What’s a drum delivered cost?

Edit: on their website I’m seeing $9 a gallon. Seems better to keep buying locally

Always buy avgas from an airport as it will be as fresh as possible and even pick a high volume airport as well.
Our boat is stored and used in Lake Havasu. Not driving to a high volume airport or even Havasu airport for (2) tanks of gas. I’m just concerned about the quality of the gas I am buying for almost 5 dollars a gallon.

I have ran hundreds (might be thousands now) of gallons of Parker Oil AV through my outboards without issue. It smells like AV gas, and its blue like AV gas, I'm not going to worry about it.
I know the smell, never looked at the color, so its blue?

Freshness really isn’t an issue with leaded fuel. It retains its octane over a very long period of time unlike ethanol based fuels.

You’re right though. I always use the Parker airport. If I’m lucky I run into Wheeler for a few laughs while I fill up lol

If you built your motor with AvGas or race gas specs in mind you would. No way am I going to any old fuel station and trusting their pumps and a truck driver to be sure it’s the appropriate octane.

I use the airport because if there fuel were bad it results in loss of life. That’s the quality I want when I’ve spent thousands on my motors.

I didn’t think Parker Oil was any old fuel station. I don’t have a spec. built motor, I mainly use AV gas for octane, no ethanol & long storage life when boat is stored.

Old thread, I know... renew?

I too have heard that blurb about Avgas not being good for high rpm engines, yet have run it for years. I sure wish I knew more about the technical side of that argument however. Someone just guessing because airplanes really are low rpm engines?? Or true technical data?? If so, why does it seem to work fine for myself and so many others??

Guys, I have a 5 gallon plastic gas can full of 100LL Avgas. It has never been in the sun, but it HAS been in the 130 degree Havasu heat. For nearly 4 years. Think it's still any good??

Will the Lake Havasu City airport still sell you Avgas in jugs for race use?? Where on the airport do you go to get to the pumps? I have a pilots license if that helps...

Thanks!!

in havasu, i think even kiowa drive thru has av gas...........no? might be wrong, but thought i saw it? might be labeled race gas, 100+ octane?
yup, just checked...........kiowa drive thru has 100 octane av gas........if this is about getting rid of, nordic will take it, we'll mix it with oil change oil and use it to heat our lam shop in the winter........might last us a week @ 100 gal when mixed🙄

for the few bucks it cost, toss that old shit, not worth finding out it causes an issue. You can pull right up to the pump at havasu airport and fill up whatever with 100ll. You have to go in and get the gate code first. And to turn on the pump a tail number, that’s ez with all the planes nearby.

Well, I tend to trust the actual airport gas more than public pump stuff, and I suspect it might be cheaper too. Man, I've filled up my boat at airports all over Arizona, but some airports are getting persnickety about it, and some not allowing it at all anymore. Even lonely country airports. Glad to hear Havasu is open minded about it! The airport is close by, and I've got dozens of tail numbers stuck in my brain from the good old days when I flew a lot. (Before it became something only the filthy rich can do--> ah, the good old days.)

Note: not looking to get rid of my old fuel; I'll find a use for it. However, the "shelf life" of Avgas is truly amazing. I've literally seen planes fly with 10 year old fuel with no problems, though it worried me for the guy...

What a pleasure it is to rebuild a carb that was run on Avgas; even if it had all evaporated away. Pure clean and fresh inside!!

Heck, the stuff even smells nice!

I am still puzzled/amazed that pump gas will barely dissolve grease now if used to clean a part. I just don't understand how that can be....

???

Thanks!!

Ha! One time I needed to test run my boat after a repair. At the time I was far from any source of Avgas. So I thought it might be ok to run it (on the trailer) at idle and a few quick revs under zero load to test my repair.

OMG, what a mistake!! I could not shut it down!! It just kept running and dieseling and I had to stuff rags in the carbs to stop the engine! Then, like a total idiot, I left that fuel in there, and due to "Life", the boat ended up sitting for two years. It destroyed the entire fuel system... it crudded up the whole system; carbs, lines, pump, EVERYTHING, with a gunk that not even that "Nuclear Acid" from "Alien" will dissolve! What a nightmare!!

Where are you running into issues getting Avgas at airports in Arizona?

I used to get into an argument with one of the line guys at Marana all they time when I would fill up jugs with Avgas. He'd tell me it was illegal, I'd ask him to show me where any regulation says it is illegal, he couldn't. He would say stuff like "The FAA is in the airport and writing tickets" and other nonsense. I'd always respond that I'd be over at my airplane for a while, the FAA guys were welcome to chat if they stopped by (there were never any FAA people).

The biggest issue for a user of Avgas is running it in a road vehicle and not paying taxes.

The Santa Monica Airport used to take their fuel truck behind some hangers where no one could see it and then tell us where it was so we could meet up with it and fuel the boat (which had racing numbers on it).

It’s like they wanted to sell fuel but it was some kind of illicit deal.

AV gas is a great fuel but games like this is why we elected to just go back to 91 for our race engine builds.

Not sure how true it is, but heard the Havasu airport is a little tougher now than just getting the gate code and driving on, but always worth a stop at Hangar 24 for some food and beverage.

