So going to Buellton on the 21st and wondering what you guys do about guns in vehicle. They way I understand it, could be wrong and please correct me, guns have to be unloaded in a secure locking container and ammo has to be kept separate and locked also. Might as well just carry a baseball bat. Many years ago I got stopped in my semi, for speeding of course, insert roll eyes emoji,, and cop asked me if I had a gun in the truck. I answered yes. He then asked if it was loaded, to which I replied yes it’s not a club. He laughed and said best answer he ever heard and let it go but told me I could get in trouble having a loaded gun. Does a motorhome come under a domicile rule? Seems to me trucks with sleepers did but been a few years. Don’t want to go to jail over it and lose my guns, but don’t want to get dead either. Leo’s anybody? Oh I do have a concealed permit for Colorado but understand no reciprocity in Cali.

Loaded and on me.

Don’t do shit to create a PO contact.

Don’t do something for a PO to ask you to step out of the vehicle.

No you don’t not have a gun in your vehicle
I believe you have it all correct. But I doubt you're going to get dragged out of your car and searched for a simple traffic stop, so there's that...;)

These.

Kind of what I thought and always wondered how vested a cop would really be knowing what they know about sketchy people. I’m always amazed at some of the YouTube vids where they get up in the cops face for a minor infraction. Yes sir, no sir.

Seriously though. I do this a couple thousand times a year… I’m always always always looking for guns and drugs, but if you don’t give me a reason to look any further than what I can see from your window.. it ends there. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’d never encourage anyone to break the law… but protect your family how you see fit.

I keep mine "truck gun" in a locked safe with the mag out, LO would need a warrant to access my safe, as I understand it (not a lawyer) but that is considered legal. Now the mag size and ammo type seems to be a moving target in Ca lawfare between the courts.

Trump has promised 50 state reciprocity but that is down the road. A motorhome is considered your residence when parked but is a vehicle when on the road. Here's the kicker. A cop would need a search warrant to search your motorhome (or your vehicle for that matter). So if you're in a motorhome and the weapon is not in plain view there is no reason to worry. The Penal Code states that the gun has to be in a container with either a combination or key lock. Before I had my CCW, I carried my handgun in a zipper pouch with a key that I bought out of a gum machine for 25 cents. It used a tiny key and the lock mechanism worked but if I needed to I could just beak the tiny lock and get to my gun. The bullets have to be carried separately by don't have to be in a locked container. The trunk is considered a locked container but not the glove compartment. When I had my my motorhome I carried my pistol loaded in the cabinet over the couch. Where I believe that laws should be obeyed, I also know that when I'm out on a lonely road, my first priority is my safety and the safety of my family.

Is it all guns or just pistols locked in a container in Commiefornia? For example, if I had a modern sporting rifle (which was lost), would that have to be locked up? This is where Nevada is so easy.

Maybe check the mag limits. I'm not sure the status on that so I guess we need to take a look.

We've had safes in our vehicles for years, they come in handy for storage of computers and valuables when traveling. You may want to consider where that stuff is gonna be stowed when you are not with it.

Nevermind, I just logged into my USCCA account just to look up Cali, it's been awhile since I have checked out the laws there. You're better off with a slingshot in that dump 🤣

The banned firearm laws are pretty extensive also

In a vehicle in CA, the firearm must be in a locked container with the ammunition separate from the firearm. The ammo can be in a mag, in the same container, but can't be touching the gun. Magazine capacity limit for handguns in California is 10.

The center console or glove box are not a locked container. A safe in the center console that is bolted or secured to the vehicle is a locked container. If you have a truck, put it in a locked container, in the backseat where it is not readily accessible to the driver. The trunk also counts as a locked container if you have a car.

Rifles or shotguns do not need to be transported locked container, but must be unloaded.

The only time I have been stopped with a gun and CCW in Az, he asked about it and told it was in the console. He then told me that not a good easy access place, so moved it to the door. I my Rv handgun in the door(CA also) long gun under the overhead mattress. I have a Ruger carbine in 9mm so I only have to carry one size ammo.

The statement you posted is my understanding too. Your 10rd mags can be in same locked container as gun but not installed in the weapon.

