I use something like this but w/ a combo lock for my nerf guns….

This is exactly how I transport as well. The magazine is loaded sitting next to the unloaded gun. The case is under the backseat of the truck with the dog riding on the seat.

I don’t know shit about fuck until I meet you through the window. Some depts put out all their stops to their dispatchers, but we make WAY too many stops for that shit.
THIS.... is the big difference out there between agency's. We train, time permitting, to at least run the license plate prior to the stop. We don't go over the air for this, our in car computers do all the work without all the noise. There are times when it doesn't happen, but most of the time it does. That doesn't mean we know jack shit about the occupant, but at least know ahead of time if there are wants/warrants associated with the car.

So riddle me this, to the industry experts on the board (LEOs), can I bring my standard G19 magazines into the state if they are unloaded? I don't have any of those pansy-assed magazines. I'm just passing through anyway, so they don't need to be loaded. Or can they be loaded and outside of the firearm if I'm a resident of another state?

Safety First. Not in Cali. Van, under the drivers seat.
But the passenger seat has the stock locking door on the seat base box underneath.
I doubt it would be Cali legal.
I don't even risk it going to California anyway. Knives and big wrenches!

IDTS. NOT IN CA. Illegal to possess.

When I do go and bring a long gun to go shoot with the kids I change magazine adapters to accept Glock 10 round mags in the 9 mm Carbine.
The Ruger 10/22. No problems.

10 Round Phoenix Arms SA are a nice small pistol too. Legal in Ca.

If someone takes longer than a few seconds to yield, or I get that intuition.. I’ll run the plate so it’s on my CAD history… but I’m not going to sit in the car (coffin) and look at the return. If it’s stolen all kinds of bells and whistles and red computer screens happen so even a motor would know what’s up.

Loaded and on me.

Don’t do shit to create a PO contact.

Don’t do something for a PO to ask you to step out of the vehicle.

No you don’t not have a gun in your vehicle

So if you get pulled over and LEO says “do you have any drugs or weapons in the vehicle” you will say no?

I wouldn’t give them a reason to ask me that.

That is not a common question.

Police officers usually only ask question they know the answer too. Also if you have done something to earn that question you better answer truthfully.

I thought it was a routine question but I’m not LEO and I watch a ton of COPS on YouTube 😂

@FlyByWire can you please verify? Is that a routine question or is it uncommon?

Depends entirely.

Where I work now..? No. When I worked in Los Angeles, yes sometimes.

I know LAPD and LASO guys that ask every single time. Depends on the clientele.

Doesn’t mean the person has to tell the truth.. I just assume everyone has guns and drugs already. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I get the are there any weapons drugs or anything I should know about. I just say no or if I have my pocket knife I’ll say just a pocket knife.

Pretty much ends right there. Did have a Chp ask me guns weapons bazookas cocaine grenades etc I looked at him and laughed. He told me he’s had some answer to the cocaine as they got confused. 🙈

I carry Bear Spray almost everywhere. There is talk of the Grizzly being reintroduced in California and those trash bandit Black Bears can get a little spicy. In Baja I switch to Wasp Spray, that shit that shoots 40 feet at high pressure comes in handy for spraying wasps, since there are no bears. Maybe you need some pest repellent in your RV when you travel?
All my vehicles are hard to start. That’s why I carry starting fluid and carb cleaner in them. 😉

Whatever lost guns I don't have, I carry them in locking bags inside the truck and all the ammo stays in my locked storage box in the bed of my truck.
I also carry all the registration info for said "Lost Guns" in my phone.

Like said though any officer would never find a reason from me to become uncomfortable enough to ask me to exit the vehicle.

If I were pulled over in Rice Road I would use the "Black Boat Interiors are awesome" password and hope for the best. 😁

BTW a fire extinguisher is a nice legal item you can carry.

Ok another question for LEOs. When or if stopping a class a motorhome, do you go to the window? Always wondered that because it is pretty high up there. And no I have never been pulled over in the motorhome or anything else for more than 30 years.

I’m not standing on the traffic side for any reason. I go to the door.

10 rd magazines only allowed in Ca.

Although….you can disassemble and separate all the parts, not illegal to own plastic parts & a spring…

I keep mine "truck gun" in a locked safe with the mag out, LO would need a warrant to access my safe, as I understand it (not a lawyer) but that is considered legal. Now the mag size and ammo type seems to be a moving target in Ca lawfare between the courts.
If the cops have probable cause to search the car, a warrant is not needed. Its one of the warrant exceptions and the gun safe would be free game also as its in the car (generally) - see US v Carroll.

That's some pretty old case law, and seems to be about contraband if my quick read of an article on it was correct. Very interesting though ty for the heads up.

