I've been looking into this a bit, but not sure I want to make a move. We have a fleet of about 50 vehicles, mostly diesel, operating mostly in CA with some in NV.

We currently use SC Fuels, but I have been looking at FLEETCOR/Corpay, Fuelman, WEX, etc. The goal is to reduce costs with discounted fuel, and also improve tracking to make sure the fuel is going into our company trucks not into personal vehicles.

Anybody have experience, good or bad, that might help? I've read that the discounts can be up to 8% for mixed and 12% for diesel, but I've seen indications that those are introductory and that after the first year the discounts turn into rebates, and are not as good.

I also came across this fun article from a few years ago that makes me nervous about switching:

FTC Sues FleetCor and Its CEO for Fleecing Small Businesses With Mystery Fuel Card Fees

Files administrative complaint aimed at recouping hundreds of millions lost by customers lured by false promises of fuel savings
August 11, 2021

The Federal Trade Commission has filed an administrative complaint against FleetCor and its CEO, Ronald Clarke, for charging customers hundreds of millions of dollars in mystery fees associated with fuel cards. FleetCor, marketing under the “Fuelman” brand name and through co-branded cards with businesses around the country, falsely told its business customers that they would save money, be protected from unauthorized charges, and have no set-up, transaction, or membership fees. In reality, according to FleetCor’s own records, customers generally have not achieved the advertised per-gallon savings by using FleetCor’s cards.

We used to use arco until they got hacked. The switch to fuelman is good because we have more available stations, however we do not get discounted rates like before.(That i know of, we used to see a 10 cent discount on the pump itself) And it shows credit price too not even debit.

My company has about 80 trucks. We had WEX now we have CorPay. We enter mileage at the pump then use the BRIQ app to enter and code the receipts. Pretty easy

Our fleet in North of 100 and we are through WEX…. It works for us, and we have very few issues. Vehicle mileage & job number is tracked.

My company just switched from Wex to P-Fleet. From what I heard, there are better benefits from P-Fleet.

1000+ vehicles nationwide. We use WEX Shell - very solid rebates/discounts. I can put you in touch with our rep if you would like. Let me know.

SC Fuels is now owned by Pilot / FlyingJ. Not sure if an SC card works at Pilot/Flying J locations though.

Wouldn't hurt to have it. So far the sales folks at the different card companies I've talked to kind of suck at sales. If you have a decent rep, that might be handy to have. I'll send you a DM.

Hopefully the cards all work there. Our rep mentioned this the other day, and that we can use those stations for discounted pricing. Probably not as cheap as their SC Fuel cardlock stations, but better than others. Since SC Fuels doesn't give any kind of regular discounts or rebates, you need to go to their stations to get the good pricing. Looking at our card data, our drivers don't seem to do that even though we have two cardlock stations close to us. That'll be the immediate fix: try to edumucate the drivers better. I also noticed they love to put premium in ALL the gasser vehicles. (?!!)

So, the dilemma I'm facing seems to be unique to our company. Yup, apparently we are the only company in the whole wide world that wants to use a fuel card to track accurate fuel usage, while allowing card holders to fuel multiple vehicles.

Crazy, I know!

Did I mention that sales people suck?

If any of you work somewhere where you've figured this out, let me know. I'm convinced my current card holders are fueling their personal vehicles, but have no way to track it. Apparently 1 card is only good for either 1 driver and/or 1 vehicle.

I guess we could have a separate fuel card for every vehicle that gets left in the vehicle, with no security. Any driver of that vehicle can then use that specific card to fuel that specific vehicle, entering the odometer reading so we can calculate mileage and ensure fuel isn't going somewhere else. Anybody doing this?

Check out RoadFlex. I’ve been in the fleet industry for 25 years and highly recommend them. The big legacy players have tons of hidden fees and older tech. RoadFlex is far more modern and transparent.

Their website has comments about fueling security that seems promising. I requested a demo. Someone will hopefully reach out to me on Monday.

If you have telematics/GPS RoadFlex will be even more powerful at tracking fraud and misuse. Good luck with your decision!

That’s exactly how we do it with Wex. 1 card per vehicle or piece of equipment enter mileage at fill up as well as your driver id number.

So who at the company reviews all the data to insure everything is still correct? Or does these fuel card systems send red flags to you if something doesn’t look right?

With us each vehicle is assigned a fuel card. At each use a pin and odometer is entered. Then we have cards that is for Drag up tanks/equipment. This is where it can get tricky due to the amount of fuel that is getting pumped. Every truck has a fleet number which gets charged to what ever job its on. Every equipment is tracked by gps of hours of usage. So our fleet manager can see how much equipment/fuel is being used on jobs.
