I've done all my sxs riding in either havasu or glamis. I brought my sxs back to ca and want to do a local trip to the high desert this sat, somewhere off the 15. What's a good area to ride for some good terrain, high speeds, ect. Not much of a rock crawler or slow trails type of rider. Just want to narrow down some areas to try.

Thx

outlet center...its BEAT UP desert...

Johnson Valley/Lucerne Valley - camp rock road / Means lake rd isn't too bad.

I would stay away from the Silverwood area... overcrowded for my liking.

Head up 395 and you get to Red Mountain. lots of trails there.

I would heard further north and check out Dove Springs and Jawbone area, there is some good stuff out there. If it rains this week like they are predicting it will be perfect out there with no dust.

Mirage dry lake bed is pretty cool. It has some hills to climb, trails, the dry lake bed for high speed runs and if I remember right I think we found some dunes at one time.

El Mirage is full. No really, it's a lake right now. So half of the draw for El Mirage is gone.
So right off the 15 Johnson valley, / x outlet center.

Sounds like you would like Cal City. But a bit more of a drive for a day for you.

If you're looking for close and easy, get off at Outlet Center and park anywhere you please. You can run the race course either direction, or explore some Trails up the hills. Make your way over to slash X for lunch, and then take a different route back to camp.

If you end up wanting to do that, let me know and I'll mark up an aerial with some routes for you.

Might even get some snow this weekend in Dove/Red Rock/Jawbone. Always a good ride up to the Piutes to get into the white stuff!!

Definitely worth driving a little further north!

A bunch of years ago we went up into the piute mountains to clareville and I got stuck in the snow for like 4 hours ! At one point I thought my ride was staying ! Always fun in the snow .

I had the same situation years ago on my dirt bike. The boys left at 9 a.m. for a longer ride starting in Dove. We ventured over to the Piutes and were not well prepared other than Camelbacks full of water in the bladders and beers in the pockets. We got into the Piute and it started to snow- some of the best single track riding and there was only 4 of us and we all rode a good pace- didn’t have to wait for stragglers. While we were all pumped on riding snowy single track we realized we were low on gas and lost. We couldn’t back track because it started snowing so heavy that it was covering up our tracks.

We got to a plane crash sight back there and it really started messing with our minds since it was cold, snowy and we were lost. After several turns and turn arounds we got our bearings straight and headed back to camp. It was almost dark by the time we returned and we all literally coasted in on fumes. My now wife (girlfriend back then) was completely panicked since she had never been to Dove before and wasn’t sure what to do- call the cops, search and rescue or chill out. I got an earful when I got back, but looking back it was one of those epic days!

The Piutes are the other way- you leave Dove and head towards Jawbone- ride through Jawbone and you cross one of the paved roads back there and there is a trail system that will take you up into the pine trees and snow.

There is a way to ride and also drive buggies/SxS's from the Piutes and end up in Lake Isabella but I have yet to see what trail numbers they are. Would be an awesome full day ride. I saw someone post about it- I need to figure that out, would be awesome to do.

Here is the plane crash site that someone posted online: https://joeidoni.smugmug.com/Aircraft-Crash-Sites/Piute-Mountains-F-105D/

We go out 103 I think . Up past the microwave tower down to the pavement then up the dirt road to the top . At clareville we drop back down jawbone canyon road through jaw;one canyon . It's awsome but not green sticker legal . Re people who live in the canyon on the way down are not happy to see you at all . It's up there probably 6 k plus in altitude .

I prefer taking the Stoddard Wells road exit off the 15. Take all way to thr end. Keep going till you get to Smokey and the Bear wildfire sign. Now you can camp past that.

Just went last weekend. Riding was phenomenal. We cruise all the way to Johnson Valley from here. Made it to the Dunes. Then Slash X. I can send you coordinates. I hate Hodge road and Outlet Center. All beat up.

Cell service is good out there. You camping out at stoddard wells road? Pretty much just take it east/north until the powerlines. Turn right and youll hit Slash X.

Like they say, “all roads lead to slash x!” Just mark your camp on your phone and have fun. Would be hard to get lost.

Now the Stoddard to Johnson to Slash x is a full day ride and more complicated to avoid paved roads etc.

Okay here you go.

If you're camping on Stoddard Wells, watch out for idiots on quads and bikes not wearing helmets and pit racing. Always expect somebody to come around the corner going the opposite direction, there have been a lot of head-ons out there, especially after a long visit to slash X.

Hodge Road has an area where people camp, usually much less crowded and less idiots than Stoddard Wells.

Outlet Center Drive is the Barstow main pit, where most of us test the race cars. Watch out for people hauling ass in either direction. If your Camp there, you can take the side-by-sides up to the gas station at the south end of Outlet Center Drive to get ice beer snacks and fuel.

The routes highlighted in green are the most common, but there's all sorts of trails out there you can take.

The mine off of Stoddard Wells might be all closed up now, it's been 10 or 15 years since I was out there.

Have fun! If you end up wanting to do it again I'll take the toy hauler and the toys out there and make a weekend of it. I live in Apple Valley so it's only 15 or 20 minutes for me.

I love camping at Calico, are you saying in the campground or in one of the Canyons? I haven't explored the whole area yet but I can mark up another map to give you a general idea of where to go.

Is there gas at slash x, roughly how many miles to from Stoddard and how many from hodge. We’re just making a day trip, my brother in law got a x3, I normally leave my razor in Havasu, but this looks pretty cool to explore. Thx again all

No gas at Slash X, approx 13-15 miles either way. My X3 can do that run 10 times in a day with one tank. So you will have no prob! You can always loop around to Outlet center from Slash X and get gas if needed. But not necessary!

I have a group of buddies that will be out there Saturday through Tuesday, and I should be joining them either Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning. If I go out there Saturday then I'll post up our spot location, and you guys are welcome to join. Pretty mellow group...

I wouldn't camp in the main area, and I would try and get as far off of Stoddard Wells Road as possible. It's going to be crowded with pit Racers (adults and kids), so definitely expect somebody around every corner when you're on the road or a trail.

Slash X is pretty much the only destination ride I can think of from there, unless you want to go to the gas station or a restaurant on Outlet Center Drive. There's a cool mine that we used to go to, but I'm not sure if it's still open or if they blasted it shut.

Sounds like we need to head out an extra hour or two early or so to find a spot!
