I have been looking at trucks and I like the idea of having the Multi-flex tailgate but several trucks I have looked at only have the power assist tailgate. Any one have any negative aspects to the Multi-flex or selling points to the power assist GM tailgate? My main concern with the power assist is the long term reliability may be questionable but the Multi-flex may have similar issues.

BTW and FYI:
Right now their is a GM recall and a month ago I went by the dealer and they disconnected the open/lowering switch on the tailgate itself. App, key FOB and dash switch still releases it.
I was backing the TH up, when I put the truck in N or P the tailgate dropped. Common issue and good thing I,,, errr,,, ahhhhh the wife noticed it.

Also, if you order it with the Kicker sound system in the tailgate, it may interfere with the Bluetooth in the truck itself. I mentioned that to the service writer and got a thousand thanks,, they were baffled when customers came in with the issue. Seems simple,, but some stuff is confusing.

Is the recall just on the multi-flex?

I bought my 2024 Silverado last November, I contemplated the multi flex, but didn't get it.
I'm impatient, I would never take the time to fold that thing out just to jump in my truck bed to get something out.

Any regrets on your choice?

I bought a 2024 Sierra with the standard tailgate, I think the multi pro tailgate looks a lot better. I have the power assist tailgate opener on the key fob, that’s a nice feature, works great.

Only downside to the multi-pro tailgate is if you forget your receiver in, and you open both parts of your tailgate and damage your tailgate.

Power up on the regular tailgate seems nice on the other one, but the tailgates aren’t that heavy 🤷‍♂️

These tailgates actually have their own electronic control module .

Multi-pro seems like a waste IMO. Cant see the benefits outweighing the potential to destroy it with always having a hitch in. I’ve heard of friends/kids opening without the owner there and pressing the wrong button, hitting the hitch.

All GM’s have the bumpers steps, which work as well or better than the step on the tailgate in my opinion. I also think the Ford tailgate step thing is stupid but I know a few people that use them all the time. Maybe I’m just weird.

Hey GM, how about you re-direct some of those engineering resources toward lifters and transmissions/torque converters…you know, actual problems that need actual solutions
They did, see my earlier post 🤣

I always thought the Ford tailgate steps were lame, but since I got my Raptor that came with the step in the tailgate, I use it all the time, especially since my knee doesn’t like bending like it used to. The GM tailgate on the other hand is innovative, it just seems to be more expensive electrical crap to go wrong.

I want the Ram 60/40 swing out tailgate, without the Ram. It would be great to get into the bed without reaching.

So for those of you with the mult-flex tailgate, you can override the drop that would damage the tailgate when a hitch is in place.

There is a kit you can buy that does it.

However I thought this was an issue with the early models that had the multi-flex tailgate and that GM would have done something about it themselves. Sounds like they didn’t.

Have a multi flex on my 3500 at4. Never liked them but wife wanted it and now i love it lol. No issues with mine randomly opening and no recall notices for me. Gm a few years ago added the feature to lock out the top half so it doesnt hit a hitch by accident. With the key near the tailgate you hold the top button for 7 ish seconds and the taillights will flash and then your good.

Also bw makes adjustable flip hitches just for the multi flex tailgates so they dont hit.

I like to lower mine and drop the top section when hooking up my gooseneck latch and chains. I can easily stand there and reach everything.

More than that, my F250 has as previously noted the step that comes out of the tailgate and even a rod you could use to stabilize yourself if you’re carrying the load up the step at the same time

Since all 250s are four-wheel-drive it’s a little high off the ground and it’s very helpful. Probably one of the best inventions and a motorized tailgate in my opinion.

Exactly what I was going to post. My Dad's Denali HD has the multi-flex tailgate and it is awesome! VERY handy for him as he ages. Also makes getting dirt bikes in and out FAR easier too.

BTW, the 1/2 ton stow& tow and the 3/4-1 ton have different draw bar styles (you can see on the website above that the 2" shank model is different).

The new DEI engineers are getting right on that issue.

Probably the same ones that jumped on those cam phaser issues with the Oval oh-so-quickly.
You are probably correct. The low talent hiring push started under Jac Nassar. Played a roll in my retiring before I had to. Couldn't stomach watching what was going on. 🥵

Thanks for all the responses. My general consensus is that if I can find a truck with the multi-flex that would be my preference but it isn’t a dealer breaker.

