About a 50% increase at primary house but I haven't looked at usage. Havasu is auto-pay so I need to look at that one.

Its funny watching the local news this morning San Bernardino issued a burn notice- no fires allowed due to high air pollution levels- what the fuck are people supposed to do to warm their houses? After the latest rain how are air pollution levels so high??

I don’t want to turn this into a bash CA thread but god damn….

I love CA but can’t stand the clowns running the county/ state.
Who enforces that? Does CA have fireplace police now?😁

Just wait…..
5-7 years and it will be way way higher!

I can’t believe how some people can survive this! if you’re in a lower pay scale family must be terrible to just go to the gas station or cook a meal!

fire wood will go way up also…. Just because !

The best is they’ve been prepping us since before the Kraine invasion. Electricity up ✅. Gas ✅ Propane ✅ Natural Gas ✅. Wait til next year’s. pellet fuel prices. Any excess product went to Europe this year because they were paying so much more for it.

I get headaches from heaters (Both car and house) so we only use them in the morning for maybe 10 minutes to take the edge off. 68 is the max temp. I like sleeping in the cold (So Cal cold). My gas bill has never gone over $80 and we have a gas oven, gas stove, gas water heater, gas dryer, and gas heater.

Whats your AC bill in the summer to keep the temp at 68?

Yep..If I have the heater on over night I wake up feeling like $hit until I get fresh air. Not sure why. Just add a extra blanket if its that cold.
Carbon Monoxide has that effect on people, I'm sure regor and crew would concur, that explains a lot of things 🤣

My wife allots her house funds in her own way.

There's money for manicures, pedicures, botox, hair coloring, pinot noir and cabernet. Meanwhile
I sit to watch tv with two blankets on. If I want it warmer I bring in wood and build a damn fire. LOL
She was telling me about the price of gas going up and how I needed to put on another sweater. Then her family came to visit and somehow
the thermostat get set to 68. It's like $5 dollars to warm up the house a few degrees every morning.

I go out to my shop and use my little propane heater to warm me up. I have a few 5 gallon bottles I picked up at vacant houses over the years.
I bring em home and store for the winter, LOL . Like a squirrel.

With her family in town we are firing up the pizza oven outside tonight. I'm thinking this is like four warm nights worth of wood going up in smoke here.... oh well. Keep Mama happy and all things seem to go better.

F' me! We've had snow on the ground off and on, and not the best insulation. Pellet stove for heat runs a bag to 1 ¹/² bags every 2 days...5.25 a bag. Would a heat pump be cheaper to run out there? Or is the electric out of hand as well?

Heat pumps are pretty much the most efficient form of heat (unless you have lots of trees and a wood burning stove)

What makes heat pumps different from other forms of heat is that they don't actually generate heat, they just move it from one place to another, this means they can put more BTU's of heat into your home than they actually consume to do so.

I've never had one. I was working near one on a commercial building once, and about froze my ass off! That was when I figured out the concept🤣

You can get heat pump HVAC, water heaters, even clothes dryers.

Since heat pumps actually output cold air as exhaust, a water heater or dryer could help with cooling your home if you live in a warm area.

Some of the horror stories scare me. But that said. 2 story close to 3k sq feet. And we heat our jacuzzi 1-3 times a week. We’re about 60-80 average. Now when we have people house sit and they forget to turn the pool heater off we’ve seen 300 for that month. Pluses and minuses. The pool was 101 in the winter when we came home so we night swam. Lol.

When we renovate our pool, I’m putting a solar heater in.

It won’t heat it completely, but I’ll be money ahead by relying on gas/electricity to bring it up the last 10 degrees or so, versus using gas/electricity alone to bring the temps up 40 degrees.

The main heater will likely be a heat pump unit, those are all electric.

Stay tuned as I'm about to install a new HVAC system in our house. 4 ton heat pump variable speed inverter compressor/fan and vs air handler.

Job we are on just had similar installed. $16,500. Regular gas furnace bids were 20k!

