Looking to pick up a couple of good beginner foam surfboards for the kids. Girl just turned 7 and is about 4'4". Son is 8 and is 4'8". Both have stood up on my body board with me giving them a push so I think they will get it pretty quick. Can't figure out if a 7' from Empire or 8' Wavestorm is the way to go or something smaller. I figure a few of you have gone down this road with beginners and could share what worked for you. I have my own boards so it doesn't need to hold me. Purely for the kids.

Costco has a board during summers that fits the bill for kids very nicely.

I got a couple of the 8' wavestorms for the kids. They worked great! As the kids outgrew/outrode them, I kept them around for my younger nieces and nephews. they were the perfect board to start them on and have around as extras.

Exactly what I was looking for thanks for the feedback.

I'd just craigslist it to get some cheap foam boards to tear up before they learn how to rip

I didn't think about craig's. There's a guy selling 100's of these things. He must have stolen a semi during the riots.

So I’m in the same boat/board here’s a couple good options. If they have any sort of balance/skill don’t do a 8ft board.

I was thinking that the girl wouldnt be able to turn the 8'. I was looking at that liquid shredder earlier. Might get one of each and see what they grab.

My son saved up for the 6' CBC Slasher foam board (safer and does not ding). Good beginner board, more maneuverable and easier to handle than the 8' Costco board. Play It Again sells them new and they offer trade in credit when it is time to move up.

Last time in Kauai people just bought foam boards and boogie boards from costco and left them there when the vacation was over. It was cheaper than renting a board all week. who knows where they all ended up.

I have no source for a board but can offer a tiny bit of advice.
The kiddos are basically using long boards for a smurf which to me is perfect. Better to learn on small waves and have fun. Keep an eye on the conditions. 2 foot swells make for good learning. A 1-2 foot swell is ideal IMO. It teaches one to actually work to catch a wave. I only know this as I dated a girl that taught kids to surf.
If those kids only knew the lessons she really gave, LOL 👍

Start with the wave storm for the quickest learning curve .... and get out there today for some “distance learning” as conditions are perfect again . It’s been a good season so far

Don't know where you're at but there's a place in Saticoy (Ventura) "MARS".... has a large stock of Costco returns, out of season stuff, overstock.. bunch of boogie boards, foam surf boards and misc items cheap. Similar other places like "Bull Dog" are showing up as well with same type stuff
