That's awesome.

I'd think some retired military pilot would have more than enough hours and TONS of experience. Yeah?

Shit, get some guy after 20 years flying in a war zone, now retired.

I'd like to crew on that ship.

Military experience will help since the fire fighting helicopters are usually from WWII.

I'm pretty sure agencies like OCFA and LAFD and LaCoFD at least have some Federal Excess Blackhawks or something. I'd hope so anyways.

OCFA has 2 Hueys and 2 Bell 412's. You're confusing the aircraft with the pilots.:p

Thank the Lord for Fire Suppression Aviation, saved my place more than once.
That would be an interesting job.
Many moons ago I got to go up with the CDF Air Attack Command plane, piloted by a now deceased gent named Ira Townsend. It was a Cessna push pull, and he had two S-2 Tankers at his command. We went to a small lightning strike deal up by Allegheny. I spent a lot of years working with ground fire guys up here and listening to Air Attack, but being up there and seeing them work their machines and themsevles was a treat I will never forget.
To the original "Air Attack 230", I hope the skies are clear wherever you are soaring these days...

My firm is invested in a company that does complete refurbishing and/or maintenance of the Huey for clients around the world. It is a fascinating business. There were over 15,000 Hueys built from 1959-1986 and hundreds and hundreds still in service around the world. They aren't pretty or fancy, but if you are flying in one today, it is probably as good as new and can take an unbelievable amount of abuse and problems and still get their occupants down safely. They showed me pictures of choppers from Mexican DEA and Venezuelan military that look like swiss cheese and are in for a "hard landing" inspection. :D This company tears them down to the bare frame and rebuilds them like new. Very cool process.

If you are into aviation stuff, the history of the Bell "Huey" is very interesting... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell_UH-1_Iroquois

A longtime friend (practically my brother) flew in the Navy.
As he progressed in rank, he flew less and less...and at hte time he stated he'd love to retire and take a job like this.

But now, with all of the defense contractors offering him huge money to work for them, methinks his flying days are behind him.
But I'll hit him up and see if he's interested :thumbsup

Bell still builds an airframe the can trace its lineage back to the model 204.

There's an old trope in aviation circles that the last Blackhawk will be slung into the boneyard beneath a Huey. :D

Damn that's nice! Whats small town Upland do with that?

Not exactly sure but I believe upland and mercy air are together in service on that one. I know that they are at cable airport, but I heard no longer there. Anyone with further on this?

Its a joint partnership between Upland Fire and a company called Reach, Reach owns and staffs the bird with pilots, Upland provides the medics and permit. I was left under the impression that it does not cost the city a dime, they will run this helo as far as Brawley and Santa Barbra when closer airships are busy. Stunning piece of equipment, $4MM for the helo and outfitted with a $2MM interior. Rides cost around $35K and hopefully you never need one, its pretty much a trauma center in the air that hauls fucking ass.

The real question is why does UFD need a giant ass $1MM hook and ladder when the tallest building in town is only about 50' LOL

Hook and ladder for getting in tight places. Whether driving around town or in a parking lot.

A 100+ foot ladder? They'll need every bit of that to get to the roof of that five story building if the have to park away from the building due to cars, trees, curbs etc.

Also, the farther the ladder is extended, and lowered, the less of a rating it'll have. Both water flow rating and weight capacity.

I may have over stated the highest building by a couple of floors, its 3 floors and is a hospital, pretty sure it wont burn to easily LOL. The real kicker is that Ontario has one if they really needed it. I see them cruising that thing all the time, baskin robbins, grocery store, subway sandwich shop, you get the idea:D

Oh I get the idea :D

Been there done that.

We call that "Truck 441, 10-8, area inspection, or driver training, or company training or......."

You get the idea :D

It's all about money. In L.A. County the air transports are free, I know Upland borders the east end of L.A County "Claremont". I also believe that upland aircraft is just medical transports, no water drops. So if your injured stay in L.A.

Ontario is straight up money, I wouldn't be surprised if they had 10 of them. Rightfully so, they have a serious tax revenue going on, Then you have Upland shaking down guys selling hubcaps:rolleyes

Did El Monte ever solve the murder of the guy with the fast ass VW that used to run at Irwindale? Someone shot him at his shop. Rumor was it may have been a jealous husband, sad deal either way, guy had a faaaast bug.

If there is such a thing (and I doubt it) I was a helicopter pilot in my last life.
If there is such a thing (and I doubt it) I will be a helicopter pilot in my next life.
Flying in a helicopter is the most fun you can have with your clothes on.
I suspect that being the pilot is even better.

I looked at OCFA.org. I am way under qualified. No sling, bucket, high alt, long line or instrument rating. Not near enough turbine experience.
