I shot a video of the river today and the final size is 3 gigs, how do I compress this so I can upload to YouTube or Vimeo?

Ps. I am using a Mac.

Youtube will compress it for you, it will probably take longer for your computer to resize and re-encode the video, than it would to just upload the 3 gigs to youtube. you just need to cut it into 10 minute segments first, i think the program i used is called Aone video splitter.

Also if you upload it in full quality to youtube first it will be available for viewing in HD on youtube at 720p

I tried that a one video splitter deal. It crashed my computer. Had to do a bunch of crap to get it running again.

On a newer PC you can use Windows Moviemaker, built into XP I think. It will give you choices on your frame size and frames per second as you choose smaller and smaller file sizes. Its no Apple though. Gets chopping the quality falls off badly.

Movie maker on my Vista sytem doesn't handle the MP4 format that is recorded on the Go Pro hd.

You want a video splitter not a re-encoder, a splitter will simply cut the video into specified size segments, it does it very rapidly. A re-encoder has to go through the entire video and redraw every frame of video, re-encoding it using a different format, or the same format with a different quality, it takes a long time to do.

http://www.videosplitterformac.com/mp4-splitter-for-mac.html

Quicktime Pro (the pay version) will do it as well, there is an option in the menu called 'extract'

QuickTime can do this if you have Pro. Choose Window » Movie Properties, select a track and click 'Extract' to create a new QT document with only your track. Now you can File » Save it to a QT .mov container, or use File » Export to create an MP4 container.

For MP4, select 'Movie to MPEG-4' from the 'Export:' drop-down, and click 'Options…'. Set video/audio format to 'Pass-through' (assuming you have video or audio tracks that are in the MPEG-4 standard). You may need to set the 'File Format:' drop-down to just 'MP4'.

#2 for Quick Time pro. It's actually an excellent program especially for the price and with with a GoPro alone I would recommend purchasing QT pro just for viewing and some basic contrast/sharpness changes you can make (especially for a guy who might be slapping the thing inside his plane and needs a little better composition). FYI, the suction cup mount works just dandy on the outside at 155 mph....of uh....plane...yeah, a plane.

Thanks Roger! This video is from the top of the plane, the video is of the Parker strip from take off to the dam and back to the airport. The suction cup seemed to work well as I still have Dave's Go-Pro intact and in hand. :D

Ps. Dave, there were no other video's on your camera, maybe you do need a 5th grader.

Nevermind I got it to work. Had to uninstall and reinstall quicktime. I fucking hate computers!!!!!

quicktime is kinda shitty on windows, try VLC player, or media player classic, the FFDShow codec for windows will allow windows media player to play the go pro's mp4 files as well :thumbsup

Ok so Quicktime is working for me now and seems pretty simple to splice a clip out of a video to load. Before I go digging into the help section can someone tell me what else I can do with Quicktime? Can I add clips together or add music or anything?

QT will pretty much just convert the entire file. I haven't screwed with it in years but, yeah....pretty basic. I have some software you could dick around with if you'd like. I you can find any software that works better with a pooped out old computer your mattress is freeeeeeee!!!!!

Brandin.....You recommend I spend $3k on a MT kit and you're not willing to throw down less than $1k for some produce? Balance Danielson!

lol....

I have about a million other things that I could use more at this time. I didn't say I wasn't going to blow some kind of cash on retarded unneeded items but I can still be quasi cool with the flip;):D

This loan mod goes through and I need to be ready for obamas cash for appliaances deal;):skull

Quicktime should handle it for you...

If not, I use DMV Converter (free). Will convert mp4 to wmv, avi, etc.
Default is 320x240, but you can set a custom size.

Pro worked fine only one problem, the movie was too long and got booted from U-Tube, I'll try it again later. :D

Yea...BIG files are a no-no...:bash:

Cut it up into smaller segments...30k files breeze right through...

This is going to take some practice, This Mac is so F-N slow! do you know a way to clean a mac? Over time it has slowed down and I don't know what is causing it. It's an original G-5 Imac with 2 gigs of ram.

Awesome vids Wheeler! Thanks for going through the trouble.

I use Handbrake for compressing / resizing. It was built for Macs but I use it on a PC. I found that 64 bit processors / operating systems work much faster (~10 X).

Good luck & thanks again!

Wheelie, do you have the system disk for that G5? You may need to clean up the closet a little bit.

Yes I do, can I install the disk without re-setting or losing all my junk? I still have about 50 gigs of space left on the HD, this is a 1.8 ghz processor with 2gb DDR SDRAM.

Big video files do take serious time and resources. I'll take some videos and create a DVD for them....can take 2+ hours to process....:bash:

Youtube actually has no limit on file size, your segments just have be shorter than 10 minutes :thumbsup

Although uploading a 10 minute HD video may take a bit. It took about 25 minutes to upload my 2 minute videos but then it took about another 30-40 minutes to reach full quality. And I have a pretty decent internet connection too.

Do it at night :thumbsup, they also have a mass uploader that you can queue up a bunch of files and it will upload them one after another automatically.

Yeah. You can basically do a system check. If it doesn't check out you have the ability to clean it up without re-installing.

I just now remembered I have a disk stuck in the slot loader, it's the disk I got from RD of the Sundance.

I normally would start taking things apart now that I have a reason, since the Pc. is dead I don't want to break this computer and be without.
