Tyson. Rottweiller. Best damn dog in the whole wide world...

Never barked at anyone, never fought another dog, never bit anyone, never escaped from our yard, ever, in 15 years. Never had to scold him for anything. Back in the day he was an excellent travel dog, we took him everywhere...

The time has come to put this ol' boy down. The hips, the fatty tumors on his rib cage and shoulders. The terrible abscess on his jaw he developed in the past week. He's been on meds for a year which stopped the crying (breaks my heart when he cries).

He doesn't get up to greet me when I get home, he just lays there wagging his tail happy to see me...

Going to miss you buddy.

Still have Schatzi, she's 8 and hopefully she'll live as long. No more dogs for now, taking a break...

The Vet is allowing Schatzi to see Tyson once he's passed, they say it gives a dog closure, so they don't wonder what happened to their companion.

:( oh gosh... I'm sorry. So hard. I dread the day when it's my turn to write a post like this. Makes me tear up now just thinking about it. Looks like Tyson had a wonderful life :(

I feel for you. I know you said no more dogs, but the one left behind has been used to a furry companion for its whole life. Think about a middle aged rescue dog. Sme people give up dogs for the stupidest reasons and chances are very good a 6 to 8 year old rotty could be found that your other pup will get along great with.

Sorry to hear. Glad you love them enough to stop the hurt. My friend just had to let go of his Rott, Harley last Friday. She was only 10.
God speed Tyson

A buddy of mine had to put his dog down last summer. For his dogs last meal he cooked up a big New York Steak. I thought that was so cool in a difficult time....

Sorry to hear :( I'm glad you posted the part about Schatzi getting closure. One of mine is 14 now and she's rapidly slowing down. When the time comes I'm going to ask the vet about our other pup being there. I know she'd be confused as to where her sister went otherwise.

RIP Tyson

Sorry to hear of this. You are being a good dog dad and making the right decision. I put my buddy, Loki down last Sept. and he went to sleep in my arms. Wanted to be the last person he saw and touched, figured he would be a lot more at ease that way.

As tough as this is, it is the right thing to do. In the past, we waited a week or so too long, and it didn't benefit anyone.
Remember the good times and at the right time, add a new dog to the mix.
We said we couldn't handle the loss of our last dog and needed to take a break. That lasted a couple of months and we missed the paws.

We went from only puppies and kittens to rescue dogs and cats. We refer to them as used animals. If you do this, you will find that you don't choose them, they choose you.

Currently have 1 dog and 2 cats, both from shelters, dog is a 75 lb shedder, retriever, shepard mix and loves everyone he has ever met.
He is 8 and we will most likely get him a buddy in the next couple of years.
Cats are two brothers 18 and 9 lbs and take no crap from anyone.

Hardest thing I had to do was put my Ol' Boy Guiness down a few years back. This was his final picture smiling back at me at the Vet. Miss that guy so much. Guinness, please help Tyson tomorrow and welcome him up above.:(

Sad to hear. :( Tough decision but it is the right one. We have had to say goodby to two of ours a few years ago. Thought we would not get anymore. Now we have six! All Aussies. I like the idea of your other pup being there, I hae not heard of that ...but it makes sense.

Wow, what kind words, thank you so much.

It's just now starting to sink in. I've been taking photos of my guy for the past few days, just hoping to get the perfect final shot, but the photos i've posted above best describe our life together and that is where the real memories are.

A friend once told me after wrestling around with Tyson and being around him for a weekend:

If I had a dog like this I'd have a dog.

Sorry to hear the news. Four years ago this month, I had to do the same thing for the best golden we have ever had. Tough on us, but the best thing we can do for them is to end their suffering.

Treating an family member with such respect and dignity, doing what's best for them but difficult for us is a great lesson and example for the kids too. It says a lot about who you are as a family leader.

Good luck Baja; RIP Tyson.

Thank you for the compliment.

I acquired both of these dogs when each were two years old at different times.

Tyson belonged to the ex-husband of an old girlfriend. When they split up, he moved to an apartment and left the dog behind. I didn't even like the dog when I met him. He was a dirty dog in an unkept yard. I suggested giving him to our water guy and family in Baja where we have a vacation home. They had a few dogs, starting to get old, and Tyson was only two and would last many years for them.

Something happened as I trucked him down there. The dog fell in love with me, and wouldn't leave my side. We left him with the family, reluctantly, and when I next came down I drove toward the family's home on the way to mine and there he was standing in the road. I passed him by and he came a runnin' and followed me to my place on the Beach. We were both happy to see one another. I met Chris, now my wife the following year, and in time we made plans to marry one year after meeting. She insisted I ask for Tyson back and they knew there was a bond between us so they allowed it. We offered to replace him with another dog but the "water guy" said his children were growing up and would leave home soon and he didn't want another dog to care for.

The rest is history. Tyson made just about every trip to the Beach House with us. He would just hang out, no fence, not tied up, just hang and greet visitors.

Schatzi, was named Harley then and belonged to a Marine going back one more time to Iraq after a divorce. We responded to his add on CraigsList for a two year old Rotty and that he wanted $200 for her. He came to our house, checked us out and our yard and plus Tyson to make sure they got along. He was pleased with his findings and let us know he didn't need any payment, he was just happy to find a good home for her.

Funny, I have never disciplined Tyson once, Schatzi on the other hand? Ten times a day! Still love her!

Andy B., I'm tearing up too, thanks for listening everyone, it really helped...

Parting shot of the "best dog in the whole wide world" It's 3:25 now, he goes in at 5:00

We're back. It wasn't as bad as we thought, and we're at peace with this.

They give him an injection that made him fall asleep within 10 minutes. Then a follow up shot to put him out. He was gone in 30 seconds.

The abscess in his jaw/mouth turned out to be Cancer, he was going to be a goner soon enough so we feel we did the right thing at the right time.

Look, a lot of us don't know one another, but when it comes to family and pets and jobs and weddings and divorces I see how everyone pulls together here. so thanks for letting me let it all out. BTW, Schatzi sniffed Tyson once he passed, she sniffed his mouth, paw where the injection was, rib cage and groin area. She seemed satisfied but we'll never know, but it was a big deal to us.

So dry those eyes, the best dog in the whole wide world has gone to Dog Heaven...

Thanks, Chuck and Chris

That is interesting.

I am sure that had to be one of your not-so-memorable Friday nights. You did the right thing. I'm sure it had to be rough. I have two labs myself and they go everywhere with us, so I definitely understand the bond. Hang in there.

Better a year too early, than a minute too late. RIP