When you're muscle fucking cargo the step is nice. My knees are blown out.

The tailgate installed Kicker sound system sounded like when you're at the pharmacy and an employee put a cheap-O radio to the stores PA system mic and the store music sounds it's playing thru a tin can.
$1.000, we skipped it this time around.

Just recently bought a new Silverado. I really wanted the multi flex tailgate, and they are cheap compared to what Ford charges for theirs, and can be ordered for any trim, unlike Ford. But I could not find one on the model & trims I was looking at. The dealers had some on higher trims, and even had one or two on the work truck line. I considered ordering a truck, but I could not get any sort of accurate time line. I got 6-8 weeks, or 6-8 months. Ultimately I bought the 1500 RST /Z71 and got a really good deal with the GM rebate, Costco rebate and it was a “Managers Special”, so the dealer was taking money off the price of the truck too. It helped make my decision between the Ford & Chevy much easier as Ford is not offering any sort of discounts, and I still had two months left to get a XPlan PIN number.

A few things I’m not impressed with, but they’re not that big of a deal, well sort of! The driver passenger seats are a little too firm for my liking. Back seats are great. The Ford seats are definitely more plush. Since I did not get the full drivers assist system I don’t have beeper sensors on the back bumper? Pretty lame! Camera has the lines, just no audio warnings. And lastly I just found out that as of model year 2022.5 GM change to a new electronics system in these trucks called Global B. Apparently this system is pretty locked down and no one makes a tuner or programmer for Global B that allows simple tire size adjustments in the computer. So if you increase the factory tires, unlike the Ford you can’t buy a programmer to correct the speedometer, or nor will the dealer go in and adjust the tire size for you. Government Motors at its finest!

But right now with the 5.3 and 10 Speed I’ve seen an average fuel milage of 20 to 21.7 mpg. I’m pretty happy about that.

I put this on my multi pro tailgate after I learned the hard way within a week of owning my truck.

I was able to get the dent out (paintless removal) and put this on so it doesn't happen again. I also enabled the multi pro lock out so no one accidently does it.

Have you seen the flood lights that are available for those spots? Look like they would be pretty cool and could be some really useful light for a lot of different situations.

Am I the only one that feel these multi-swing / multi-fold tail gates look like a fucking nightmare for long term ownership?

If they're truly a good tailgate, somebody will write a country song about it. Still waiting.....

No.
But for most of the RDP Ballers it will be the next owners problem.

I've bought 2 Silverados now with the fancy tailgate. Dropped it on the hitch on both. Only taken a bit of paint off. The problem is when the tailgate is down, you can't see the hitch, you have to remember it is on there or not.

The step works great and is really sturdy compared to our last Ford where I always had a fear of catching my foot/leg on the wrong side of the step and busting my ankle. I saw that happen to another dad at a Boy Shout campout. Broke his leg right while unloading his troop's stuff.

Nothing wrong with a normal tailgate, but damn we are getting older! Getting into that bed is not as easy or graceful as it once was. 😂

Nothing, if you don't ever get in and out of the truck bed. I currently have three trucks, two of them are service beds, one of them is a Ford with the step and grab handle. At 52, pulling yourself up from the ladder rack to get in the bed and then trying to let yourself down is getting really old. I love my Ford step and grab handle. It's literally like walking up and down a flight of stairs.

Has everyone gotten so lazy that we need the tailgate to close by itself? 🤦‍♂️ what happens when you have to much in the bed and have to SLAM it shut, I know most of us have been there. FFS there are more important things to be lazy about then shutting a damn tailgate🤣🤣

I think it comes in handy once in a while. If I swung a hammer for a living. I’m sure I’d use it a lot more often.

You have to time it just right or it will reopen. Just as it's about to close all the way. Jam it shut by hand. If you jam it shut without hitting the button and letting it get close. It will drive you nuts with the tailgate open alarm.

Funny story my river neighbor got 1. He would lift the tailgate a little and then it closes automatically. He had no clue there was a button to push. There is a button on the dash as well. But no button on the dash to close it.

I have 2 regular tail gates and I see no benefits to the powered one. Would rather it not be. As a few times I have had to pull over and hit open and then close to get that stupid alarm to stop.
