Tire place put 60#'s in them, i put 50 before i left, oh well, over it.

I always run the maximum pressure that's stamped on the tire. IMO sidewall flex develops heat, and heat causes the blowout.

I've had one blowout in forty years of boating.

(How the fuck did I get so old?)

After p/u my new to me boat at Howard's Boats last October, checked out the date code on the tires 5+ years old ( 1 year older than the trailer), I tried to find replacements of the 235/15 carlisiles localy without luck! Decided to do a tire size and rim change went to a 17x8.5 american racing alum rim (2200 pound rating) most custom rims are rated at about 1500 pounds each) with Sumitomo 225-45-17 extra load tires with a 1809 pound load rating (regular passenger car are usually 1500 pounds each) . Bought the tires localy and the rims from a company in Texas (internet, rims lug nuts and valve stems were included) after mounting the first tire on the trailer I found that I needed to raise the trailer about 1 inch for the increased tire diameter. The backspace front space were right on when compared with the the original 15x7 steel wheels On the extreme trailer with the torson suspension you just remove the 5/8 bolt and re-clock the hub ( took 1 1/2 hours to mount the tires and re-clock the hubs in my drive way before the trip to AZ)

hope this helps !!

Finally got her out today in windy conditions, been in a 65mph taxi for a few years(the hallett) but the acceleration from 30mph to when my girl started screaming (about 70mph) was amazing, never even got it on boost really. Very happy and live this thing. Thanks for all the best wishes.

Am I the only one that runs car tires on my boat trailer?

RD

For those running 3 axles under a 3500lb boat you can do all kinds of things. If you are actually near the design of the trailer you are better off running "good" trailer tires. There are very few good trailer tires, most are Chinese garbage. Michelin Ribs are one of the best out there but you pay for them. Car and light truck tires are very soft and squishy compared to real trailer tires. This can lead to all kinds of interesting things as loads get closer to design limits.

I run car tires on my boat trailer's too. And I run LT truck tires on my other trailers with 16's. I got sick of dealing with shitty ST tires back when I was in the tire hauling/disposing biz.

No. I run round tires...so long as they're black. I generally carry 2 spares...mostly used tires from pick-a-part that I mount on spare rims with my harbor freight tire "machine". I haven't had a flat since I started carrying 2 spares. If I only carry one, I need it every time.

The demise of any tire is sitting idle for extended periods of time. I buy used mostly worn out junk for $10 each from the used tire place and they'll last a season or 2, then replace them with more used junk. Since I began this ritual, I haven't had a blowout.

Lots of factors in dealing with trailers and tires. Biggest factor is weight load on them and number of axels and inflated pressures. When I had smaller boats, car and truck tires from a good manufacturer worked fine for the most part. Got into bigger stuff.... Truck tires no longer fit the equation. Nothing but trailer tires.

Trailers get drug sideways and put lots of stresses on sidewalls and treads of tires, This kills them. Car and truck tires were not designed to handle this for the most part. The more axels, more dragging and twisting. Tons of issues and variables. Trailer tires have thicker and stiffer sidewalls and tread designs can be different also. Never had a single issue with actual trailer rated tires. Car and truck tires on bigger stuff, had blow outs, tread separations etc, even with tires that had 3000lb ratings per tire. My current trailer has 17.5 wheels and long haul heavy trailer tires with a 6005lb rating per tire= Worry free towing.

Rule of thumb, change tires out every two to three years regardless.

If your trailers are outside year round as most are, get some tire covers to keep the sun off them. Helps them live a little longer. Check tire pressures before you tow. Also not a bad idea is to carry a laser heat temp gun. Check hub and tire temps along the way, when stopping, and when getting to the ramp. More than 20 degrees avg diff in temps, you got a problem brewing from something. Heat also kills car and truck tires on trailers. Temp gun cheap investment to discovering an issue before things can get bad.

Have a great season guys !
