SOLD!

For sale is a pair of Monty Racing built V8's on Evolution Marine custom 25" offshore midsections with Mercury 4-hole CLE counter rotating lowers. Fresh water use ONLY!

Motor specifics:
  • Both motors started out as 4.0l blocks, were bored .020" over and had new Wiseco forged pistons installed.
  • Monty Racing performed his MOD I level port work magic with finger ports (see his website for info and costs http://montyracing.com/html/price.html)
  • Both motors run stock air box with mid-bore carbs and large (3-screw) throttle plates. VRO pumps have been removed (premix only).
  • Hand lapped reed cages with Boyesen reeds.
  • Port motor has stock 6700rpm powerpack, but starboard motor has CDI 8500rpm powerpack.
  • Port motor dynoed 381hp/339tq, starboard motor dynoed 383hp/340tq.
  • Evolution Marine lightweight fiberglass lift off cowls with Johnson Offshore 1 decal set. These have a few small spider cracks here and there from age but are in really good shape. Very light for the size.
  • Starboard motor looks to have a water leak from the gasket under the regulator/rectifier. There is slight water evidence on the back of the block.
  • Starboard motor had a crack in the water jacket on the rear of the block which was welded years ago. No leaks now. This is in a non-structural area of the block.

These motors have roughly 200-225 hours on them. Ran a compression check the morning of July 6, 2016 in Las Vegas at 2100' above sea level, cold, throttles closed. Port battery might not have been fully up, but you can see the spread. UPDATE: I will be re-running the compression numbers where the motors are in FL soon to update withe a fresh battery and near sea level air pressure.

Results:

Port: Star:
1:133# 1:149#
2:135# 2:143#
3:132# 3:148#
4:136# 4:144#
5:131# 5:148#
6:130# 6:145#
7:130# 7:148#
8:127# 8:143#

Midsections:
  • Originally built by Evolution Marine
  • 25" with custom grafted offshore snouts
  • Dry stacked, with rear water outlets.
  • Exhaust adapters have been drilled for additional water inlet. These can be easily plugged. Currently, I have a Jabsco water pump in the boat that pumps water to each mid using 3/4" hose to supplement the CLE water pumps, which are lower volume than the original V8 pumps. This has a one-way valve that prevents WP pressure from going out the adapter. This is helpful at idle to keep the motors fully cooled.
  • Starboard motor trim has a leak on the left low speed trim ram seal.
  • The white stuff on the mids is just hard water. Needs a good cleaning with some CLR and will look like new.

Lowers:
  • 4-hole CLE's with custom adapter plates.
  • Fresh Merc hi-perf gear lube ~5hrs ago (April, 2016).
  • New water pumps, April 2016
  • LH is straight skeg, 1.87 ratio, small shaft.
  • RH is swept skeg, 1.87 ratio, small shaft.
  • Custom shifter linkages use modified Mercury shift shafts (push/pull to rotate).
  • RH case had a crack to the left of the pinion where a broken pinion cracked the case years ago. This was welded, then JB welded inside and out and does NOT leak.

Motors are currently in Port St Lucie, FL. $10,000 for the pair, plus shipping/crate. $5,000 each, if the left goes first. If you buy the pair, I will include the steering rams, wing plates and tie bar! Would prefer a local pickup. Would entertain Merc 2.5 15" factory offshore midsection on partial trade. Questions? Email [email protected] or call 702-324-4449.

Selling the Scarab and putting the STV back together. No one who's looking for a fishing boat wants or needs this kind of power, so it makes more sense to pull the motors and sell them separately. The boat will likely go back East and get sold in FL.

I wish I was in a position to buy the whole setup. I love this boat. Unfortunately being in escrow on a house has depleted any toy money I have and will have for a while.

Keith those are some solid engines done right, you should have no problem with selling them, when I sold out my V8 stuff I had a bunch of ppl from the Bahama Islands buy them.

You might be surprised how quick she would sell back east. I think you may do quite well with the recent trend in having a 70+MPH fishing/diving/island runner. Just my .02.

As stated, I love these boats and yours is a clean example of what a Scarab should be! ;) GLWTS

Thanks guys. I tried to be thorough as I would want a seller to be. Knowing all the good and bad makes an educated sale and no one comes out unhappy.

These are cross posted on another website that is predominantly East Coast guys, so we'll see what happens. The boat will go to FL in the near future, with or without the motors. If it goes with the motors, I'll pull these and repower it with stock power for a quicker sale.

Curious what you'd want to sell the whole package for?

I really feel it's worth more if I part it, but to save the effort, I'd take $30k for the whole rig as it sits. It has it's own nuances though, it's not a start and drive type of boat...which is why I'll likely repower with stock engines and make it turn key again before selling it.

Posted above...but someone would have to get on the ball quick. One of the motors has been "spoken for", but nothing is in stone until I have cash in hand.

The boat is now back in FL...Port St Lucie area. I guess they have some magic air back there...everything seems to be faster on the East Coast. Same boat that ran 72 on her best day out here ran "deep into the 70's" back in FL. Gotta get that GPS number, but she runs good.

Motors are still for sale as a pair or possibly separate. Boat is for sale as well, as is or without power. Contact me for more info.

Do you think it might have something to do with it now being at sea level and running in salt water???

I'm sure the 450' elevation drop from Havasu to sea level probably has something to do with it, but it hasn't been in salt water (yet). Everything just seems to be faster down there.

I have two more motors worth of parts in the garage...I want to build something for the STV, but it won't be only 380hp. ;)

For sale is a pair of 380+HP Monty Racing built V8's on Evolution Marine custom 25" offshore midsections with Mercury 4-hole CLE counter rotating lowers.

These motors have roughly 200-225 hours on them. Ran a compression check this morning (July 6, 2016), cold, throttles closed.
Midsections:

Lowers:
  • 4-hole CLE's with custom adapter plates.
  • Fresh Merc hi-perf gear lube ~5hrs ago (April, 2016).
  • New water pumps, April 2016
  • LH is straight skeg, 1.87 ratio, small shaft.

  • RH case had a crack to the left of the pinion where a broken pinion cracked the case years ago. This was welded, then JB welded inside and out and does NOT leak.

Motors are currently rigged and running on my 30' Scarab center console in Stuart, FL. Can demo for serious buyer. Steering rams and wing plates NOT included. $12,995 for the pair, plus shipping/crate. Would prefer a local pickup. Will only separate if the left goes first. Not interested in trades at this time.

Questions? Email Keith@[nospam]stvboats.com - remove the [nospam] part or call 702-324-4449.

$13,000 for a pair of these is a lot of performance for the money :thumbsup

I'll be putting stock power back on it to sell the boat. Yamaha 300 4-strokes, or maybe some E-tec's.
