We took our first trip out to Glamis last weekend and wow, had a great time. We camped over on Pad 4 off Gecko Road with some friends. We are in a camping club and usually go out to the dirt in the winter months but decided to go with another group of friends this time to Glamis and try out the sand. Now I know why so many of you love the place. My boys have been learning to ride their quad this past year and made night/day improvements this trip. Having a track already set up for them to ride made the learning process so much easier. Normally they ride their quad for maybe 20 minutes on a weekend trip. This past weekend in they would ride till their thumb was sore, take a break and then go back to riding again. Now Crystal is telling me that we need to get a 2nd quad so they can both ride at the same time.

Also went on a few runs in friends sandrails. Unbelievable. One rail was 14 years old with a Northstar V8 and looked brand new. Doing wheelies was unbelievably fun. I got pulled over driving my golf cart on Gecko Road by a Ranger down by Pad 3. He wasn't too happy with me. Questioned me up and down about the cart being street legal. Then noted that I didn't have a front windshield and sent me back to camp.

Only downer of the weekend was having to go back home. We will definitely be making more trips out there. Its worth the extra hour drive. I have major toy envy now too.

We gave the place up 10 years ago when the closures happened. I miss it.

All my group had converted to high dollar buggies and I wanted to invest in Jeeping...at the time.

You were lucky that it wasnt a holiday weekend or that golf cart would prob be in the impound yard.Seriously rangers dont use discretion they are believers in ZERO tolerance.

They love to find the smallest thing to stop you then go from there til they find something bigger.I go out of my way to avoid them stay away from the hill or drags has been working well.

We went over New Years and had a blast. Although it seemed like the rangers and BLM where everywhere and constantly patrolling Gecko. I really enjoy Glamis and don't mind the drive but I am more of a fan of the off weeks without all the yahoos...

Why does something need to be street legal if it's being driven offroad?

Off duty or retired LEOs in many cases don't get along with the BLM Rangers at all that we've experienced.
It gets real ugly real quick when the Rangers come around.
No love at all between the CHP and the BLM Rangers.
Just a few words and in a mili-second it all goes sideways and backs into hell.

Gecko is the road into Glamis. Same laws apply as would a residential street. If he was on the dirt he wouldn't have been stopped.

We haven't been since New Years 07/08👎

In part because of finances, and these days a lack of interest..mostly because of the crap that goes on there.
I sure miss the way Glamis used to be.To a point I feel sorry for those who didn't get to experience what it used to be,or what a breakfast pizza is.;)

I am sure you and I have been sitting next to each other, somewhere out there.

We used to stay at Pad 3, Keyhole or 4, Our Saturday run was a banzai run to Pair-A-Dice for Breakfast Burros at 7 am, gas into water bottles, across the 8 into Buttercup, ride into Mexico to dunes end, back across and into Gordons, Up behind gordons all the way through to the wall, then across to Ted Kiff (fuel challenged) to Jeanie's (Boardmanville) for gas and beer and something to eat (scary) then to Olds till about 5, then to the drags (we would not run because Jeanie's pre mix was scary), then to camp.

Over and Over. Best times ever. 8 of us used to make it from pad 4 to Pair-A-Dice in 16 min. all on Banshee's built to the hilt. Tried to break that time over and over but it's just as fast as everything would go.

No way I was affording a 75k buggy and a 10k trailer. :( The CBD just made it easy for us to quit it.

pad 4 to Pair-A-Dice in 16 min??? Nice we would always go there at a basic speed but come back thinking it was the Baja 1000! Great times.

It's just at 17 Miles. With a normal group it was nearly an hour. All our banshees were capable of 80 mph. but 60 was blistering fast if you ask me.

The beer buzz back could be faster, who remembers, :D

Again very back of Roadrunner and that sand highway is very fast.

I spent more money on Banshee's than any boat...ever.

If you pass by a blm ranger and they aint busy your chances of being stopped increase big time! They love to stop golf carts cause most aint registered for street or off road.

If its a street legal then it better be current and legal 100 percent(seat belts, lights, etc) wheter its driven only on the sand or the road including a licensed driver. If off road then those rules apply if street then you have to abide by the rules of street vehicles wheter its on the street or sand.

I've made it to the 8 and back from gecko, stopped at the wall on the way back. How the hell did you make all those stops with just extra water bottles for fuel on built banshees ? I went thru a couple small water bottles and a cranberry juice bottle with a trx 250r. That was just there and back to camp .

