Today…….. I earned the trifecta of broken toys.

On Friday, my golf cart broke down. I practically collapsed a lung, pushing it home.

Saturday, my car was dead. Actually my only key fob was put through the washing machine by my wife. It has given up the ghost!

Today, I took my boat to lunch, and afterwards, I couldnt get one motor to start, because the battery was dead. This actually makes me a complete idiot because I knew the batteries were going out, but I figured I’d replace them when my boat gets pulled for service in 3 weeks. If I had brought either jumper cables or my portable jumper box, this would not have been a problem, but that shit was left in my dock box. So I boated home 15 miles on one engine. It was a little tricky getting my boat on the lift, but momentum was my friend! Lol

I generally keep everything I own in showroom condition. It is very strange to have 3 broken items at the same time.

The golf cart gets picked up for repairs tomorrow. My worst case scenario……… having to buy a new custom made lithium battery. That’s on top of the cost for new brakes, shocks, and custom steering wheel.

The new fob for car is in the mail.

And it looks like I will be replacing boat batteries Thursday. I am too lazy to do it tomorrow.

Have you ever had one of those weeks when everything seems to go wrong?

I have a feeling I will be buying 7 batteries and doing a lot of work this weekend if I make it out. Lost the summer and expecting it.

why doesn't your boat have an emergency battery parallel switch to link the batteries?

Everyone has had "those" days. It sucks!

But it's also part of owning a bunch of toys. You'll get it handled.

I was thinking the same thing. Kind of strange to wire the starter battery independently to the motor isn’t it?

My current plan is to call you tomorrow and talk batteries, switches, built in trickle chargers, and wiring.

Here in Florida boat batteries get hooked up in many different ways. Each with their own pros and cons. This is because a boat on a lift, with its batteries completely off, won’t drain if the automatic bilge pumps won’t power up when it rains.

Here is a common scenario where I live. Snowbird keeps his boat on lift. He leaves for summer. He has no trickle chargers, so batteries eventually drain to zero because of automatic bilge pumps, Boat stops draining rain water. Eventually Boat fills up with water and collapses the boat lift, since it now weighs thousand of pounds heavier than the lifts rated capacity. Happens every year. So now you the reader are asking……… why not take the plug out? That too has a host of potential problems. The main one being, if that boat comes off the lift for any reason, it will sink! Also, if the boat plug hole gets clogged and we are back to the first scenario.

On my boat, each motor has its own battery and fuel tank. The manufacturer purposely kept everything separate.

Shlbyntro, I don’t really like my current battery situation. That’s why I am going to call you tomorrow and discuss the pros and cons of my options.

I fell OUT of love with the battery gauge today. It says the battery is fine! Lol

no, that's common in ocean going boats, what's uncommon is that there isn't a way to link the 2 engine batteries together in the event of an emergency. Sometimes there's even a way to link a 3rd and separate house battey in addition to that.

One last thing.

My Perko Battery switch only turns the batteries on or off. It’s not the 3-way Perko switch.

I had a week like that awhile ago.
It started with 8 days off, starting on a Friday. My parents took the kids. Saturday night went to heat spa (1 years old) and it wouldn’t. Turned out the propane regulator broke.
Monday morning, my wife on the way to work, hit a deer 1.5 mikes from home. Next day she takes my TDI sport wagon commuter car. She gets to work and tells me all the bad lights are on on the dash. That ended up a special order EGT sensor. So she drove the suburban and I started driving my “farm” truck (03 Duramax). It needed a smog. It failed. Bad injectors and head gaskets. I ended up selling it to the smog guy. First time in 25 years I haven’t had a truck and finding a suitable replacement sucks right now.
We just got her car back last week after 7500 in damage and the catalytic converter now needs replacement. I’m over October already.

I have always used a Perko switch

Having boat sand rail dirt bike and jet skis it’s rare they’re all down at once something is usually working though.

Right now I need a new stereo battery for boat toy hauler will be due for a couple tires and dirt bike needs fork seals and a oil seal.

Feels like every Monday for me lately😖.
I have numerous batteries at the 5-6+yr range that are making me expect total failure in the near future. A couple of which needed a thorough recharge recently.
The newest is the only dead one, under warranty still at least.

My BIL has a system on his ocean boat that was made by these guys:


Automatic staged charging, it can detect and determination what battery banks need to be charged and at what rate.

His handles three banks.

It can also connect all the batteries together for starting only, and then put them back to charging status, if needed.

It can run off shore power or his onboard generator.

Individual switches on each battery.

Crazy impressive system.

Shlbyntro and I spoke several times yesterday and today.

For my boat……

I am ordering a pair of Odyssey AGM batteries.
1 Noco Genius GenPro 10x2, so that I have a built in 2 battery trickle charger.
120v inlet that I will have to cut a 2” hole to install. It’s basically a poor man’s version of shore power. I just plug into 1 120v receptacle that is now fixed to boat, to charge both batteries.

Heres the funny part. Shlbyntro suggested that I change the Perko switch to one with the ability to combine batteries. I broke out laughing when I figured out I already had that same Perko switch. At least now I know! Lol The moral of the story is, had I known about this, I would have been able to start both motors yesterday. My boat just happens to have the only Perko switch I have ever seen, that is like this, so it was easy to not know how it worked, but I still feel stupid.

My car key fob came today, so now my car works.

My golf cart……… still needs an Exorcism!

Rzr needs a new alternator too 😅.

your boat motor is fine. don't sweat that one. If you're that worried, have a leakdown performed before jumping to any conclusions. You have something like a 5% compression spread between cylinders, that engine is far from tired from a ring and valve standpoint.

My crap is on a rotation of sorts. When one gets fixed, the next will fail. Circle of life, redneck version.

Had a customer in Cali. Really nice guy. Had a three car deep, single wide garage in the valley. At the back, was his Cobra...as in an original Shelby. In the middle, was his GT350, on jack stands, wheels off. He pulled his 29 roadster in, and sucker punched the GT350, knocking it back and off the stands...on to the nose of the Cobra.

He said he just closed the garage door, knowing everything he owned of value he just wrecked. He called the insurance the next day. He was surprisingly upbeat...I'd have died.

Everything started and ran. One golf cart the float seems to be sticking on the carb and dripping fuel. Might need a carb rebuild.

I have a 1991 Ford F-150 that I bought new, and I take immaculate care of it..... Or so I thought. A couple of months ago I did a coolant drain and flush. I thought about changing out the hoses at the same time, but they, "seemed OK".

Yesterday while coming home from a errand in town, I noticed the temp gauge was way up. I was close to home, and when I got there I opened the hood, and sure enough one of the heater hoses was split and leaking.

So I replaced all of the hoses, including the upper and lower radiator hoses. I lost most of the coolant, so I had to go buy more. By being lazy, it bit me. Never again.

I'm good for a while sold the boat, sold the sea doos have a new vehicle with both fobs. I'll stop there so I don't jinx myself for some other thing I have no idea yet might break. 😁