I've been running straight a AV for a long ass time. I always run 1/2oz per gal of marvel mystery oil with it If I have to buy a large quantity normally I will go to Desert skies and pay cash it's the cheapest 100LL there is. As of late i have been getting it at Parker oil and doing an approx mix of 20% non eth premium/80% AV mix with the mmo. Lil gas makes it burn faster.

What's the deal with the MMO added? So for 30 gallons of fuel you add 16 ounces of MMO to your mix? I run straight AV gas as well so I'd like to learn about this. Thanks

No exact science but basically yes and the mindset has been around a long ass time. While 100LL has a significant amount of lead it's an extremely dry fuel that affects hoses and rubber carburetor parts as well as fuel pump seals and diaphragms. I run a mmo in everything and have for decades. I run it in my old diesels, I even run it in my Toyotas and my Mercedes w/pump gas but closer to 1/4oz per gal. Keeps injectors/fuel sys clean and lubed. Lawn mowers and generators too. Helps with shit pump fuel. (I also recomend blue fuel if avail) In gas/boost applications (for me currently schiada and procharged/nitrous nova) it's closer to a half ounce per gallon for me. In low boost id lessen the ratio a bit and ck your plugs. It additionally lubricates the valve train keeps carbs clean and reduces carbon buildup. I used to run it in my offshore boats no matter what fuel/tune id run. I was told about this trick from two different prof drag racers close to 40 years ago along with a well known engine builder. I also knew someone years ago that ran it in there piston engine airplane. I buy gallons of it at Walmart. Best deal. Also 100LL burns a lil slow. A bit of non-eth fuel speeds up the burn a lil. Pour a couple ounces of each in the dirt and light it and you'll see what I mean.

Teague built us an engine once that ran on 100LL. He said to add some two stroke oil to it, would help provide some lubrication the av gas lacks. So we did. Supposedly for valve seats among other things.

The two-stroke oil thing has been around equally as long and way back Castrol was recommended. I heard they even put a tad in nitromethane in the early days. Same concept. I heard of some people using the Amsoil saber two-stroke oil in AV with good results.

I don’t know what you run it in but it ain’t worth risking to save a few bucks on fresh gas.
Run the old stuff through the lawn mower or generator or something.

Any way to get the current "scoop" on that?? (Fuel at Havasu airport,)

In the past, have been told at some small airports around Tucson that it was illegal, and they would not do it. It's been a while... Avra Valley was one I believe. It's not illegal, though pumping it straight into a street car probably is; for both EPA and road tax reasons.

Hangar 24. Went there to check it out once. Service is terrible. Lots of flies. Got bitched at for taking a quick hit off my vaper. Then, to add insult to injury, got the bill and found out the beer was SEVEN DOLLARS a glass.

NOPE, never again. The food was mediocre at best anyway. Oh!! Almost forgot!! They insisted on having a credit card "on file" even though I was paying cash. Then, I paid the bill with cash, and THEY CHARGED MY CREDIT CARD TOO. Took a week to get that straightened out. Yeah, screw "Hanger 24"!

Years ago I tried to get gas in our DCB at a small airport in SoCal. They would not let me do it. I tried to argue that there was no road tax violation because it was a boat but they did not care. I can legally buy race gas in California and on the form they make you fill out you put that you are using it in a boat and it's not a problem. Not sure why airports have an issue with this.

That’s about the same price as the place in Havasu at the pump.

91 non -ethanol is just above half that. $5.20 or
So.

Thanks for the info and it makes a lot of sense... sounds like MMO is in my future fill ups.

I'm assuming the same will apply to EFI which I run...

Glad this popped back up. Gonna run it in the new boat.

Who do you call at the airport?
Desert Skies sells the fuel.. I never called in my 21' daytona, I just rolled up and walked in and talked to them. They told me where to park and pulled the truck up to me. It didn't require much though.

Parker Oil off Industrial is pretty easy to access, not sure why you would want to drive farther from the ramps than needed.

Last time was about forty cents a gallon. I always preferred the airport because that fuel has to keep airplanes from falling out of the sky lol

I’ve never had bad fuel from Parker Oil but just always felt better about airport fuel than I did gas station.

Parker Oil was $4.99 today. Desert Skies could not give me a price. They said they are not the ones selling the fuel so they did not know the price.

I also checked the Chevron down near the LBR and the were $7.50 a gallon. Pretty high for Av.

$5.00 for AV at the pump Is kick ass! I’m 100% down with that. Right around the corner from Barrett too. Easy peasy.

Think it’s $6.00-$8.50 at airports around here and varies airport to airport.

Probably the difference is flowage fees the airport charges that Parker Oil doesn't pay.

There are only a handful of refineries that produce 100LL, very likely the fuel is from the same place.

Parker is SOOOOO easy too! Very rarely anyone there, fill one side, pull up and back over to fill the other, or just make the loop. The negligible cost difference from that to non ethanol makes the AV a no brainer!

I read a post from the owner of Parker Oil years ago that they supply the 100LL to the airports (at least Parker Airport). Not sure if that's still true.

As long as you're not buying mystery "race gas" from Running Man, I think you're safe.

What part of the airport? I have only flown in and had a fuel truck refuel the plane I was flying. I have never driven in.

I'm sure someone knows more than I do. When I was running a brummet turbo engine tuned on 100LL, I was told it was a very dry fuel and should throw a little oil in the tank at fill up.
100LL is $6.20 at the airport. Ridiculous.