If your in a motorhome…

I would lock it up while the rig is In motion
Or at least set it in a back bed room

And
Whip it out while camped at “your home”

Federal Courts have ruled that when the MH is stopped, set up, connected to utilities, in a designated camping or RV facility, and actually being used as a "house", then the legal safeguards related to a residence are intact. However, just being pulled off the road, eating lunch, sleeping/relaxing in a rest area, or truck-stop back lot, then it's considered the same as a "motor vehicle", and "transportation" laws apply.

For the Cal Cops here........... I know that most of you wouldn't disarm your back-up, but is there any legal or policy guidelines on those who fall under (retired) LEOSA?
While I know that I can carry concealed or otherwise be "exempt" from most State possession laws, could I be hassled for my [theoretical] 15 round Glock mags or 30 round AR mags?

It'd be a PITA to have to get "travel mags" just to drive I-40/95 through CA from AZ to NV. (the only time I go through USSCA)

This is why the only guns I bring through California are S&W Model 29s. 6 rounds and no mags.

I never understood the 10rd thing cuz there are some IA’s that allow standard capacity magazines. So while the state does not allow them, you could have purchased them legally during freedom weeks AND are legally allowed to carry them per your IA’s policy and permit. Yet, if another agency is not familiar with the law then you can get in trouble. Such a mess…

LEOSA doesn’t exempt from state mag capacity restrictions. I don’t know a single person that would hassle you (and if I’m being honest, any OTHER law abiding citizen) over mag capacity alone.

Here’s the text though;

I don’t have any illegal boat anchors in Ca.

Even bought a featureless AR - No modifications done….

Although Springfield M1A’s are pretty nice ….

Just don’t have any of those illegal motocross style fuel jugs in the bed of your truck, mister.
Hahaha.....Honest question, do cops really bother with the fuel jugs?

I’m sure somewhere somebody does. Everybody has “that guy”. We aren’t any different.

In my early days if you pressed the right buttons, I’d pencil fuck you with every possible thing I saw. My record was 7 counts.. only time in my career I used our little ticket continuation form. Lol.

When that law first came about, they were giving out tickets for it in glamis. Or at least that's what everyone said, I never got one.

If you live in San Bernardino or Riverside county, just get your CCW. The process is really easy, and if you get your Utah, Florida, and Arizona license also, it covers you for most of the states through reprocity (All you have to do is mail in the application for those states).

The application process is all online, and unless you are a shitbag or a felon, you'll most likely have it within 3 to 5 months.

I was told by reliable source that starting some time next year, you won't have to be a resident of San Bernardino county to apply for a CCW there.

A CCW license through any county in California covers you in the entire state.

I've had Rangers come through camp amd never say a word about it. They would check for spark arrestors.

The fine details of warrantless searches of motor vehicles is more in depth. Some are related to inventory searches, searches incidental to arrest, searches based on probable cause, plain sight, smell and consent.

While a search warrant is rarely needed for a motor vehicle, some detectives will get one anyway.

If you are following the law and doing nothing, what will really happen if they find a gun in your vehicle. I do have my gun unlocked in the truck (magazine is not in it) every time I am going off roading or traveling overnight. I'd rather have the protection than worrying about whether I get a ticket? Cops don't care about a 50 yr old white guy doing nothing wrong.

My only reason for me not having a CCW is the liability that comes with it.

We had a ranger come through because some kids were riding around camp without a helmet....he was super cool....he actually told us that if the fuel jugs were in the back of our truck and not on the ground, they can't/won't do anything about it....

Should you end up using your firearm for protection, it may help with liability by showing that you took training to avoid such situations and to keep bystanders safe in such a situation.

Some I know who are in law enforcement have told me if they want to search they are searching. Not an every stop deal but pc they told me has a wide range.

One of these also told me no pc stand your ground and they have to have a good reason on report. I asked ok which is it then

I’ve never had a vehicle gone through and of course never had any reason to be worried about a search. I like fbw theory give nothing to see stops at the window.

Point being, those bells and whistles is all you need to hear. Not sure how different your CAD's are from ours, but certain beeps mean certain things. You don't need more than a second to wait for that unless your system really sucks. Either way, be safe out there.

Yes for sure! We have the same kind of thing, but it requires working cell service for the car which I often don’t have. I run more than I let on… just poking the bears. 🙃

All required CCW training should include that.

Before in car CAD (I never had one) I kept a scratch-pad and a pen on the dash and wrote down the plate # as I stopped (if I didn't call it in). Much of the county, before 800mghz, had no radio coverage, so if something happened, at least the lic plate was documented.
