So the shoulder thread got me thinking on this hip of mine. it’s getting bad now. Been bone on bone for a while now.
Got X-rays back in Feb after pain got worse and worse over a few years.
Used to be intermittent but is all the time now and much more sever.
Surgeon said to wait until I couldn’t take it any more before getting replacement.
I think that time has come.
So...he says that it’s a great thing, and life will be all better afterwards.
Any advice? Experiences?

Had mine x-rayed last Thursday with primary go to ortho dr. this Thursday to see where we go. Pain is constant and to the point that I can't lift my left leg off the ground because of the pain it causes in my right hip.

Damn. Hope all goes well. You don’t even have to be a radiologist to see bone on bone.

Im due to get one soon also. Saw the Dr. at the beginning of the year and said that I needed it done, but wanted me to lose some weight first to make recovery easier. I am down 56lbs so far. The pain has been getting bad though. He has gave me a couple cortisone injections to help the pain until I do the surgery. Cortisone would normally break down the soft tissue in the joint, but he said you can't hurt what isn't there.

How much do the injections help with the pain?

Good friend got his done a little over a year ago. He was up and driving within 4-5 days. Said it was the best thing he has done. Bone on bone for years at the ripe old age of 45.
Like other have said …. Do your homework on Dr’s in your area and pick the best.

Where is said doctor located?
I’m in Havasu but can travel somewhat for better options.

The first one was great. Helped me out a bunch until about 2 weeks before he would give me a second one. The 2nd one don't seem to help as much or last as long. A different Dr did the second one, she had to pull the needle out and stick a longer one in 3 times. She didn't seem very confident. I have a picture of the xray somewhere.

Mine is bone on bone. Got an injection a month ago and it’s worked fairly well. Long walks are still difficult almost to the point of not being to make it back home. UCI orthopedic in Orange is where I’ll get it done.

being overweight is a big problem even after hip replacement. i had mine done about 8 years ago, but still hurt quite a bit due to being overweight. once I lost weight, i was great. don't wait. get it done. theres no reason to wait...... I was in for 2 nights, 3 days.

knee surgery (full knee replacement hurts ALOT more than a hip replacement.

My right hip joint was replaced three years ago. I was able to get around OK after a month, but it took almost a year to heal to the point where I don't think about it anymore.

Most THAs (total hip arthroplastys) are now done by anterior access, meaning they go through the front to perform the surgery. It has better results.

You'll be happy with the results. Just plan on some discomfort and not being able to ride in a car for several hours during the first year. It's manageable, not a big deal.

A very good friend of mine spends a lot of time researching everything in his life, almost too much if you ask me, lol. A really smart guy, successful etc.. Anyway, he's been having hip issues, he has a hip that is (i believe) bone on bone. So after talking to several Doctors about his situation he decides on Stem Cell Therapy. He recently flew down to Medellin Columbia to a cutting edge Stem Cell Therapy place down there. They injected him with stem cells in his hip, back and neck followed up by a few injections of super strong vitamins. So far he says his back and neck feel much better from the treatment. But there hasn't been a big improvement to his hip. So I think a hip surgery is in his future. I was a little surprised by his decision but I guess he was trying to avoid surgery.

If the so called stem cell therapy worked, people wouldn't have to go to Mexico or Columbia to be treated. It would be available right here in the good ol' USA.

Got both of mine done at the same time at 50. A couple of weeks of recovery that wasn't too bad. You seriously lay down on the table in unbearable pain, and are scooting around the hospital with a walker four or five hours later with no pain. They said I'd have to get updates in my 70's, but I went in for the 10 year check up and they said they put a new style (back then) joint in that was showing no wear and I would be good to go forever. If the doctors say your ready, get it done.

I think it's not avail yet in the states because of the process is controversial. Not because it doesn't work. It's an Arizona based company that has a lot of pro athletes and repeat patients who have had great results.

I kept trying to get AJ to race me after a week.....lol

After putting up with pain daily for 15 years the knee replacement was a total relief from the get go. No pain meds or anything other than ice, elevation and advils to fight the swelling

How is the swelling of your knee. Guy in my office had a knee replacement a couple months before you did and he still says he has to wear shorts due to the swelling. I keep telling him he's milking it. :p

I’m going to use AJ’s doctor and looking forward to the recovery on the ranch. Plus I hear there’s a pretty attentive nurse.

I had mine done a few years back and it was a MO-FO for the first few days. They had me up and moving right away and for as much as I could handle and they kept pushing me to keep moving. Supposedly it is better to get going right away and keep pushing, or maybe that is an insurance thing to get you out of the bed ASAP.

Anyways, this is a recent X-ray and as you can see, everything is back to normal.

My wifes first hip replacement surgery was at 8am and she walked out on her own 4 hours later. Three weeks later we were hiking in Yosemite. The most recent surgery was late in the afternoon so they kept her over night. She went back to work today but could have gone back 2-3 weeks earlier.

Had my right hip replaced about 5 or 6 years ago, Got some good advice from a doctors ade, told me always turn foot to outside when lifting dont pull it up over level with stomach, all say dont cross legs. when I had the surgery the doctor told my wife i could go home if I wanted about an hour after the surgery, they get you up and walking very soon after surgery, recovery was not to bad for me first week probably worst about a month bookin around pretty good. I have tried to be carefull with range of motion I dont think lateral strengh is as strong. I have been able tp do about 98% of what I could before surgery, not gonna twist around in a eng comp en such but no pain to speak of, a little foot note about it for me was, went to the airport about two years before pandemic went through the metal detector twice, then said Oh shit I forgot to tell them about my hip replacement that was how little I think about or notice it. Now Iam sure others have different stories a friends wife had one years ago and she encouraged me to get it done said you be glad you did, and Iam. good luck WTG make sure you get the best doc you can.

I have had my left hip replaced and my right knee. The hip was a piece of cake, but the knee was a real bitch by comparison, same Dr.
My Dr. is Dan Oakes, he is the chief of joint replacement at USC Keck Medical center. He is the best in the city. His number is 323-442-6950 or 800-872-2273

Had consult with ortho Dr this am right hip socket is bone on bone and a replacement is going to happen this year. I have a fishing trip in Alaska in Sept. so we are going to try the steroid injection first to see if that can get me through the trip then have it replaced after.

Re-thinking the injection route, if it only lasts a couple weeks I'll be screwed going to Alaska anyway so I might see if they can just do it asap and wait on the trip. Dr is saying that replacement can't happen for three months after injection and he doesn't want to do it and I still go fishing for fear of infection, so have to decide.

Is your joint bone on bone?

Yup, doctor advised me to hold off as long as possible as replacements only last so long. Replacing a replacement is tougher than the first go around.

Dr. said that it should last 25/30 years I'm 59 so I would like to be able to function like my age instead of like I'm already 75.

The surgeon I consulted with in Havasu said the same thing. He said when I think it’s time go a little longer.

Yeah we’re the exact same age.
It was intermittent until last fall, now it’s all the time pain. I hobble around like I’m 90.
