Very sad news. I know there are a few of you on here...

šŸ˜ž

Dear Camp Cherry Valley Campers, Staff, Alumni, and Greater LA Scouting Family -

For the last seven months, key members of the staff and board have worked tirelessly towards creating an opportunity to continue the legacy of camping at Cherry Valley, Scoutingā€™s original and first island camp. We were keenly aware of the generations of Scouts, hundreds of thousands of us, who have experienced the joy and fun and unmatched waterfront camp experience that Cherry Valley has offered since 1923.

As you may recall from earlier emails, our lease is up and we did not have $10M+ to invest in the camp - funds that would have made us competitive for a new lease from the Catalina Island Conservancy, our landlord. For the last seven months, we have partnered in good faith with the Conservancy on a solution that would have allowed us to sublet the camp during the summer. We were initially told that this new arrangement would be in place by the end of August 2023.

Regretfully, late last week, with a summer sublet still elusive, ongoing expenses, and no way to commit to staff and campers that we would actually be able to camp at Cherry Valley, Greater LA Scouting made the painful decision to empty and vacate the property at the end of the month.

I know that this comes as difficult news for more than a few, and I understand. However, our campers, our staff, and Scouting as a whole can all take enormous pride in the lives changed, the unforgettable memories, and unequaled adventure that Cherry Valley has provided to so many youth for so long.

Weā€™ll lower the American flag one last time on January 31st and bid farewell.

If your troop has a camp deposit for Cherry Valley, weā€™ll be reaching out to you next week in the hopes that you will join us at Camp Big Horn instead.

If youā€™d like to be a part of our final volunteer work party at Cherry Valley, please keep your eyes on our Facebook page for more information.

Thanks for all you do to make the magic of Scouting possible.

I want to say it was 1972

šŸ˜‰

When I was in scouting, we would do weekend shooting sports trips. Camping out in the desert, blowing stuff up. The kids all had a blast!

Then they changed the rules...

No guns Anywhere except a registered BSA camp. Funny you brought up Firestone. I think it's one of the last places you can shoot now.

Everyone looked forward to those desert shooting sports trips.

Especially us dads!

Another great American tradition twists in the wind dying a slow deathā€¦.

BSA , that is Boy Scouts of American officially died the day they became ā€œScouting USAā€ which inevitably lead (and by design) to including faggots and girls.

The homo activists saw the vast empire that the BSA had amassed and put their lawyers the task to bleed it dry and they did.
At one time the BSA owned an enormous amount of beautiful land worth an incredible amount of money.

Sucks. My boys have great memories of Cherry Valley.
I am glad that to the best of my knowledge the scouts own PhilMont in New Mexico.

I have a bunch of pics somewhere. It's right on the water on Catalina. Lots of fun stuff to do. šŸ‘šŸ¼

Damn this sucks. I did my mile swim in the harbor there. One night some resourceful scouts built a snare and got a pig. That thing woke all the campers up. Sounded like someone was getting killed.

Thatā€™s unfortunate. Place is awesome. We did a 55 mile 10 day trip to about 12,000 feet of I recall. Two groups of 12. My son and I led one group. Even my ex-wife did it. One of the best experiences of my life.

My son and myself did something like that in Yosemite. 10 days in the back country. Half Dome was just the beginning. One of my favorite memories as well.

Lots of memories at Cherry Valley. I did staff there for two seasons. Taught canoeing and leathercraft. Fun times. "Sad" :(

Pretty accurate assessment of what happenedā€¦ Then they pissed off the largest group of scouts in the country (LDS) they broke off and did their own thing and then BSA doubled down on it.

I am an Eagle Scout, 5 palms, OA vigil, and one of 6077 recipients in the history of scouting for the heroism award for saving life. I was a district commissioner, etc. I have zero involvement anymore in the organization. They made their bed, and unfortunately many (often fatherless) young men have lost what was once a good organization to learn skills and morals from.

Sea base was another great one, loved going there the two trips I did.

I grew up in a small rural farm community and I was very active in the BSA for a couple of years. We had many boys from broken homes that attended and our Scout leaders were good men who took the time to help mentor and get involved with these boys often including them in family functions with their own boys. So many great opportunities to influence these young men to civility and the ones that would commit they could go on to excellence. As you well know an Eagle Scout had a much higher rate of personal success than their contemporaries.

But the BSA encouraged moral responsibility and righteous living something the victimhood culture couldnā€™t let thrive because it would be antithetical to their plans to destroy an independent self sufficient society and replace it with a form of communism ultimately. This all happened while we are entertained to deathā€¦ā€¦ā€¦

I remember overhearing one kid say to the other one night...

'Yano, this is basically a young Republicans meeting".

Hell right! šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡²
