My sil has a 2010 Cameron ss L99. She can't get it to pass smog due to a egr code that won't clear. She bought the car used and it's got some bolt on stuff. Her fiance says it does not have a egr valve on the car? He said they did not come factory equipped with egr on the L 99. Sounds like the previous owner modified it and now she can't get it to pass smog. Any advise I would appreciate

Need an LS guru, but I thought the later motors...at least past the 06 trucks, did not have the egr? Maybe it's a federal emissions or Cali thing?

If it was an egr setup, it would probably have an empty plug hanging off the harness at the passenger front of the motor. The non-smog headers don't have the "port" for an egr. If that is the case, it would have a freeze plug or the like in the manifold behind the throttle body...poor man's delete.

Thanks. She works really hard and likes her little hot rod.

She is not getting a code, no check engine light. She said apparently the egr is built into the vvt. No code for the vvt. Possibly the car was tuned and needs an update?

If sold in California, the seller is responsible for smogging it.
She's had it a couple years and she is tired of "jumping through hoops 🫣" I used to know a guy kinda thing. Now I'm just trying to get it resolved.

EGR has nothing to do with VVT.

That car does not have EGR, EGR went away back in 1999-2000.

Post the code. If possible, post what the "modifications" are that the car has. Or a photo of engine compartment will tell alot....

The variable valve timing replaces the function of the egr in how it times the valve openings with the cams.

The "egr" drive cycle not setting is usually the reason for smog failure.

I have had good luck clearing that code on STOCK non modified cars by driving it like nascar. Not like granny.

The issue isnt a trouble code, but there is an IM monitor that is not reporting "ready" to the smog machine. Need to have a scanner hooked up and see exactly which one it is - the description on the smog test paper is generic.

Does it have headers or a cold air intake on it?
It has both headers and cold air intake

Am I reading that correctly, evap has not completed as well?

She bought the car this way? Has she had to smog it before? If so, did it pass?

Is it tuned?

Has there been any recent repairs or work done that would require a code clear? If so, it may be that it needs more drive cycle.

That car doesnt have egr. Vvt takes care of that but they are grouped in the smog report.

Evap monitor is the only one that is allowed to be incomplete...all the others have to run though.

True, I was just thinking it's not a single monitor that wont run, hence a couple of my questions

what I would do…

Buy a subscription to AlldataDiY for a month for $30. Get a scanner and look up the actual incomplete monitors. Then go into Alldata and look up the drive cycle to run that monitor….and perform it.

As has been mentioned, with VVT, the cam timing can be changed by the PCM to increase reversion and perform the function that previously required an EGR valve….if this thing has been tuned to lock out the VVT or change the VVT strategy, then that monitor won’t run.

You won’t know though until you make sure all conditions are met and perform the drive cycle.

i posted about a not-ready condition for my 2015 Silverado a while back.

I was able to get all monitors up and running in about 20 mins by following these instructions:

That guy is a moron. You can’t get in any trouble for disconnecting your battery and you can’t get through a smog check without having all the monitors (except evap) run. That said GM cars can take forever to run the cat monitor.

The 4.3L is a notable example
