And “the big guy” hasn’t done shit for UAW workers. Writers and actors are still sitting at home drinking Bud Light.

But you can bet your pensions it’ll be nothing but Unicorn farts and blow jobs next time they need to get elected.

Test vehicles….what could possibly go wrong?😎
The concept scares the hell out of me. That said, my sister in law's stepbrother (or something to that effect) has been a "safety observer" in a semi for 2-3 years now. Was in Tucson I think...job was to literally stay awake and be prepared to hit the brakes.

Sounds like he was a crash prevention dummy.

Speaking of unions, I was going down Westbound I-10 and up the 57 freeway earlier towards the 210.
As I made that 10/57 merge there are a shit ton of bikers, Harley guys.
All had club looking jackets, Teamsters, Electrical Union, a shot ton of Union riders. Must have been 2-300 riders.

I don't think so . We as Americans want all the money and are the cheapest fuckers on earth . I.e. company wants the profit and consumer wants it cheap .

LOL Easy bill to veto, there will never be driverless cars or trucks of any consequence.
This guy gets it.
I am not one to never say, never, but in my opinion, we are a long, long ways from the technology that will create driverless trucks.

Seems all of these test pilot programs only happen in areas of decent weather. The crash mitigation equipment in the trucks that are supposed to help drivers doesn’t even work in heavy rain and not at all and snow.

When they make a truck with no steering wheel, I’ll believe there will be widespread use of driverless trucks.

10 years ago they said 80% of cars will be autonomous by now 😂.

Now they are saying in another 10 years 80% of cars will be electric.

There are two companies running driverless 18 wheelers between Dallas and Houston. The state just grinned and said OK. I'm not down with 80,000 lbs running on the interstate without a human on board. The route ends at a terminal where a driver takes over for delivery and putting it on a dock.

They refute any objections with calculated statistics which show the driverless trucks are safer than one piloted by a warm body. I'm not buying it.

They are already building them in Tucson. TuSimple is the company. They have been running routes on the I-10 for several years now. Just like Monkewrench's relative said. There is someone in them to hit the brakes, but that is about it. They don't advertise them much cause they don't want people scewing the tests, but I don't think there have been many issues at all.

Too many variables to be unmanned imo. Electronics are amazing when they work properly but on my side of things (heavy equipment) the electronic components are failing prematurely on the newer stuff. The quality of electronics has gone downhill fast and I’m not sure why as there’s many wormholes to jump down. The innovation is there but the longevity of the crucial components are not in my opinion, especially in a 80,000lb application.

Also it’s inevitable that this will be the future unfortunately.

Kinda unrelated to the post but why are there no generator powered semis or other equipment for that matter. Smaller Diesel engine that hums along and provides power for the wheel motors/trans however it works out. Seems a little more feasible than a battery powered semi. Basiclly a semi with an electric version of a hydrostat system.

I think Autonomous Trucks will have a major impact in the transportation industry. Major Media continues to propagate the lie that there is a driver shortage. At a time that capacity (available trucks) is at a all time high. Pushing the narrative of the need for autonomous trucks is the only reason that I can see why. Even if it only becomes terminal to terminal it will wipe out thousands of jobs. This will push those drivers over to other areas, creating even more saturation and decreasing wages.

Here is an article from earlier this year. Tusimple fleet reached 10 million miles with only one chargeable accident. I don't think any human fleet has ever been able to achieve this.

Everything that can be Invented has been Invented?
They were already invented. They just don’t work in our society and in our roadway environment and I don’t see that environment changing.

I keep hoping they make the Indio grade a driverless trucks run and the electronics is smart enough to just go nose to tail in the single right lane and let the rest of traffic pass in the left lane unmolested by truckers who think it’s funny to pull out and race each other at 1 mph passing rate.

Might be the only perk of driverless trucks. Even still how do the trucks get fueled and such?

You're right, death to all automated trucks. What was I thinking

Until you can sue the truck mfg when it runs you off the road, it’s simply not gonna happen without a human… “too much liability” as RDP likes to say.

I’m in 3 unions and they all ask for money to support their PAC. I could never donate to that garbage. How they try to sway a vote is disgusting
My wife is an accountant with the state and was forced to me a union member. When they changed the laws a few years back she immediately quit. Your own money going to political interest that you are opposed to is screwed up.

Forget about being hacked, has anyone here ever had a piece of electronic equipment that has an at one time or another had an undesirable operation or freeze or lock up?

Before I retired a couple years ago, the crash medication stuff in the truck I was driving would occasionally slam on the brakes for no apparent reason. Only thing I can think of is it was picking up street signs or something and thinking a crash was eminent. Not a desirable trait on an ice covered road in the mountains.
