If you're talking about a BBC then we like the Powermaster starters. FYI Gen IV, V & VI all use the same starter

If it is some sort of Gen IV outboard deal, I have no idea. :D

Does Powermaster make a marine line --- USCG Approved starter ? I know Hardin does, looks like CP carries the Hardin as well, Teague sells the MSD/APS starter.

I'm not happy with the starter on my NA 700HP Pfaff engine, feels like it's struggling, so I'm in the market as well.

The choices for high performance marine (SAE J1171) starters for use under hatches are more limited.
BDmar referenced the Powermaster, but I'm not seeing that they meet that SAE standard. Hoping BDmar will chime in.
Meziere isn't far from home, so maybe I'll stop by and ask, but not seeing it on their website.

Obviously not such a concern for you V-drivers boats with open engines.

I want to buy one of the MSD ones. I might pick one up from Teague this summer.

.

Regarding the SAE J1171 rating, I occasionally run across people with enclosed engines that say "Eff it, a starter is a starter".

Don't do it! Gasoline vapor is heavier than air. If a fuel leak occurs, those vapors collect in the bottom of the bilge and engine compartment, right where the starter is.

If you're out boating on a weekend and your starter craps out, don't go to Autozone and buy a "temporary" automotive starter. Put the boat on the trailer and go home.

The marine approved starters have spark screens over vent openings and a couple other construction details that make them safe to use in a boating application.

One of my wife's best friends lost her brother in a bilge explosion. The fuel filler hose had loosened at the tank inlet, and it allowed some raw gas to get into the bilge. When he turned the key to start the boat it exploded. He suffered horribly from the burns before he passed away.

Now that boating season is starting up, it's a good time to check your fuel system and make sure it's safe. Always run your blower when fueling. I always raise the hatch and make sure there's no fuel vapors present.
