GM boosts discounts on big pickups as summer truck war heats up

DETROIT -- General Motors more than doubled discounts on some of its large pickups in July’s first 10 days after U.S. sales of the highly profitable models fell last month despite ads attacking the durability of Ford Motor Co.’s aluminum-bodied trucks.

Incentives averaged $7,962 on the Chevrolet Silverado, up 76 percent from June levels, and $9,457 on the GMC Sierra, an increase of 147 percent, according to J.D. Power data obtained by Bloomberg.

Ford offered $4,457 on its F-150 and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles had discounts of $6,172 on its Ram, according to the research firm.

During June, U.S. sales fell 3.7 percent for the Silverado and 7.8 percent for the Sierra, while Ford’s F-series deliveries surged 29 percent. The previous month, GM began running ads showing heavy workloads tearing up the aluminum beds of Ford pickups while only scratching Chevy models.

For the first half of the year, Silverado's U.S. sales fell 1 percent to 273,652 vehicles while Sierra gained 6 percent to 106,466 vehicles. F-series deliveries rose 11 percent to 395,244 units.

Full-size pickups are hotly contested and lucrative market for U.S. automakers, which can make more than $10,000 per vehicle on them. GM is eager to end Ford’s 39-year reign as the leader in sales of those trucks.

“GM had a big promotion in June and it didn’t really move the needle so they sweetened it,” Michelle Krebs, a senior analyst with researcher AutoTrader, said in an interview. “It appears from the sales numbers in June that the truck-bed ad wars did not resonate with consumers in a way that sent them to Chevy and GMC trucks.”

GM spokesman Jim Cain said the company’s incentive numbers rose in early July because it ran a sale that offered 20 percent off sticker prices. He couldn’t immediately confirm the J.D. Power figures, but he didn’t challenge them.

Silverado's U.S. sales fell 1 percent through June to 273,652 vehicles while Sierra gained 6 percent to 106,466 vehicles. Ford F-series deliveries rose 11 percent to 395,244 units.

I love the 2016 2500hd ltz. I got 20.6 mpg going to Havasu in my new truck doing 85. [emoji1303][emoji1303] The dodge just doesn't do it for me. 3 buddy's just switched to dodge from Chevy and 1 regrets it.

They fragment their sales with their GMC brand...GM in general has too many dealers.
If we assume those GMC buyers would all buy Chebbies, then it would be a different story, methinks :thumbsup

Totally. GM typically outsells Ford in total sales in most of those 39 years. They did up to 2009, and finally surpassed Ford again last year.

Anyone know what the definition of insanity is??

:rolleyes :eek :D

GM truck sales have outsold Ford trucks for decades. If GM really gave a shit about taking that sales crown they would discontinue the GMC line so all GM trucks were Chevy.

Chevy/GM could care less about trophies. It's a stockholders game and if GM is profitable for the stockholders then GM stays.

Slight but significant differences in the clientele between GM and bow tie buyers. You close GM and it doesn't mean those are automatic bow tie buyers. Many GM owners want nothing to do with bow tie service.

GM buyers is what independents are in the political world lol

Looks like your "c" key isn't working on your devise. GMC sales are about 20% of Chevy truck sales, been that way for 4 decades. If GM were to discontinue the GMC line, they would just add another trim level. GMC is a gimmick. The trucks were made on the same assembly line for decades. Lately they have tried harder to differentiate them, but the basic structure is the same, just grill / front end treatment and minor interior differences are the best they can come up with.

I worked at a GMC dealer right out of HS in 1989, used to see GMC's with Chevy badged tailgates all the time. There really isn't any reason for GMC to exist other than dealer relationships. GM has kicked Fords ass in trucks sales for decades but technically they haven't because of the split (GMC) divisions. Even Ford fans can do the basic math and add the two numbers together and see who sells more trucks each year, but the media doesn't seem capable.

We have a Chevy and GMC dealer within a mile of each other here in the high desert. Every experience I've had at the Chevy dealer was a complete clusterfuck and aggravating as hell, when I bought my 2015 GMC it was a 45 minute deal. As I was leaning on the door frame in the sales managers office, here's how it went:

SM : how much do you want for your truck?

Me : high blue book, 33k
SM : is it clean?
Me: it's perfect, 82000 miles. (2008 2500HD Dmax)
SM: ok, sounds good. Your new truck stickers at 63, how about 57?
Me: sounds good to me, here's the keys.
SM: okay, deal is done. Go see finance and congratulations on your new truck.

Sounds like when I bought my Chevy from Jay Photoglou. Except it was done over the phone. Lol

Your missing the point. Nobody is disputing the Chevy/GM versus Ford thing. We both agree on the numbers lol. We also both agree on the platform of the GM/Chevy vehicle brands being identical.

I can't explain to you why GM exists if you're blinded by product loyalty. You're focused on Utilization rather than the ROI over the life of that vehicle.

Again, there are slight but significant differences between GM and bow tie buyers. Not only does the trim level differ between the products but so does the value added experience over the life of the customer owning the vehicle. It's perceived value which differentiates themselves from each other.

That has been my experience as well. My buddy just bought a GM truck and he's loyal based on the experience first and price second. He still got a competitive price, not the cheapest but fair, and the level of personalized service was elevated. He's not likely to go back to a bow tie dealer if he can help it.

The prices of new trucks are so crazy, even with $10k savings my new one if I choose will still cost way too much. I'm holding my cards for now. My Tahoe has been sitting a lot (it takes a year to get 5k miles), it deserves a break tho, with 205k miles it still looks and runs great. My son picked up a year old truck recently for a pretty good price tho.
