Looking at a 2007 1500 4x2 crew with a 4.8 for a work truck. Are these motors any good? I won't be towing anything. Mileage?

Thanks

We have the 4.8 in our Yukon its pretty much the same as the 5.3 but minus a few horses. Its plenty strong for that truck with light towing and i think millage is rated at one ore two MPG. better than the 5.3

The 4.8 is as good as the standard small block Chevy V8 minus 2 cylinders. It should give you a long life and decent milage. I was considering putting a 4.8 in my 46' Willeys project, but I'm gonna keep it old school with a standard 4 cyl.

My 4.8 has been solid except for the water pump gasket going bad at around 50k, but that is still 6 years after I purchased it. Mine is an 01 with 58k miles on it.

Go with the 5.3 !!!! the 4.8 will be a big factor when it comes to resale...!! my budy had one, he immediately started beefing up the motor due to the lack of power....

I've got a Cummins Dodge for pulling power. This is a run-around truck.

Thanks for all the replies.

My neighbor owns 5 of those trucks for his cabinet business. He says they are fine for work trucks. Gas mileage is about the same as a 5.3L. He's never had a problem with any of them. He bought them to replace his other fleet of trucks and is happy with them. Plus it was a little cheaper than the 5.3L's, not much but enough to make the big purchase a little better on his wallet.

Let me put it this way. My uncle has a 2000 Sierra work truck with the 4.8 He just got a new one cause his truck had OVER 200,000 in the original engine. They had to replace the tranny at around 130,000 miles other than that the ONLY things they ever had to replace or work on was the water pump and the fuel pump. Yeah, Id say its a good motor. Like you said you arent using it to pull anything so yes go with the 4.8, its a GREAT motor!

What rear end does it have?? I would want a 4.10 rear end....other wise I would think the performance would suck on a crew cab.

Mine has the 4.8 with 373 gears...Its no drag racer but it is far from a slug.....I think the 410 gears may bring your fwy milage down a bit...At any rate its a stock small block commuter car...Not inteded for pulling weight or drag racing....

I have a 2008 Chevrolet 4 Door truck with the small engine and love it. It is getting about 21 on the way to the lake. I have the 373 gears and it is pretty quick for a big vehicle.

I have an '01 ex cab with the 4.8. I bought it new in '00, 153,xxx on it. 3.73 rear end. I towed my 22' Howard with it until last summer from so cal since i bought the boat in '01. it just didn't have the power anymore and started to heat up a tad. I have only put a battery and two fog light bulbs in it, no B.S. it is crazy the truck starts and runs like it did when i bought it except for towing. @ 150k i put plugs and wires, belts, fuel filter and changed the radiator fluid all for the first time. oil changed every 3k @ the dealer. My wife wants me to get a new truck but i want to see how long this focking thing will go. LMOA! it still looks good too. My next one will be the same thing and it will probably be a god dam lemon! :smackhead

2000 Silverado xtra cab w. 112,000, no problems, did replace water pump. Not the best at towing at this point, but don't have to tow far...

8dayz, did it run much better after the tune up? I either need a fuel pump for a tune up.... Tough to start at times. Seems to run okay after that. Just not as much power as before....

Sounds good to me.....a 3.73 rear end probably is good if you are not towing.

I don't know the conversions from metric to inches...what is a 4.8 litre in inches?? The Chevy 350 cubic inch and 300 or 305 cubic inch where two of the best engines ever built. I had a 1988 Chevy 1/2 ton short bed regular cab that was the most reliable truck I ever had...it was a 350 and went 280K miles without a problem.

I sold it to a buddy and he has over 300k now and it is still running like a new truck....doesn't leak or burn a drop of oil, and it's a hot rod to drive.

Those Chevy small blocks are great engines!!

I read that the same way,i have 110,000 miles on that motor with a 6" lift and 35`s and no gear change and it will still break loose on dry pavement in a 2001 Silverado,Grew up around muscle cars and understand what torque is so i`m quite happy with what the little bastard can do

allow me to point out the obvious,if you buy a truck to pull 10,000lbs and its rated for 7,500 who is the bad guy?I have the 4.8 and have been hauling two boats and a camper for some years without a glitch but i dont do it for a living it`s just a toy hauler and in that respect its been flawless

When they are hard to start you almost always need a fuel pump. Those motors need 40psi to start. The filter could be bad too.

8dayz, I can't believe you never changed the fuel pump on yours. Ours has 70k and it's hard to start again. Ready for another fuel pump.

These are in the tank?

I am looking at an 06 ext cab short box right now with 26K miles for $17k. I have a 2500 HD that is getting parked so I am looking at gas mileage and it sounds like this little engine may do well. All 293 cu inches of it. :D

They're all in the tank. The gas keeps the pump cool. They really arent too bad to change. As long as you dont have much gas in it at all then it wont be a problem to do. A little bit of a pain in the ass cause it is a bit more work but its not bad at all.

I have a 02 Yukon and an 04 2500HD gas truck. Thinking the Yukon is nearing as it's really getting loud.

Thanks.

All of the GM LS series (4.8,5.3,5.7,6.0,6.2,7.0)L motors are great motors. The 4.8 and 5.3`s get great fuel mileage while having good power. The 6.0`s have more power but the fuel economy drops a bit comp to the 4.8/5.3....unless you swap it into a lighter car.:D:

The only thing this series of motors is really known for is
1. Piston slap, usually on cold start, but this has never really been a problem, more of an annoyance.
2. The early 1999-00 6.0L iron head truck motors had some problems with cracks in the heads.
3. Some of the early 1997-00 motors had problems with the oil pump not producing enough pressure as it aged.

Other than that not much that comes to mind......

Except to run 89 or 93 octane fuel......yes it will run just fine on 87 and you won`t have any problems......but if you run 89 octane or better the fuel mileage increase should cover the added cost difference. So far everyone that I know who has tried running the better fuel has seen an increase in mileage. Usually 2-3 MPG.