No beer in the 6 pack rack and 10 or so water bottles in your back-pack. We used the water bottles so they could be thrown away at Boardmanville. Many times we didnt make it but someone always did and brought fuel back.

Banshees are not horrible at speed but dune-ing they plow through fuel. I was flat side Kehin converted and ran a 370 long rod making 68 hp at the wheels. Trinity baby. I know that sounds very mellow but this was the fucking 90's. That was amazing high dollar power.

We had a guy in the group that ran alcohol but had to ride a 400ex duning LMAO.

I had a CR500 that ran alcohol. To this day I am still not sure why other than 14 to 1 compression. What a pain in the ass that was. Plus I had to carry coolant everywhere because it would over heat. Running the hills though there was nothing faster. We were the hill kings until we bought quads and retired the bikes.

That makes sense, my 6 pack cooler is never empty ! :D and I never wore a backpack on rides...

Trinity is still great ! The did a stage 3 port job and head work on my ATC, gave me 3 jet sizes, one for break in, one was moderately lean, and the 3rd was lean. Bike ran flawless with endless power for years ! My hot rod 350cc Honda fourtrax 250r couldn't even touch it. I was so pissed. Long story short, I'll never use that shop again for anything. 4k in motor work and it never ran like it should have. Should've waited for ESR to get cylinders in stock . Lesson learned.

I thought about going the 500 route, with the '86 fourtrax. Everyone I spoke to steered me towards the big bore kit. So I did, it ran like a 4 stroke. Plenty of low end grunt. My buddy had a Suzuki 500 quad and he wasn't any faster.

I rebuilt that engine 3 other times. Those RD350 engines were just not quad engines. Made power, sounded bad ass, but horribly unreliable. Stators were also a problem.

The 370 made torque which worked well for a heavy rider like myself.

My wife rode a 89 250R. I have also had a Quadzilla for several years before the Banshee.

Stock tank although I thought it held about 3 gallons.

The dunes end in Mexico is a trip. The dunes just end in a sharp downhill, right into farmland.

I've been to Gordon's Well but never made the ride from the 78 side.Been to Mammoth Wash at the north end, sounds about the same as the south end...only not in Mexico.

We went to the Dunes Diner. That was fun. Kids liked riding in our friends sand rail. A little pricey for the food but a cool little place and worth it for the fun cruise there.
When I got pulled over in the cart I was on the paved road. Lesson learned. Will just cruise around camp and not go on the road in the future.

My son still has his 370, it has been converted to flat side's since this pic was taken several years ago.

The last time we went to Glamis was for NYE 1994.
The owner of Boardmanville was still alive. He remembered us, but wasn't well. Don was his first name wasn't it?
The first time we took the first gen V-8 rails down there was about 1988, and we went over to B-ville at about 5 in the afternoon. Didn't know anyone, etc. Parked the cars out front. We bought some pizza and some pitchers and grabbed a big table outside Older guy came out and gave our cars a very serious going over, asked where we were from, etc.
He bought us another couple pitchers, and he started drinking with us and bought some more. then some more. We found out he was the owner of the joint.
We bought a couple pitchers. It got dark.
Next thing we knew we were all pretty hammered. I asked him, "what time do you close?"
He said, "Whenever I run out of beer, or you guys go back to camp."
I looked at my watch. It was 3am....

Chuck Boardman. He passed away Dec of 99. Met him in the mid 80's. Nice guy he was. A little rough but get on his good side and your money was no good. Interesting way to run a business. :D

Nice Scooter BTW.

Chuck! that is correct!
What happened to that place? I think his wife carried on for awhile, and then something happened with the road or something? There are (or were) several dollar bills on the wall with our names and hometown on them.

Yeah that Bike was my son's #1 pride and joy...until his son was born. He is doing the top end on it right now, did about 4 seasons on it and it started to get a little tired. Damn thing is scary fast...to me anyway. Like riding a 100HP Chainsaw...:D

Jeannie closed the place a couple seasons ago. The BLM and railroad closed the tunnel at wash 10, and the county decided the graded road into B'Ville was a county road, therefore offroad vehicles were not allowed. Some of the trails were closed, and it just got to be a hassle to get in and out safely and legally. Business continued to decline.
Rumor has been someone bought the place, and was going to clean it up and re-open. I haven't stayed on that, as we've only been a couple times a year for the last couple years.

