So the wife booked a spot and Campland a few months back. Got lucky and it turned out to be during the SD Bayfair. Got to see the unlimited hydros run, and boy, they did not disappoint. Watch them on tv when I was kid. Still awesome to see!

Buffalo Launch Club every August 1950s.Muncie,Slovak,all of them showed up. Many years later about 2010 met Mira Slovak at Santa Paula Airport. He was leasing Hanger. Incredible story. Still can see him hauling ass out of the pits at Launch Club driving Miss Bardahl.

Awesome surprise!

We were out on Fiesta Island all weekend right across from you, watching the show.

Was great seeing a lot of familiar faces in the pits and finally getting to meet @wzuber out there too.

Great weekend all around.

Last time I watched there they still had real motors. V12 rolls Royce. They had a fantastic sound that is missing now.

Unfortunately I had to work over the weekend and didn't get to go down to the bay this time. I can hear them from my house, and from the job site. Always cool to hear them, better to watch from up close though!

Seems 6 boats were still running for the main event, that makes for great racing. I know it's often case where very few turbines are still running by the main. Seems salt water has commonly taken it's toll on the turbine blades in Mission Bay.

In the mid-80s when I was around 14 years old, I worked at a gym. One of my gym buddies was in his early 20’s, his name was Clay and I can’t for the life of me remember his last name.

At any rate, his dad was the crew chief for Miss Budweiser when it had a piston motor in it. When they moved to jet power, he bought the now-former Miss Budweiser and they raced it in unlimited hydros as the class ran both setups for a few years IIRC

He invited me to their house over in Cowan Heights a few times, Seeing the boat in their garage was pretty awesome for the young me.

Posting because I’m curious to see if any inmates knew of this family.

I made it on Friday for a few hours. It was fun to watch and I miss boat racing :/ Last time I was in San Diego I was racing in the drags on Crown Point and won :) Would be nice if they Brough them back too but the sports are slowly dying. bummer.. but it was s great time. All the boats were on Vacation island

Other classes still run big blower motors. They were running a shorter course, so we didn't see as much of the action. We sure did hear it though!
I do remember back when they had a mix. A few teams still running the V12's while a few had switched to turbines. I used to love watching them on tv when I was a kid.

I accidentally deleted my first post fumble fucking around with my phone in the garage.

Anyway, I believe the last name of the crew chief at that time was Neff.

I actually saw your original reply but didn’t have a chance to reply…thanks for the insight, that may have been them.

It’s just been decades…

Yes, Jeff Neff was the Bud crew chief for the last piston hulls, although 1984 started with Dave Culley. Ron Brown took over when they went turbine.

I saw this in Iowa in August when I was on a road trip.

I wonder if he is running in SD this weekend?
