Really thinking about picking up that Sierra 2500. Wife didn’t say yea but she didn’t say no... that was step 1. It’s right there a little over budget but close enough to beg for forgiveness. Now the next thing I’m looking at is service. Where would I take it? IE or somewhere near Buena Park. That’s what made dodge so appealing, I have the dealer in norco right by the house and priemere in Buena Park next door to the training center. I take the suburban to selman but that never really goes well for me. Kind of a dumb thread I guess but like I said it’s something I’m putting some thought into right now.

Why do you need/want a 2500? Do you need a diesel to tow heavy? If it's just your boat....you don't need a 3/4 ton.

Domestic brand service is mostly shit....If you don't need a 2500, go buy a Tundra.

A: It won't break
B: The dealers are nice because they don't spend their entire day dealing with pissed off customers who's $90K truck is falling apart in 4 months.

Plan on getting a 5th wheel eventually and the horse trailer eventually.

No shit since 2003 I’ve been taking my 2500HD there for repairs. I added up my repairs to date last year and I’ve spent more than half of what I paid for the truck. Makes me sick. Fortunately I had a company truck for the first 10 years so I probably saved a third of potential repairs. It only left me stranded on the side of the road twice. I never really towed heavy just a enclosed trailer and 26 cat. Looking back maybe a yota would have been a better decision.

I use Diesel Tune in Downey which isn’t far from Buena Park. Independent shop that works on all diesels and have had much better luck there then any dealer.

I take my truck to All Time in Glendora, I prefer them to Domestic Diesel in Chino. Both places are expensive, but I’d rather have either of these guys working on my truck than a corporate dealership.

OK, What type of horse trailer are you going to get? How far down the pipe are you looking to get a 5er? A 2 horse straight with a manger and a tack box isn't heavy, unless you have a pair of draft horses. Same with a slant. Only gets to be a bitch with 3 horse slants and larger. Buying a truck for a 5er you may get, is like paying a model to sit next to you. Sure, looks great, but throwing away money like a stripper.

There will be a lot of stuff on the market when the rest of the folks go back to work. Just a thought...and horses, tack and feed are pricey too.

Plan is to get 3 horses, so I figure a 3 horse slant. Toy hauler, don’t know. Kind of like a domino effect type deal. I haven’t really looked too hard at anything because I don’t have the truck to pull it.i wasn’t really in a hurry to get a truck either, but it seems like a nice truck for a good price.

I'd assume you have a truck already...If you don't have horses yet, or a trailer for the horses you don't have yet...buying a truck seems like the cart before the horse 🤔 If you run into a deal on a 3/4 horse slant living quarters, you may be kicking yourself wishing you had a 1ton (or an F150...some guys here think they're the end all, be all🤣) Don't buy because "It's a good deal", sounds like my wife "I had to, it was on sale". Don't get me wrong, I love watching others spend money. That stuff keeps the world going round. Just saying don't rush...the stuff's all real pricey, and stacks up quick!

I see it the other way around. I don’t really want to buy the horses or a trailer till I buy the truck. Kind of like River Dave said when he was looking at trailers. Can’t tow any of them so why look. My truck is on its way out. Seems like every month I’m dumping 1000 dollars into it and it’s getting expensive. It’s an 02 1500 HD with around 260k

Our 2020 DMax with 5K miles is currently being lemon lawed.
The Particulate filter systems clog faster than they can regenerate. They lock up and have to be replaced again and again. Two to Three week repair.

Chronic problem with those that tow long distances.
Sets up cylinder wall glazing and exhaust valve seat damage for several other but related reasons. Chain reaction.
Dealer svc depts are catching hell from customers so they don't want to see you and will try and shut you out.

GM is way behind the 8 ball on this issue. Dizzy and stupid and out of touch.
The mini Dmax is experiencing serious issues too.

If you're going gas and not towing heavy get a Tundra. Yeah the Toyota is dated but it's as reliable as a hammer. It's de-fucked. Toyota dealers are as big a dicks as the other makes but at least the trucks are good.

Has Toyota fixed the oil leak issues they were having on tundra pick ups? I have considered them but that’s the only thing that scares me not as pricey to fix as a diesel fuel system but it’s not cheap either.

