I would imaging there are quite a few 8.1's sitting in junkyards that no one wants since its not an LS?
Also, could I do an adapter plate on a 4l80 or an nv4500 to just bolt it up to the original 454?
The 4l80 trans bolts up to the 8.1 and the older 454 the same. A 4l80 will also bolt up to a LS motor, so long as you have the correct flex plate with the crank spacer on it. The only wierd LS motors were the 1999-2000 2500 / 3500 6.0's - those had an extended flange on the back of the crank to mimic the SBC / BBC crank depth, on those they can bolt right up without the flexplate spacer.
