A family member is having a triple valve replacement. How is recovery for those of you who have had similar?

Not quite the same, but a friend’s 44 year old son had a single mechanical valve done 5 weeks ago, and he’s doing well. Considering that he previously had a serious stroke that left him nearly paralyzed, and he’s actually walking now in spite of it all (albeit with a little support), I’d say that’s encouraging.

He did have a fair amount of post-surgery pain, but that’s to be expected when they crack the chest open. He was in the hospital for about two weeks, but that was partly because the stroke limited his movement and therefore his recovery.

Had heart surgery in my 30's. Pretty sore after, but nothing terrible. Got of the barb's (oxi et. al.) pretty quickly after getting home - if that says something.

Had one done 3 years ago. The cracked chest was the hardest to recover from, the rest of the surgery was easy. Get a pig valve the mechanical one tick enough to hear when you go to sleep.

Are they actually replacing 3 valves? Or do you mean the aortic valve that has 3 flaps?

I have a mechanical valve and you really can't hear it that much. The down side is that you join the coumadin club. Kind of inconvenient but not as bad as it used to be. The up side is that it will last forever.

The pig valves last ten to fifteen years. Then he in for another surgery. If he is in his seventies or older the pig valve is a good choice.

I had mine done at 52 so I would be looking at another surgery about now.

My recovery was about what has already been described.

This came about from a blood staff infection and the antibiotics are ineffective on the bacteria trapped in the heart valves. I’m told all 3 need to be replaced. Happening tomorrow.

I had a bypass. The worst part was the cracking of the sterum. I would take a d3/k2 supplement if not on a blood thinner. K2 works to tell the body where to place the calcium. In the bones where it belongs and not in the tissue.

K1 on the other hand dealswith clotting. A blood thinner disrupts both k vitimins.

Vitamin d is a fat soluable vitamin sotake with fat

I recently started taking dr bergs d3/k2. It has mct oil in the capsule so it can be taken by itself but i still take it with fat

When the jab blew out my heart the doctors told me I'll need one in 10 years and it's almost an outpatient procedure. Read that: Almost Outpatient.
That part was reassuring.

triple value? or triple bypass graft?
I was told triple valve replacement due to the Bacteremia. Not too sure though. This is a close family member and surgery is today.

If it is triple bypass, the recover is pretty rough. I had the surgery about 8 weeks ago. You are in ICU from 1-3 days. On a vent part of that time. After you are in hospital for about a week. once home heavy pain meds. I recovered quickly but there are several areas for complications. make sure he does the breathing excercises! You can message me of you want to chat more. Best of luck to your family member

My wife also had a valve replaced in '17. Started with uncontrollable headaches that eventually led us to the ER. After lots of tests it was determined that she had a blood infection that was eating the valve and sending pieces to her brain(strokes). Once they were able to get the infection under control, they were able to replace the valve(mechanical) and get into recovery. Scary shit for a month. Later they figured out she got the blood infection from a routine cleaning at the dentist. Always take your antibiotics when you go to the dentist. Warfarin for the rest of her life, and she says, 'Welcome to the zipper club'.

I had a 6 way bypass. Monday 1 pm walked in to ER. By 3 pm had an angiogram.(fun stuff)
Surgery was then scheduled for Wednesday at 7 am. 9 hour surgery. ICU all day Thursday, I don't remember much that day.
Fri morning got up and showered after breakfast. (To the nurses dismay) I was walking around the nurses station by Saturday afternoon. Released on Sunday afternoon and was required to walk out to the front entrance. Yes, that was a struggle.
I was sent home with Tylenol for the pain. Was able to walk up the driveway to the gate by the end of the next week, 250ish feet away.
Script Tylenol was replaced with OTC ibuprofen after 2 weeks at home.
January 11 will be 7 years.

Well, triple valve replacement is a go for tomorrow at noon AZ time in Chicago at Northwestern Medical Chicago Memorial Hospital. Supposedly we’ve got 3 of the best cardiac surgeons in the country working to save my family members life. The valve replacement is one thing, but stroke symptoms, pneumonia and bacteremia are another. Prayers appreciated.

My parents were driving from Washington to California to visit us about 12 years ago, my dad started not feeling well and they pulled off the freeway in Fresno.

Turns out he had a failing heart valve, and they quickly sent him across the street to the Fresno Heart Hospital which is one of the best in the country. They replaced one of his valves, but to be honest I can't tell you whether it was pig or mechanical.

The chest crack was the worst, took him 6 months to get over the pain.

Hope all goes well. My Buddy Chris went thru it. Chest Crack like mentioned was hid biggest hurdle. The wired together chest plate making noise st it moved was a big concern of his.

He called me earlier girlfriends nephew is in real bad shape. Bacteria in his blood. He said around 30 years old and might not make it thru tonight. Infection would be the bigger concern. These heart docs are damn good. I was with one yesterday giving a estimate on his house.

Surgery was only about 3 hours rather than the 9 predicted and the surgeons only replaced one valve and cleaned infection out of the other two. Doing MRI tomorrow morning to look for brain bleeds. Recovering in ICU. Thank God! Not out of the woods yet but we’re grateful the surgery went well. Stroke symptoms and paralysis are already getting better too.

How long was your recovery?

My wife may have to be cracked. She has a myocardial bridge that will most likely require surgery. Wondering how long realistically the recovery will be.

I can tell you that in less than 24 hours my family member is already awake and not intubated anymore and talking so that’s pretty amazing. Would love to hear more about the recovery but I’m sure it’ll be difficult and painful.

Many new innovations in the past few years since my first ”Chest Crack”. Back then they used wire to hold your breast together and it moved and hurt if you coughed, let alone sneezed. Now they have metal clasps that really hold the bones together. Still takes time to totally heal, but it‘s a tremendous improvement. Open heart surgery is serious and scary. The results are usually positively life changing. There are many of us that are leading longer, more active lives only because of heart surgery. Please research your prognosis and go to the very best doctor and hospital possible. Mulligans are few and the “Best Cardiologist in Tijuana” is just the “Tallest Midget”.

Yes, the first was 14 years ago. A bad aortic valve was replaced with a natural valve. Surgeon said it would last for 12 years, he was right on the money. I was blessed with great health for 12 years. The valve failed, went back to the same cardio-thoracic surgeon and after replacement he said, “See you in 12 years”. Two years later, life is good. Surgery was not easy the second time but was much better than the alternative.
