We decided we're going to the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone for our summer vacation with the kids.

Has anybody been? Where'd you stay? We're going to be camping so campground info would help.

Maybe some inmates to the North can help :thumbsup

Hey 429,

Been there twice. We stayed in the same RV park both times. It is in Moose, which is only like 5 miles from Jackson. Great summer destination. Mtb riding is epic. Yellowstone is cool, only about 30 minutes. My wife really likes the shops in Jackson. The RV park is just OK, kinda getting old but still nice with lots of trees.

Hope that helps.

We stayed at Grizzly and it was pretty good.
They have cabins:
http://www.grizzlyrv.com/
Just outside the gate and the town is really cool to walk around.

If you book rafting get the trip where you and the family don't have to musclefuck a 400Lb raft for a 1/4 mile over slippery rocks and down shear loose rock cut-offs to a beach to launch.

Thanks nganga! Was it this one?

Musclefuck... Noted :D

That's good info.

By the way... I think it was your comment in the other thread I started about where to go that got me on the Yellowstone kick.

I looked at my wife and said "why don't we go up the 15 for a thousand miles and turn right?" :D

Yellowstone is something everybody should do at least once. Jackson is a lot of fun - lots of cool shops and bars

We've always just stayed in the NPS campgrounds inside the park

How are the NPS campgrounds? I assume similar to any other NPS park (Yosemite, Sequoias, etc..)? I'm taking my truck camper so I have a generator and water. What about dump stations? Any recommendations on which one's.

Yep!! thats it, lots of old shade tree's. There is a paved walkway that goes probably 5-8 miles all the way to the Moose ski resort ( I think thats the name) Great bar called the Mangy Moose (IIFC) Great vibe, the entire area.

Maybe you can help me. You been to Sequoia? we're going to the Redwoods, soon as school is out, any recommendations on CG's? Where NOT to go?

We really don't plan, we try to just go where we want.

I worked at the Grand Teton Lodge the summer of 2003. You will love it up there. I suggest camping at Colter Bay. It is in the Grand Teton National Park. They have a great camp ground that has a good general store, horse back riding, marina where you can rent fishing boats or ski type boats. It is really close to Yellow Stone so you can make a few day trips into the park. I think it will be near impossible to get a camping spot in Yellow Stone Park for this summer. A drive through Haden Valley to see the Buffalo, and spending some time at Old Faithful are a must. Colter Bay is also a good spot because you can go back down into the Tetons and check out Grand Teton Lodge (very cool lodge), fish the Snake River, and even head down into the town of Jackson and catch the rodeo (twice a week).

Hope this helps and gives you some ideas.

Oh yeah! Definitely check out Moose Falls. It's only about a mile into Yellow Stone Park from the South entrance. There's a hot spring in the river directly above the falls. So bring your trunks and go for a swim in the nice warm water under the falls! Its really cool.

Also take a little hike to Huckleberry Hot Spring in the John D. Rockefeller Memorial Parkway. It's only a short hike out of Flag Ranch. There is also Camping at Flag Ranch.

If you want any more info, or if this rambling of a post makes no sense you can PM me and I can try to give you some better ideas.

This is on the hike to Huckleberry Hot Spring

This is the Hot Spring. People have made a little dam underneath. It's like a little natural spa.

This is the Grand Teton Lodge's bar patio. The pretty blue drink is a "Grateful Dead." That is also a must do!
IMG_0814.jpg

This is Pacific Creek. If you like dry camping off the beaten path then this is the spot. Well maintained road to get back here and it's free to camp! This area is in the Grand Teton National Forest and it's only about 15 minutes from the Grand Teton Lodge.

Its been years since we stayed in Sequoia. The last few years we went a little further and stayed in Yosemite. For the kids and sight seeing there's much more to do in Yosemite.

It wasn't a bad experience by no means. Just less to do for our liking. If you plan to go a little further and make the trek to Yosemite I can help :thumbsup

So definitely a possibility going a bit into the backcountry.

Huge help Kylemenz. The family really appreciates it.