It was bought and re-opened but the same issues with access remain, except now it's real clean.

My brother toasted his stock 97 banshee crank back in 98 he bought at mission yamaha they got a new engine builder and said we may have something you will like they did a 370 kit some porting and misc other work gave him a hell of a deal it was one of their first deals they done. That motor ran very good and had great all around power. His banshee was a duner not a hill racer and this kit was more focused as an all around reliable stroker kit for duning type of riding not a single purpose deal like drags.

They began doing these kits later on for more people it also held its own running some of the built up banshees at olds too.Back then i rode a cr250 we go to glamis with bikes in truck,12 bucks for a case of beer, can of chili beans, beef stew, and only about 25-30 bucks for gas in truck there and back from OC.and no weekly pass needed.

You pretty much describe my own goals building my Banshee.Like a 5 gallon fuel tank is drag race oriented:DSure it's fun to shoot the hill a few times but the real fun is out there in the dunes.5Gallons just means I can ride longer before going back.

Edit..also so it has a range that can at least match the wife's 250R:)

We haven't been since New Years 07/08

In part because of finances, and these days a lack of interest..mostly because of the crap that goes on there.
I sure miss the way Glamis used to be.To a point I feel sorry for those who didn't get to experience what it used to be,or what a breakfast pizza is.;)

Same, I started going at 13 yrs old in 83'. No fees, no rangers, no helmets when riding to the store, camped in the little dunes out of a truck. We always rode 2 wheelers and by 17 we'd show up with a couple old atc 250 rs for night riding and an extra 250 2 wheeler as a spare. Fake ID's and partying but mostly there to ride, very little money, begging at Clean Gene's for welding and repairs, boardmanville, no GPS, 1776 beam cars, going to the highest razorback to find the roads at night to figure out where the f#$k you were, it was total adventure. I used to go up to the cleanest chrome framed 2276 rails and take my boots off and beg for hill rides. By the late 90's we had the Trinity stage 5 sand only 2 wheelers for hill racing, etc, then Robbie Gordon jumping down damn near the whole upper left side area of Olds, and more comfort but it was starting to change..... Last time I went it was packed w Lame ass Pit Racers who never get more than 1000 yards from camp, Sand cars that would need a 2,000 ft tall dune to be challenged, and cops everywhere. It's cool to hear the poster's first impression was pretty much what I experienced, only plus the law enforcement.....almost makes me want to go back, as my kids always look at my pics and ask about it but I doubt I will.

We really did have a great time. Our friends camp there frequently. Some are fire fighters and as a group spend a couple months at Glamis. These guys use their cars. They are good responsible drivers. They did tell me its crazy on holiday weekends. We went to Olds Hill on Friday and there wasn't much happening. Went to the drags Saturday night and it wasn't crazy. There was a guy on a banished with a pederbuilt transmission. He was Devin that thing and pretending to shift I counted 12 shifts on one of his runs. That was pretty funny. A guy in a nice Tatum showed up and did one pass then parked his car.
The best part was seeing my kids progress on their quad riding skills. Getting pulled over in my cart wasn't that big of a deal. Even though the ranger acted like I messed up his night and it was an issue he still let me drive the cart on the road back to camp.

Started in 1985. First drive out was a full moon. Seeing the Dunes in the moonlight was something I will never forget. I don't recall Gecko Rd having a name. We called it Motorhome road cuz that was all that was on it. We used to go in at the store and backtrack along the highway, then cut in to the low dunes until we got stuck(79 Celica pulling a trailer). We knew of Old and Comp hill but not China Wall. Hung it up in 95 when my first was born. Got back in in 2006. First trip for my boys was a full moon. Brought back happy memories.

was a much more simple time back then that's for sure.
There was no vendors row, just Clean Gene's and Dirty Bobs, and the Glamis store and Boardmanville had race gas at the pump!

Sure was. Quieter,peaceful....but this last trip New Years week was beautiful. Camped on Gecko, closest neighbor was at least 1000' from us. Not many Leos after Wednesday. Only two past our camp on New Years Eve. Best to take a newbie on a full moon. Coming up the last few hills from Brawley to Gecko In the moonlight is the best!

Kind of miss the canned Ravioli heated in the fire that you held with channel locks and a leather glove trying not to melt your plastic spoon or the canned tamales in the morning.
