We have a 2006 21 foot Duffy. We can be driving and suddenly have all power loss and be dead in the water. You can turn the key on and off and put it any position and hear the clicks from the speed controller but no movement from the prop. I think I have narrowed it down the the throttle being faulty. Duffy boats wants $900 for a complete new throttle assembly but I think it just needs re wired. Does anyone know of a shop in Orange County that could handle this? Or any other ideas what the problem could be?

Start with a voltage test... Work your way through the system. If it's electrical, you should be able to find the problem pretty quickly.

Thanks for the reply... hardest part is some days it works flawlessly then the next cruising and all power loss ..
I found this on the internet

No problem, could be as simple as the contacts inside the throttle have just worn out and it needs a rebuild or replacement.

I had an issue with my neutral safety switch out at Meadview many years ago. Luckily I had my work truck with tools and a wire nut. So I just bypassed it so I could clear the boat ramp and be on the water. It only took a few minutes to get it done. I just had to make sure I was in neutral before starting her up.

Looking at the back of that throttle, I see 3 main electrical components, part numbers on 2, probably a part number under the sticker of the top one, they look easily replaceable

Speed controls go bad on the Duffy's and yes they are expensive but you can get a rebuilt one for less money. Ask one of duffy repair guys where to find them. I know mine has rebuilt in it

JAM Marine in Costa Mesa or Fountain Valley. Try Jesse Jr. at (714) 656-8748. All they do is Duffy's. We've used them twice on mechanical issues and they are great.

I believe I have the wiring diagrams at home and can drop them off when I get back from Havasu tomorrow night. I'm in HB also.

Yes ... I know these boats ... same exact thing happened to mine. All of a sudden it would quit for no reason ... then be fine for awhile ... they are correct ... it “is” the throttle assembly . I was quoted $1600 to replace it in 2015 ... Duffy care is expensive ... but the guys at Duffy know their stuff. I even looked for alternative fixes ... nope ... go with their quote and repair. Good luck.

2 micro switches and a potentiometer... Is it failing in both fwd and rev?

Should be about $40 in parts and a few hours to replace all 3. Can you Solder?

Same problem but zero power forward or reverse .. wait 15 to 45 back to normal

Yes exactly - - - sometimes. I can get in, go for a 3 hour tour.... no problems.... next time..... if I go full speed 😂 . . . . It may or may not cut out.... if it does.... I simply go 3/4 throttle for 10 minutes and I can return full throttle for the rest of the ride. AS YOU KNOW -very frustrating.

This all seem to start right after I really discharged my batteries a lot. Well... I replaced all 8. which you know is not cheap. Problem still happens.

Let me know if you get it resolved as I will let you know. FYI I called the number of the company someone posted above - no answer and VM box is full.

Make sure you check out the cooling on the motor drive. Ours had one bad fan and the drive would drop down to "cripple" mode until it cooled down, then after 30 minutes or so you could cruise at a decent speed again. Two new slightly oversized fans ($7.00 each) from Digi-Key and all was good again.

On mine.... MOST of the time - it's when I first get in it.... I have the trouble..... and it's operation normal within 3-4 minutes. other times it's when I first get in and never goes away - about an hour is all I can do - we tend not to be out much longer ... when that happens. Just from frustration. As you likely know, these motors get quite warm.... the extra fans are a great idea to add.

On ours the console/engine cover has a single 120mm fan, the motor drive behind the Stbd side of the aft settee has two 100mm fans. It's the motor controller fans that were causing our problems.

Same issue, there is a neutral safety switch that will not allow it to go forward to reverse if it’s not in neutral on start up.. but I don’t think that’s my issue
After turning the key on and off 100 times then all of sudden it will start and run for the rest of the day

Maybe it’s time for fans and throttle rebuild

Sounds to me like a sticky microswitch... Can gently give them a few taps when the issue is occurring and see if it fixes anything. (Black boxes on either side of the round potentiometer) May be able to see the piston portion hanging up, it will be a 1/8" plastic dowel, usually being pressed down by a metal lever.

Also leave the throttle SLIGHTLY off neutral when the boat is sitting. It will put the switches in their other state and might get you a bit more life out of them.

So I bought all the pieces from jk electronics in Westminster. You can find them on Amazon as well. Installed it and seems to be working. I have not had the chance for a long drive yet. You do need to drill a small hole for the set screw on the pyrometer

Get Some and All:

Sorry for reviving this thread, but I'm trying to complete a repair to my Duffy Instaspeed throttle, and my design is somewhat different than yours and as shown in the rebuild link. For some background, the problem I'm experiencing is that there is a "dead spot" in the forward throttle position. In other words, when I move the handle forward about 3/4 of the way, the motor "stalls". If I move the handle back or forward beyond this dead spot, the motor resumes and everything is fine. I've confirmed with an ohmmeter that the dead spot is in the potentiometer (aka "pot" or rheostat), and I've obtained the replacement.

The problem is that instead of gears, my throttle has a black collar and handle shaft that is attached directly to the pot shaft, as shown in the picture, and I can't seem to get the black collar/shaft off of the shaft of the pot. There is one set screw, which I've removed, and what appears to be a turn limit pin for the throttle handle. I'm thinking the limit pin has nothing to do with securing the collar to the shaft, but the collar won't budge, and I don't want to get too aggressive for fear of destroying something.

Am I missing something here for removing the collar? Any suggestions about how to proceed? Of course, I'd rather not involve Duffy, but I suppose I can check with their parts department and see if I can get a new collar (if that's what it's called).

Thanks for any advice or suggestions!

I replaced the throttle with a rebuilt unit.. still did not solve the problem
I bit the bullet and replaced the entire throttle and speed controller spendy at $1600 but at least the boat will not leave us stranded

I know - mine is on its last leg. It cuts out on shift probably 5% of the time so not too bad. A quick key cycle takes care of it.

That’s how mine started then it got continuously worst. Last time we were docked at pelican isle and took 45 min to turn back on. Almost had to post a rescue thread

I had the trouble with the throttle as well.... bought the micro switches and the potentiometer. Before I got a chance to replace them... I got a new problem... all 8 batteries dead.... 5.4’ish volts and hydrometer flat nothing.

I charged the batteries up and took the charger to Duffy to get tested...... well.... George (who absolutely knows these boats) walked up to the counter.... grabbed the red connection and said that’s your problem... I changed the connections and I have ZERO throttle problems... to be clear, he said that is my dead batteries problem... didn’t discuss the throttle situation.... I’m just wondering if the better connection is what happened to fix it?

FYI, I'm in the process of replacing my potentiometer, and unfortunately the original model is not listed at the above link, and "No Longer Available" from Newark / Honeywell: https://www.newark.com/honeywell/rv4naysd203a/potentiometer-carbon-20kohm-10/dp/04F8775

however, I was able to find one that's identical in appearance, part number, and specification (though perhaps no longer made by Vishay Spectrol) here: https://www.jameco.com/z/RV4NAYSD20...r-Potentiometer-20k-Ohm-10-2-Watt_241656.html
