"chopped, shaped and thinly sliced" so it's kind of a home built Arby's sandwich.
Friend of mine was eating a steak um sandwich and I asked him if he ever looked at what he was eating. He stops, looks at it, LMAO!!!!

Weeks, maybe months later we are having dinner and my friends wife, forget how it came up, wants to know why he no longer eats steak ums. I laughed so hard..........

My Mom was/is basically a gourmet chef. We ate very well when I was a kid. Once in a while, we got to go to the A&W drive in, or I got to eat a Swanson Salisbury Steak TV dinner, and damn, what a great treat that was.

I had damn near every tv dinner growing up, latch key kid. Boiling lava brownies  always find out with the scoop in your mouth that’s now to late. Lol

i will say if anyone in a hurry, these things are pretty frickin quick n tasty. Next to where they have uncrustables in the store.
‘microwave then into toaster, cheese, butter, bread all tastes like a quick home made one.

Honestly, it was just a couple of weeks ago that I was saying to the wife that we should have a few frozen dinners on hand for those times that neither of us wants to cook and don’t feel like going out or fast fooding it.
Now that this thread came up I’m kind of craving them. 🤣

I love these memory lane threads.

TV trays !

My kids think I'm lying when I tell them about TV trays
Growing up in the 50’s-60’s all of our meals were served at a table, either the kitchen or the dining room. Then in 1970 my dad passed away and meals became much less formal. TV trays or simply taking your plate to your bedroom was much more common than actual sit down meals. The family dynamic had changed. Both of my sisters had got married and moved away and dad was no longer with us. It was just mom and I and we were both pretty busy with other things besides meals. I will say though that haveing family sit down dinners when I was younger did wonders for my formative years. It was the one time of the day that everyone got to catch up on each other’s lives and share things. It seems like today that families just kind of co-exist rather than spend time bonding. Moms, Dads, sisters and brothers grow up not even really knowing each other. Not having regular family time is probably why there is such a societal disconnect with so much of todays youth.

I came from the 60's where TV dinners were all aluminum and came out of the oven at 375. They had to sit and cool before you could touch them. My father would say, if you can't stand a little finger burn, you'll never be able to get a tattoo.

Costco actually has pretty good preprepared stuff. The lasagna, enchiladas, chicken pot pie and the chicken Alfredo are all pretty good. Made fresh just throw them in the oven for a bit and eat. Much better than the freezer section crap.

My Gabby is incredibly shy, when she was 13 we drove up and stayed at my friends camp in Maine. The weather sucked and for 3 days we did full sit down meals at the table inside rather than normally outside on camp chairs and picnic tables.
On our way home I was asking her what was the best parts and she said one them was all of us sitting at the table for meals.
This is a Kid that avoids situations like that normally.

Damn, looks good. So you guys ask for “cube steak”?

yup!

They'll look like this, basically the raw version of the frozen one above.

1701547333902.png

they'll sometimes have it out there in the meat counter, sometimes not, but the good thing about Staters is they'll always get you what you want. Just gotta talk to one of the butchers, and they'll sort you out.

I think people just stopped interfacing with the butchers, and just grab whatever they see. Make friends with the people, they WILL hook you up. There was a guy who used to work the one on La Sierra, would set aside full uncut short ribs for me.

We eat dinner every night as a family, sitting at the dinner table in the dinning room. So there are still some of us out there doing the family dinner thing. The girls get kind of pissed if we miss a meal (usually do to some activity), so I'm hopefully they will have fond memories of it all.

Good for you. I bet your kids are well adjusted with good communication skills.

There are only 2 acceptable frozen foods, pizza, and burritos, anything else is asking for disappointment.

Lasagna is deserving of a participation trophy also.
The 2 pack lasagna from Costco is damn good. I am a picky eater. But that beats most Italian restaurants.

When I was poor I used to get the Marie calendar frozen meals. The spaghetti and put the toast in toaster oven. And the chicken fried steak, toaster oven the chicken after 2 minutes in microwave and heat the potatoes in microwave.

The frozen cordon Bleu from Sam's club in the oven or air fryer is alright.

I'm sure they weren't that good for you, but believe it or not, around 20 years ago those Banquet Salsbury steaks used to be really grilled, mostly meat and really good. We tried the ones in question about a year ago and they are pretty bad, nothing like the original ones.

As a kid of the 60’s I had many a Swanson dinner!
On TV trays of course!
I still have the original set of trays I used at my grandparents house back then.
I’ve had to do some glueing and clamping over the years but they’ve held up and still get used most every weekend at our Sunday Family Dinner.

On the Family Dinner topic.
When my daughter turned 15, we have two younger boys as well, life was hectic and between all the sports, church, me traveling and other activities dinner eating together sometimes was getting less and less common.
I decided that no matter what, we would have dinner together every Sunday night.
Well, she’s 40 with a husband and 3 kids and between her and her brothers, the tradition has gone on all these years and now we have 18 of us at the house every Sunday night(homemade chicken tortilla soup with all the fixins tonight).
Anyway we wouldn’t trade it for anything and nothing is changing anytime soon!
My youngest son is an English teacher, so has a background in writing.
A few weeks ago he wrote a song about our tradition and my oldest son put it to music and sang it to us a last week.
There’s a few family references that may not make sense in there but I think you’ll
get the idea.
(Wish I could upload the sung version but site won’t upload the video for some reason)
I’m a blessed guy for sure!

… So…I get my groceries delivered every week and the shopper exchanged… one thing I requested for another …so I ended up with a couple of these and ate one for dinner…. It was actually tolerable… Except I chipped another tooth…pretty soon I won’t have anything to chew with😳

I have waited to reply to this, but can't anymore.

How the fuck can you guys eat that shit. Just nasty IMO. Bunch of processed shit.

You can make meal and then freeze them for when you don't feel like cooking. So easy and tastes so much better. Hell just put salmon with ancho chili powder, garlic powder, pepper, salt as needed. Then asparagus with garlic, red pepper flakes and some parmesan Reggiano cheese. Cook both in the air fryer for 10 min or so.

So spot on. I have a very close family friend That I visited often. It was just about 2-4 times a year. The family dynamic was such that you had to work to have any interaction with the kids. They were in their rooms most of my visits.