The guns don't have to be in a locked container, they just have to be locked. You can use a cable lock or a trigger lock as well

Thank you for being reasonable and honest. How's Jerimiah Mc Corkle doing these days? Is he still w/the CHP?

From the DOJ website:

Pursuant to California Penal Code section 25610, a United States citizen over 18 years of age who is not prohibited from firearm possession, and who resides or is temporarily in California, may transport by motor vehicle any handgun provided it is unloaded and locked in the vehicle’s trunk or in a locked container.

The rules do not apply to non-concealable firearms. They do not have to be locked up to transport.

Judged by 12 or carried by 6....you pick.

Don't give 'em a reason to search your vehicle or person and they won't. Every LEO approaches everyone expecting shit to go sideways....make it clear that your goal is to make their day better, not worse, and you will not have any problems.....unless you're black maybe.

Yep! Good man, he’s only got another year or two left.
Nice, tell him sprint boat racing misses him. Haha
He was a great driver back in the day. He stopped racing when he had his triplets. Shortly after, many years ago, he pulled me over on rice rd for exp. Trlr license. I had a scsc event shirt on. We chatted for about an hour in the 95 degree heat. Real nice guy.
Good to hear he's doing well.

I always try my best to avoid being pulled over. Driving closer to the speed limit seems to have helped a lot. Lol
I always keep my hands on the steering wheel in plain view, treat them respectfully and follow their instructions. I always tell them where I'm reaching for my info so they know and of course........no sudden movements. Haha
Never have a problem.

I'm not certain but I think they may know more about you then your best friend before they exit their vehicle and have a pretty good idea of who they're dealing with but they can never know exactly what this particular situation may entail and proceed with caution as normal SOP. May FBW can elaborate?

The times I have gone to Cali I have always had the Glock in the truck or jeep. Never been stopped, too old to do dumb shit anymore I guess lol. Just was curious about the general consensus. Makes no sense to me to carry a club,, but what do I know, I’m from Colorado and Arizona where a man still has right to carry. In Cali I get it because of you know, “the thing”. I agree 110% with judged by 12 not carried by 6. Might want to think about covering up the RDP sticker on Moho and one on Jeep just in case lol.

This is my understanding of the law as well. @FlyByWire can you verify this?

I’m just going to post this and not offer any interpretation to people that say they know more than me. 🤓

Understood! I am looking for clarification on the ammo part. Would I be in trouble if I had a loaded magazine locked in the same box as the unloaded hand gun?

And here’s one for the “put it in the glove box” crowd. Which, by the way, is the worst fucking place to keep it if that’s also where your vehicle documents are…..

I don’t know shit about fuck until I meet you through the window. Some depts put out all their stops to their dispatchers, but we make WAY too many stops for that shit.

I carry Bear Spray almost everywhere. There is talk of the Grizzly being reintroduced in California and those trash bandit Black Bears can get a little spicy. In Baja I switch to Wasp Spray, that shit that shoots 40 feet at high pressure comes in handy for spraying wasps, since there are no bears. Maybe you need some pest repellent in your RV when you travel?

I'm left handed. If I get stopped by a LEO and asked for my license, it's in my left hand front pocket. Pulling up my shirt to access the money clip is going to show the, uh, waistband of my underwear.

So I'll just tell the cop in advance what to expect. My anticipation is that 49.7% of those I might engage in this manner won't give a shit. The 50.3% will say I don't need to see your license, have a nice day.

The weather is pretty nice here too.

Oh, interesting thx. I always assumed you ran plates while stopping and had at least name, home Address etc. Plus any arrest records etc.

That takes too long. While I’m doing that somebody in the car is pulling their fully legally stored gun out of its case and loading it 😛🤓
Copy....eyes on subject continuously to discerne their behaviors etc. In preparation for the hopefully safe contact..

Pretty simple get a locking case unload firearm. Keep loaded mag in the same case just not in the gun.

I travel between Az and ca often. Normally I top off fuel in erinburg and will unload gun there and l put into locked case with mag in pouch in the case for ca travel.

Someone mentioned king guns can be carried in unlocked case or open but if you go through a school zone they need to be locked.

If your in a motorhome…

I would lock it up while the rig is In motion
Or at least set it in a back bed room

And
Whip it out while camped at “your home”
