty of time to get the rope out.

Actually, if you are uncertain about it,, you can get the observer to practice out of the water,, someone can grab the handles and run away from the boat and see how it plays out. It's a simple thing, but if you get the rope tangled, it can ruin your race.

Before holeshots we used large, round, plastic laundry baskets. One's big enough to take large coils of line. They obviously have their limitations (especially when they fly out of the boat) but if you 'train' the line well they are at least much quicker to load.

We have a English company who makes a version of hole shots. They are made pretty much to order and I have seen them in different colours and with team names printed on.

They are cheaper but you'd have to allow for carriage. I was told the money is in the amount of time required to stitch all the little fabric tubes within the case.

Well for 300 bucks for a new one I can think of a lot of other things I can put money towards for racing lol.

Here is an update. I went ahead and got some outdoor canvas and busted out a sewing machine. Tested it and it works I just need to attach some velcro so when it is rolled up it wil stay together. Total cost was about 70 bucks :D I estimated that this will hold apprx 200 ft of rope. When I tested it I only had 175 in the boat

Sorry these are the only picks I have ill take better ones next time I am in havasu.
