We are going to get a truck and I need some opinions from the truck gurus here. RDP, let's hear it! GMC, Chevy or Ford? No this is not an invitation for a Ford v Chevy discussion...just need info on vehicle engine, transmission or other issues I would need to be aware of...

We have Fords and Dodges at work, no Chevy’s, there is a reason. I don’t know how many of each but it has to be in the hundreds if not thousands.

A lot depends on the workload the truck will see, and it's purpose. Gas or diesel? Each has their own specific traits and issues.
All of the newer gas offerings have been pretty stout. Run into a few more issues with GM gas transmissions than Ford. Had a few DEF issues with newer GM Diesels, and none with Fords yet.

Between the two, I would base my decision on my preference for IFS (GM) vs solid front axle (Ford).
Exactly!
I’m not a fan of the torsion bar front end.
Too much stuff moving around for me.
Too many possible failure points.
The solid axle just seems more stout to me.
So, if there was no Dodge. I’d go Ford.
I went from Ford to Dodge actually.
And to the Ford from GMC, so🤷‍♂️

Ive owned about 10 GMC diesels (1/2 or 3/4 ton) over the last 10 years. I just bought a 22 F250 and I am very impressed so far. Nobody could believe I switched over but I have zero regrets thus far.
How many miles avg on those trucks before you replaced them?
I’m assuming you do a lot of miles?

The newer 10 speed is the same transmission in both trucks, chevy and fird.

I change trucks every 18mos it seems. Just get bored and try something else.

All of them, with the exception of 1, have been less than 40k miles.

Yes the transmission is the same, but there is something goofy with the GM TCM/ECM programing. I don't know it it's a power band, fuel or maybe line pressure differential programed into them. Mechanically speaking, the transmission hard parts seem to be good, but the software was a little issue. These were also "early" trucks, 18s or 19s? By now, they may have debugged the issues.

Side note: the 10 speeds are weird! Every transmission I've ever messed with had a pump situated in the pump housing driven directly by the converter. They run a gear driven pump lower in the pan.

It was my understanding the 10 speeds were the same in the 1/2 tons only. Is my understanding incorrect?

I just got notified that my 2024 GMC is being built, so my 2020 is now up for sale. 3500HD diesel long bed crew cab single rear wheel white 22,000 miles, perfect condition. BFG all terrains with 50% life left, 5,000 lb airbags in the back, front windows tinted. All stock otherwise. Interested?

What are you doing with truck? How much are you towing? Will it be a Dailey driver?

What’s your budget?
New or used?

I have had my ‘22 F250 7.3 Gas with 4:30’s for a year next month. I have 10,000 miles on it ( been driving it way more than I thought ).

I love it. Plenty of power. I barely get 14mpg highway and I get 10Mpg in town. Lifetime I’m 12.1mpg.
10 speed can be funny but if you change your driving habits it’s fine. Either drive like an old man or leave it in tow haul.

The diesels are bad ass if you have the money. Zero chance I would own one out of warranty.

I went from 2016 GMC HD Denali 4x4 Diesel to 2021 Ford F250 Pllatinum 4x4 Diesel.

Ford blows it away all day. Love this truck.

The GMC had that looming catastrophic lift pump failure I’m so glad I removed that concern.

When they are both perfect, the Ford F250 is just better top to bottom comparing top of the line to top of the line. Haven’t had Dodge in years.

That I don't know
I got side tracked and forgot to look it up, the answer is no but do actually look very similar on the inside. The 1/2 ton transmissions are the same

They are the same in both, GM pays Allison for the branding only.

Quote from the article:

Although they weren’t technically co-developed by Ford and GM (as the 10R80 and 10L80 half-ton 10-speed automatics were), both debuted for the 2020 model year, both are built in Ohio and both look similar internally...

My Dads Islander neighbor worked on development, before they came out he said the Allison branding was just going to be licensing as they were both based on the 10R/L80. He was very confident they were going to be bad ass.

What are you doing with the truck, that is the first question.

I own a 16 Denali Dually that’s deleted , and a 2022 Ford 350 Dually that’s stock. Both lifted, both cute, but they are VERY different.

I'm thinking of going with the 250 lease for two years then trading it in for the dually. We are going to get a cabover truck camper and hit the road. The dually is necessary for the camper we want to get.

I hope you post pics of this program when it comes together.👍
I’ve considered one.
Talking the wife into it vs a toy hauler has been challenging.

Don't get me wrong, I love Diesels but keep your fuel filter changed and the oil every 5k religiously or the fuel rail will fail on the Ford 6.7 and the Duromax. I've never had a Cummins. CP3 and 4 pumps are junk. When they fail all 8 injectors go with it. My 2017 6.7 failed at 97k and my 07 Duromax failed at 180k. When the fuel rail fails your looking at 9-10K.

My dad has a 19 or 20 2500 Denali. Badass truck! Tons of miles towing their 5er around. Not sure how many miles he's up to, but only had 2 minor issues. 1 was the radiator shutters were acting up and 2 was the crossover pipe blew a pin hole in it and apparently is a known issue.
