Isn’t it based off of the weight of the car? Which is why you don’t need to wear a helmet in a pro r?

Anyone know what the weight cut off is? This speed car isn’t light and I’m wondering if it side steps that law as well?

i beleive its based off the engine size. 1000cc or under = helmets.

And the 1000cc is based off factory car model So a bore kit over 1000cc doesn’t matter.

I believe they changed the law specifically to deal with the pro R being over 1000cc

Pretty sure all SXS now require a helmet to be worn.

My question would be why wouldn’t you wear a helmet in any SXS. Regardless if it’s a requirement. It’s personal choice of course if your not breaking the law but given how quickly things can go wrong…..

When I first read the law.. it had engine displacement or weight..

Anyone know the weight? Because I’m pretty sure a speed would be over it.

There is no weight. You are thinking of AZ street registration that had a weight.

In CA It is based on engine displacement. Sub 1000cc - you need the helmet.

The law recently changed and now even with a Pro R you need a helmet.

Ask the sand car guys that have not worn helmets ever why they don’t wear them?

Bettter recheck that I’m pretty sure it’s about 2400-2500 minimum.just checked 2144-2480 dry weights from Polaris.

FYI..... Helmet law in AZ is under 18, ask me how I know. I see people up in Havasu and Parker all the time with kids and no helmets, but Ive been pulled over TWICE, once in Ehrenberg and once in Yuma both times by AZFG. In Ehrenberg she wrote me a ticket, it was like $600. I was lucky she was "being nice" and only got me for my son and not daughter also. Yuma let me go because my son had just taken his helmet off for a second on a levy road to fix his ear (folded over in helmet) and it was LITERALLY right when he popped out of a wash. Here's the link to the law, the code violation is ARS 28-1179.B

Well, I’ll say my part. All kids should have a helmet on. All adults should have a helmet on. Reason for adults is everyone that’s been in a sxs knows that the “hey let’s go for a putt,”ends up being 50mph down a sand wash.
And no I’m not a crazy safety person, but shit happens quick,
Besides all that, do you know how comfortable it is w a nice pci full face helmet w a head set in it cruising through the desert?lol

Point me to a helmet with air that won't break my 4 year olds neck and I'll gladly buy him one.

I don't know any sand car guys. I hate riding in sand. I'm assuming you know though?

I’m not a sand guy either. Been a couple times, and seen enough to know next to no one wears a helmet in their sand car out there.

It is their choice in CA… they by and large choose not to.

Last season (3) ran with just a neck collar. I want to do a full face to keep the sand out of his face.

thats tuff, my 5yo wont do a closed face or even MX style with goggles. We did the open face and goggles, and he loves it. Plus, he picked out and "designed" his own goggles at Havoc lol
In a perfect world I'd put him in a modular where the face flips up, but I'd still like to run a pumper on it so he doesn't overheat. He runs a mx helmet when he rides the 70 so don't forsee an issue, but it's pointless in the rail unless it's keeping sand out of his face.

All people on 4 wheels should wear a helmet to cover the look of embarrassment for not being on 2 wheels!

I’m not sure why people don’t want to wear a helmet in a sand car, SXS, or any off-road vehicle. Just keep a hat in the vehicle and put it on when you stop so you can still “look cool”. I wear a 3/4 helmet with tinted goggles on the family rides and half the stops I don’t take either off just because I don’t want to get my sunglasses and hat out.

Personal choice.

I don’t see many people other than kids wearing life jackets on boats either.

Couldn’t disagree more.. especially with kids. Kids necks aren’t generally strong enough to support the weight of helmets in rough conditions.. if they are in the car properly and the car has a real cage they aren’t getting anywhere near anything that’s gonna hurt them. Honestly if the car is right and seatbelts are tight I don’t see any reason for helmets on the adults either..

Couple of kids died not that long ago when the parent went through whoops and the kids had helmets in the back.. broke both of their necks. I couldn’t even imagine stopping and finding my kids dead in the backseat.. horrifying.

I can’t imagine going fast enough through the desert to break the necks of my children.

The reason for the helmet (if the car is sized and designed correctly) is also to protect your neck when used with a HANS device… which no one uses when playing anyway.

You are more likely to get a neck/spine injury than a head injury out there in the dirt.

I believe the debate of helmets, we will all never agree on.
So…. Bottom line. Lol
Kids have to wear them according to the law.
Everyone had valid points.
In SxS's not rails correct?

What makes a rail any safer than a SXS?

The law in many states that allow adults choice to wear a helmet is that kids under 18 need to wear them.

Never said it was, the question was about if the law requires it in a rail, or a sxs over 1000cc.

Is it still that way in Utah?
I haven’t been since 2007-8ish
Your state rangers were kind enough to come to our camp (because of our out of state plates) 😉and inform us of the laws there.
Adults were free to wear one or not, kids had to.
Kids in our camp were posssd off they were required to have undergone some state riding safety course and cert or they couldn’t ride.
However, in Utah they allowed riding doubles on quads.
Strange rules but we still managed to have a great time.
Do they still allow riding double?
Helmet laws still the same?
