One person is dead following an officer involved shooting that occurred in north Lake Havasu City around 11 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Sgt. Kyle Ridgway with the Lake Havasu City Police Department said detectives were conducting a follow-up on a missing person case in the area of Craggy Wash when they encountered an individual who opened fire on them.

The detectives returned fire, and the individual — who has not been identified — was pronounced deceased at the scene. According to Ridgway, none of the detectives were struck by gunfire but were transported to the hospital with minor injuries sustained during the incident.

According to Anita Mortensen, public information specialist for the Mohave County Sheriff's Office, the Bullhead City Police Department will be taking lead on the investigation into the shooting.

This story will be updated once more information is available.

Sounds like they were investigating a missing person and the guy opened fire on the officers. I wonder who was missing?

If you have never been past the entrance to Craggy Wash switchback in the road you will be surprised when you enter that part, you cant see it unless you drive in there. I went out for some shooting practice and I ran in to an officer so I asked if that was ok, he said yes but you better go back there to see things. So i made the short distance and when I made the last turn I could see what he was talking about, campers (or freeloaders) as I call them were pretty thick along side of the dirt road, I went back there a couple of miles and they wer still there so I turned around and crossed that place off my list, way too many people to be practice shooting.
It surprised me at how many were back there

Awhile back, a bunch of inmates said people shouldn't care if the "campers" are living back there beyond the maximum BLM camping time allowed.

Maybe they'll change their mind now?

Yep, that’s how it works.

I own a commercial building up here, and we dealt with a homeless camp for about 3 years. After the first murder it was cleared out, but came back with even more people (about 40 trailers, motorhomes and tent sites) within 2 weeks. It took a second murder (a guy chopped up his girlfriend with a machete) before the city got serious about it.

The solution was to ban on-street parking and immediately tow anybody who violates that. Fortunately, it’s an industrial area, and the businesses all have adequate parking on-site.

The sad response is for the missing owner of the truck. F'k the thief! I hadn't read that the missing person was from my neck of the woods, and disappeared in Coconino County. It doesn't say where he was camped, but a lot of people head out north of Drake, and south of Williams. I used to do a lot of firewood cutting alone up there. Always carried, but was more worried about wildlife than tweakers.

Missing victim was out on the north rim, Jacob Lake area. Page substation was the group that found the campsite and reported truck missing.

I don’t know why there isn’t an open season on these type of people. Obviously they contribute nothing to society in general and for the most are just habitual criminals. Sorry just tired of reading this crap all the time.

Google earth. Doesn’t look too bad. Lots space still available.

I might rope off a section, and setup a campground, and charge $10 a month to store your boat or RV. 😜

They are probably living on a pension or social security.
This is what’s left of their life.
Sure they drink….how else do you find your life in a wash.😜

Like every neighborhood, there are one or two bad apples. 😉

Probably didn't want to answer questions about the missing person. Stupid games, stupid prizes. The missing guy will turn up eventually, although he's no doubt taking a dirt nap.

Since Sunday, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has sought information related to a deceased person found near the roadway on I-15, in Nevada. According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, that victim has been identified as a missing Prescott man.

According to Nevada authorities, the victim was found at about 7:26 a.m. on Oct. 6. Responding officers reportedly found the victim suffering from apparent trauma to his body, as well as multiple gunshot wounds. According to Nevada investigators, that victim has been identified as 66-year-old Prescott resident, Russell T. Vinton.

Family of the deceased announced his identification in a Facebook post earlier that day.

“My uncle has been found deceased,” said Queen Creek resident Elizabeth Lawson. “He was killed while camping and was located in Nevada. This is not the outcome our family expected, but now we have some sort of closure since he was found. We will never know why someone did this to him.”

According to Coconino County authorities, Vinton has been missing since last weekend, when he was seen camping in the area north of the Grand Canyon. He was reported missing by family members earlier this week, after sources say he failed to appear for jury duty. Vinton’s vehicle was ultimately found Wednesday morning in the area of Craggy Wash, with two Lake Havasu City Police detectives traveling to the area to investigate.

Police say that Vinton’s vehicle was occupied by 61-year-old Patrick N. Champion. According to Lake Havasu City officials, Champion opened fire on detectives when they arrived, forcing those detectives to take cover and return fire. Champion allegedly rammed the detectives’ police vehicle, causing minor injuries to both investigators. City officials say that Champion exited Vinton’s vehicle before being fatally shot during the ongoing exchange of gunfire.

The Bullhead City Police Department has been tasked with continued investigation as of this week, into the alleged exchange of gunfire between Champion and Havasu detectives.

Coconino County investigators will now lead the investigation into Vinton's disappearance, with assistance from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

As of Friday night, the victim's 2017 "Man Cave" travel trailer remained unaccounted for. The trailer may be identified with a license plate reading "5LA50N."

This story will be updated as additional information becomes available.
