Hi guys, new here.
I'm interested in putting a 565 Mercury Racing engine in a Hallett 255 walk-thru with XR drive.
Do you guys know anyone running this set-up? What prop?
I'm wondering how it would perform.

My guess 30 pitch bravo 1 around 87 mph.

I run a 525 / XR drive with a 26 pitch prop. I’ve ran 75 mph with this set up.

I have a 255 with a 540 merc and a 26 and see 73-75 on GPS on a good day. 565 is a torque monster, not sure you would see any difference in the top end. Dont think you will have enough power to spin a 28 and be efficient.

Personally, if it was my build, I would stay away from the 565 and go with a 540. The 565 has to run 89. 540 is tuned for 87.

Or, put a 600 Merc as it requires 87 octane to run and you lookin @ maybe 80 mph on standard day baro, temp conditions and sea Level.

That's over a $20k difference in cost though. Obviously that is the ultimate way to go if you have the funds for it.

Personally, if it was my build, I would stay away from the 565 and go with a 540. The 565 has to run 89. 540 is tuned for 87.

520 with E Tops will make 560. For much less.

If I am not mistaken the 520-565's now have an extended warranty to either 3 or 5 years so making the swap at the end of year one maybe an issue. With some of the issues Mercury Racing has been having with some of their engines I would recommend keeping the warranty intact.

I had a new 540 put in at year one with 30 hours covered under warranty.

Did you delete your last post? Wanting to see 40hp without a tune.

Stock manifolds on the 520 are tiny. Mercury makes it easy to pick up the power. Also I bet a 540 makes more than 540. The 565 probably makes advertised. The 600's usually dyno less.

That is on outboards only. Merc Racing is 2 year on 520,540,565.

Even without the tune it would probably be pretty close. Tune would mainly be to increase the limiter. Turn the same pitch prop further. Gain everywhere.

I think that is waaayy optimistic..

i Was thinkingupper 70’s low 80’s
I did not realize how slow of a hull it is. My guess was based on my 26' cobra with HO and friends Bullet with a 500. Looks like he needs to spend the money and go 600.

Um, no. The 540 is a 520 with headers and a tune. And it’s still 523 CID with a 4” stroke, and a single throttle body. And if you decide to add spark to the tune, it’s no longer an 87 octane engine. Definitely not making 560 with E-tops on 87.

565 has 4.250” stroke (534 CID) twin 80mm throttle bodies, and individual coil per cylinder. The extra 0.250” stroke and extra ETC is worth more than you think. Oh yeah, without messing with the warranty.

But I get wanting to play.

Google CMI's dyno sheets. You can see for yourself. Have you put your hands on the 520 manifolds? The risers are fine. The manifold ports are itty bitty.

The 565 is not worth the price. 5k more and drop a 600 in. No DTS, but a much higher ceiling for gains.

Oh and the 600 looks stellar compared to the butt ugly 565.

I have a 25 Howard open bow walk through with a stock 600 and a 4 blade28 pitch prop it ran 82 after stage 3 tune same prop it will hit the rev limiter at 89+

Bullets are great boats. They are a step hull which helps with top end numbers. That is why the 270 and 290's can run same power plants as a 255 yet better top end numbers.

That is one sweet Bullet. Have you tried to pull a 30 pitch or labbed 29? Guess once you go over 500 hp don't gain a whole lot of speed.

I was going to try a 5 blade but at $1800 I have not been in a hurry. I also wanted to see if anyone has tried one and what they thought.

Learning something new about boat stuff. In the stuff I've messed with has been "normal" 😂 540 meant 4.25 x 4.50...
A marine 540 is a 520 with headers...and is actually a 523, and a 565 is really a 534. Damn, worse than the metric systemo_O

A 25 Bullet is half the size of a 255 Hallett.

If you park a 270 next to a 28 Bullet, which i have done, the 28 Bullet is tiny, skinny, short, literally looks half the size.

Yup a 28 Bullet is really like a 25 boat from other manufacturers

Pretty sure he posted the info about his Bullet cause of my post. I am a Bullet fan for sure. Love the way they handle for there size. My 260 is much bigger. I would love a Bullet like his but with another Nephew on the way my 260 works perfect for my crew. My 3 year old nephew was power napping below last weekend while the rest of them were tubing. Never been a 255 but I like the looks for sure.

Wow, thanks for all of your guy's input. The boat will be used at Lake Mead mostly. We are your typical family boaters, loaded with kids and ice chests, towing tubes, little bit wake boarding. We currently have a 2002 Hallett 260AC with the 525 merc racing. We have owned her for 7 years now. The outdrive just went out on us last weekend (Upper). It was the original XZ drive. We are replacing it with a new XR complete upper and lower and new prop Bravo 1 24p. The wallet didn't like that.
We've never used GPS for a speed check, but the speedo read 74 a couple times ( it's hard to read the speedo at that speed, everything is shaking and the wind is peeling my eyelids back). Conditions, light chop, 105 degrees, 2 people in the boat, trimmed up (probably too far), 1/2 tank of gas, bimini up.
With all of that said, I'm wondering if the higher torque 565 is just what I need. I like to faster than my wife does. So, we dont see 65-70 very often. But. I'd love to go low 80's every once in a while.

If it were me, I would just have the 525 rebuilt and maybe a little hotter cam and heads. Will save you a good chunk of money over the 520-565 engine packages and the 525 is an awesome engine package. I would only go to the new package if you want to change everythingover to the DTS system for digital shifting but not really worth it.

We primarily boat at Mead. Is yours the teal/purple one? Depending on how many hrs are on your 525, I would do the top end along with a Whipple.

It will be the most cost effective way to put that boat in the 80's. Like Andy said above the switch to DTS will add even more cost. Have you already done the drive?

Yes we are looking at getting a Hallett 255 and selling this Hallett 260. But...I just saw the new Hallett 275 and I am really liking it.
255 is roomier. The 275 bow seating is small compared. Depends on how much room you need/want.