I'll send you a PM in the next day or so and get some more information from ya.

my aunt lives in jackson so i head up there a couple weeks a year. yellowstone is a good 1hr drive from jackson so mabye make a couple different camping reservations at different locations. definitely save a whole day to check out jackson, u can also head over to teton village where the ski slopes are. lots to do there, id do a jenny lake hike, or string lake hike, and definitely go up to old faithful lodge and watch that thing go off. jackson lake is good for fishing below the damn. lots of buffalo to be seen in the town of Kelly jist outside of teton national park. as said earlier moose is a good place to stop n walk around, gas up and get any essential groceries before headin into teton national park.

theres tooo much to do

Absolutely  Teton/Yellowstone thread coming summer of 2013

Yes sir. Pacific Creek looks very cool and the price is right too ;)

Thanks WT. I was lining our trip out and Moose will be the gas & go place. No way in hell I'm driving all that way and not see Old Faithful go off :p

Jenny lake looks really cool. Definitely plan on hitting Teton village.

I'm thinking we should spend the majority of our time in Teton rather than Yellowstone. Plan on being up there for a week.

You would be better served to get most of your grub and such in Jackson. The stores in Moose and Colterbay are small and don't have much selection. No campgrounds in Moose,Colterbay has full hookup camping or a dry camping spot with around 250 sites.Colter is pretty much the center of gtnp, good spot to base out of.Signal mountain has camping, small store, restaurant and gas.You can rent boats either place. We spend alot of time at colter,we keep our boat in a slip there.Any questions i'll try to help,we actually leave sat. for Havasu to get out of the snow for a while.

A couple of years ago we did Bryce, Zion, teton, and Yellowstone...now that we know the drill we could do it again alot better.

To make the trip fun, do something... sound simple, but we looked at lots of stuff, but didn't do much. Bryce had a lot of neat veiws that took 1/2 a day to drive...but woulda been cooler hiking or biking. We looked at the loop in Zion, but a couple of days hiking in the backcountry woulda been better than the bus tour. Jenny lake has a bunch of fishing boats...but no speed limits:thumbup:. It'd be cool to take a flattie up there...

There's a hwy from the 15 that comes to the Tetons area...on the way is a place called lava hot springs. Awesome fun for the kids, a river goes through town that the kids ride down with rafts, a couple of dive bars near the campground.

So whatever toys you enjoy, bring and use them, don't get stuck being in an outdoor museum.

I've been, but I would take Kyle's advice! We stayed at the RV park inside the park, and it was a fucking joke. Way tight, way small, and it was like staying at a WalMart parking lot with hook-ups. I was very disappointed in it. But, you must go see Yellowstone lake. Its 30 miles long, and is a site to see!!! There is so much to see and do in Yellowstone alone, I would skip Jackson completely (unless you enjoy tourist traps, then by all means, go there and spend all your money!) :p Me personally, I love the outdoors. Shops and stores I can do anytime. Yellowstone will absolutely take your breath away.:thumbup: If I was to do it again, I would stay at the lodge at Yellowstone lake, and just drive a small car up there, and not waste all your money on fuel.

Great info. I think Colter is where we'll camp. I like Kylemenz hidden spot too. But Colter seems to be the center like you said.

We're pretty damn active (mountain biking, kayaking, fishing, etc..). Lava Springs sounds fun, kids will probably dig this. I've got no shame in stepping in a dive bar either. :thumbsup:D

Thanks for the info :thumbsup

I plan to stay at the asphalt jungle...errr... campground for 3 nights only inside Yellowstone. As I said in the previous post, we're pretty damn active. We've got days filling up fast with sights we plan to see. I hope we're only at the campsite to eat dinner and go to bed, wake up early and do it all over again.

I'm not worried about Jackson being to touristy. I guess I'm more about the experience than anything else. Hell... the first time I went to Hawaii I spent an entire week in Honolulu :D You want to talk about touristy :p

You bring up a good point with just driving a car up there. I thought about it but that would take away from my ability to just wing-it camping. I get the kids involved and have them each plan a place they must see along the way or on the way back. If we get hung up site seeing with them I don't need to sweat where we will stay. If worst came to worst I can knock out in a Walmart parking lot for a few. The camper really doesn't effect the truck anyways. If I was taking the 5'er it might have me rethinking it.

I figure the money I save camping (average $50 a night) and the meals I can throw in the fridge will take the sting of the fuel cost away just a tad.

The family is really stoked hearing about all this from the first hand. I can't wait to post up and share the experience with the inmates :thumbsup

This was last July in Yosemite. Just before this I had pushed my son to Vernal Falls bridge, I was totally gassed lol