They ran a 14/2 romex to heat pump. Looks like some hack work. They claimed unit is only 4.5 amps. Unit clearly showed made in China on the box. They fired it up and it had issues first day. Lucky they still owe and are wanting it resolved before payment. My AC Guy was out of commission from a recent surgery so he could not bid it. They hired a local guy that has a brick and mortar shop within a mile.

This is a self install and under $6k all said and done with 10 year warranty. Call me crazy but I'm sold on it for the cost.

I will check tomorrow what the manufacturer is. The installation was hack looking. Which is probably why it's not working right. Not the equipment. For that price and self install I would be doing the same. My plans for addition are almost done.

Owner/builder here as well and started our 866sqft addition 3 weeks ago. Excavated, formed, rebar, etc and it won't quit ranning for inspection to pour the raised foundation. That and the holidays have put a damper on things for us but we do have a roof over our head.
I didn't want to do this project in the winter months but it is what it is...
Good luck with your project

I just had a similar 5 ton, 19 Seer variable unit installed, it was a bit over $14k…but no more $800 summertime power bills (I hope). I’m hoping it pays for itself in 5 years or so.

I live in Temecula and got the notice mid-last week from SCG about expecting bills to double -- one day later came the bad news in the mail and it was slightly more than double. My plan is this -- tomorrow I'm going to call SCG and tell them I don't have the money to pay such an outrageous price increase (I'm a senior citizen -- over 75 -- retired and living on a fixed income). I'm curious what their response will be -- what do they plan to do if the bill is not paid? Come shut off the gas? Or, have they got some Newsom/Biden assistance/strategy they are keeping a secret for us 'old' folks. It will be interesting to hear what they have to say.

I feel that the vs inverter compressor and fan is the ticket to energy savings. Let's see where this takes us.

There are usually "discount" programs for seniors and lower incomes. I don't know how much they can help, and what the threshold is, but worth looking into.

Curious ...where is the pool located, how many gallons, and how are you heating it?

we are located in Castaic - it's about 24k gallons and jacuzzi is 8'round 3-4ish deep.
Gas pentair heater
I also corrected the orig. post to be more clear on the temp of the pool 🙂
And should probably take a closer look at this months bill from others responses to see the rate /price increase.

The gas company may offer a more level payment plan, so you can pay more all year 'round. LOL

It seems like when fuel prices come down, utilities go up.... I guess energy and utility companies are going to suck the money out of the consumer one way or another.

Supply chain difficulties causing shortages for mundane items
Skyrocketing energy costs.
Egg shortages

Yep. We're on that path.......

2024 can't come soon enough.

If Biden gets back in we are FUCKED
Went to Costco yesterday to get our normal stuff and they were out of eggs ( we go thru alot of eggs). Never seen Costco out of eggs.

Wife goes to Albertsons and grabs a dozen eggs for $9. WTF..... how are we faced with an egg shortage?? Over Thanksgiving it was a turkey shortage.... and there was rumor of a diesel shortage- Its alwys something.....The plandemic is over, people and companies are back to working like normal pre- covid, not sure how these supply chains issues are still riding the plandemic coat tails.

Our SoCal Gas bill this time of year is normally around $45 per month but it's now $80. This is with running our heater for Zero Days, so basically just running a gas water heater and stove. What's with the 75% Increase???

There was a bird flu pandemic in birds. A lot of birds that would have been used as a food source died.

Remember the $1.8B in settlements they had to pay out for the 2015 Aliso Canyon Gas leak? That was the largest leak in the history of the world.

Guess who pays for those? And I believe they can no longer use that area for nat gas storage.. so that means they are further subject to commodity pricing because they have less supply on hand.

These rate increases started almost a year ago. My last couple gas bills in early 2022 were the highest ever.

When CA / consumers started suing and persecuting the utility companies for fires and leaks, is when all the pre-emptive outages and massive rate increases really started hitting. “Fuck around and find out” - Your friendly utility company