Do yourself a favor. If you’re going to tow horse trailers and get a 5th wheel, get a 3500 dually 4x4. Way more stability when towing and lot safer too.

here is my take on it..
yes its my gmc truck that im selling.. the woman dont want me to sell it..
we have a 05 chevy 3/4 suburban(unicorn) that stays with boat and tows it. it does real good towing but sucks gas down quick..
we have a escalade to tow other stuff around town.. if i need 3/4 diesel i can use the one i sold to my buddy/neighbor

i had 1/2 ton truck to tow. i did upgraded brakes ,airbags, trans cooler, radiator, then when towing up a long up hill grade on hot summer day at 35/38 mph.
sometimes it would still got hot and have to shut a/c off..
so i sold it and bought a 3/4ton diesel it was night and day difference. just went up the hill towing like nothing..
after 5/6 years sold that truck thinking i dont need 3/4 diesel and bought half ton gasser cause boats stays in havasu..
the one time i had to tow boat long distance i was like wtf was i thinking.. sold it and went back to 3/4 ton diesel .
the one time you have a loaded truck gear, family and what ever heavy weight towing you will understand.. plus going down hill with engine exhaust brake option makes it even nicer..
im not bias cause its my truck. it will sell no problem when i put it on other automotive websites..
please buy what fits your needs and or budget..

do your own services its real easy on a lifted truck.. biggest thing is always doing it before its due. change air filter and oil and both oil/fuel filters..

It's beyond me why someone would 'upgrade' (spend $15-20k) to something they really need a couple of times /yr.

That’s terrible. I have the same drivetrain you too but not the dually. Haven’t had one issue in 17,300 miles and 3,500 of that has been towing the boat.

With the newer diesels, there have been lots of issues with regens and dpf clogging. My friend is trying to get Dodge to buy his 2020 Cummins back. From what I've personally seen, trucks that don't see highway speeds or loads are the ones with issues. Guys using them as commuters, sitting in traffic or surface street stop&go, and service trucks with PTO driven equipment, light load with long run times.

Sucks that this shit is going on. I’m getting close to getting something new but this is a turn off. I’ve always been Chevy/GM guy but thinking it’s time to jump ship. Good call on lemon law, I can see shit happening later down the road that stems from your original issues.

You can take it to any GM dealer for service. We take our GMCs to our local Chevy dealer. They've been great.

bought all my GMC’s from Rod.

service is always good, never had an issue.
I used to live two houses away from Rod. Good guy, but we will never buy another GM product. Tried to get warranty items fixed at 5 different dealerships, before going to State arbitration. All the I.E. dealers can kiss my ass.
Buy a Dodge.

What's the best guess on trailer weight?

didn’t know they had issues...that engine is 13 years old now...so I imagine any issues are fixed.

here is an example of Toyota level service....I bought a 2003 4runner in 2017 or so...the dashboard was fucked up. Toyota knew about a material defect and had a service campaign to fix it. No charge, they replaced the dashboard in my 200K 15 year old 4runner that I just bought for $1500.

there is no way in hell a domestic manufacturer would consider doing such a thing.

Don’t get me wrong I wasn’t hating on Toyota, but I do have a friend who’s 2012 had a pretty good oil leak on the back of the head I think from the cam seals or something I’m not sure anyway long story short I think it was $4000 plus to fix it at Toyota dealer he took it to an independent did it for half, he wrote emails back-and-forth several times with Toyota and they basically told him to pound sand so it doesn’t always work.

I do the same. They always have as great coupons for oil/fluid changes and whatnot on their website.

Kind of like buying a boat. What do you do those few times a year?

If you're comparing the two, you should buy the truck you want.
The boats that everyone on this site has/talks about are a luxury purchase.....no justification required.

This. If your looking at 5’ers in the future, Dually is the way to go. No matter how capable the SRW trucks are on paper, they’re still riding on a single rear tire per side and there new Toy haulers are HEAVY as shit with pin weight

This.
The stability from a cross wind is so much better. Even on a 25 year, I mean 43 year old dually.
