So...the wife and I slipped away for the week. It's our first time in NYC, and we're here for the St. Patty's Day parade. We took a red eye into JFK, so I'm feeling it, but any recommendations for places to check out or eat at? We're staying in Manhattan/mid-town west which seems to be pretty cool.

We'll see Wicked on Broadway and we checked out the 9/11 memorial today...much more emotional than I thought it would be, given my connection to the job and the 343.

McSorleys. Must go. Lots of history there.

If I get a few minutes I'll post up what I know about it and my experiences there.

Whiteworks went there and felt the vibe I was talking about. In fact I think he goes there whenever he's in Manhattan. Ask any taxi driver, he'll know where it is.

Very cool, a trip I'd like to go on at some point soon.

Carmine's is good Italian by the theaters. Grimaldis pizza on the other side of the Brooklyn bridge is awesome. Check to see if that location is still open.
For getting around on transit, download the kickmap app.

McSorelys is definitely in the list. The history of that place is so intriguing!

Gonna try to find a good slice of pizza tonight... :)

Starting to get the hang of the subway...growing up in LA has left me with a lack of experience in public transportation.

You won't get better pizza than Grimaldis Brooklyn location.

Take the subway and it's a 5 minute walk once you leave the station.

Taking all the men of age in the family to NYC in July for my cousins 21st. We will break him in at mcsorelys and continue the tradition as the last 2 come of age.

The halal guys on 53rd in front of the hilton mod town is the shit. The one with the long line, not the knockoff guys across the street. No line, no eat.

Peter Luger steak house, go for lunch you can walk right in, cash only. First subway stop across the Brooklyn bridge, 3 minute walk from there.

Went to the st. Patricks parade 5 years in a row.. Had a baby and have taken 2 years off next year I'm back .. It's a great time your body is going to hate you.. After the parade get the hell out of uptown and get mid town or south . You will be treated a lot better. Every swinging dick with a fire hat will be up town. Have fun!!! Hopefully ocfa will have a open bar!

When you visit McSorely's ask about the history, very interesting. The wishbones at McSorely's are from WW1. Also the FDNY museum is on Spring St.
Enjoy

I loved NYC! I really fell in love with that city. I have always thought big cities were cool, but never though I would like to live in one. Until I went to NYC. The place is just cool! Everywhere you look there are cool buildings, good restaurants, neat parks, just everything. Have fun, and be prepared to spend lots of money!!

Nate, should have hit me up...we were just there for a week....I had to work part of it, but J and Mom's went with. Jersey Boys is also a great show. Given your connection, McSorley's is cool for history....but you got to go to O'Hare's. It is located right down the street from 10 house which is across the street from World Trade Center. This was 10 house's pub and since 9/11 has become a spot for every Fire/Police/Port Auth to toss one back and pay respects. This is a little hole in wall pub where those prior and post 9/11 go to share a drink with those gone and still here. Bring a patch to put on the wall.

Take the Q train over to Juniors Deli in Brooklyn...it goes under the east river...great spot....their going to close it so it is a landmark you have to hit.

Italian - La Mela in lil Italy...hit me up for code word...

For breakfast in Times Square head downtown towards Madison Square Garden...its about 8 blocks past that...google Johny's...its a lil breakfast spot with a bar and two tables....hidden neighborhood gem...

You've got to try Keens Chop House. It's been there since the early 1800's. Lincoln, Roosevelt, and other greats have sat down to dinner, and to smoke a pipe, in the same place you can now.

My first visit to McSorley's was Sept 20th, 2001. We had the last half of that day to do whatever we wanted. My and a few others decided that having a few beers was on order, so we did.
After having beers all over town, we were drirected to McSorleys. There was a line to get in, however, if you were dressed appropriately you were shuffled right in. We were in our BDU's covered in crap and that just so happened to fit into their dress code.

Once inside, some FDNY guys, all in uniform or turnouts, made room at their table for us. The place was packed with guys that had been working the pile for days. Lots of emotion going on in that bar. There were a few women, but, mostly fire guys, covered in crap like we were. LOT's of drinking was happening. Lot's of "fuck this, fuck that, Osama Bin Laden is a dead mother fucker" etc etc etc

I wanted a beer badly, but, the place was packed and they only had a couple servers. It seemed like I waited an hour before the waiter came by for an order. The waiter was an older guy with long grey hair. You could tell by looking at him that he just fit in there. He was a fixture of this old bar. I watched as the waiter made his round, slowly working his way to our table.

Anyhow, after the local FF's gave me sips of their beers, the waiter finally makes his way to me. He comes up to me and says, "WA-DA-YA WANT!!!!"

I stood there for literally 2 seconds......2 FREAKIN SECONDS.......Deciding if I wanted a cocktail or a beer......2 freakin seconds...............and the waiter looks at me, shakes his head and left as fast as he showed up. LOL.

I was thinking "WTF just happened"

THe FDNY guys started cracking up, slapping me on the back and yelled, in their HEAVY New York accents..................

"All they got is light beer and dark beer. That's it!!!! No fuckin cocktails, no fuckin margaritas, none of that bullshit. JUST BEER, LIGHT AND DARK!!!!! When the old man gets here again, don't waste any time telling him what you want. If you do, he'll leave ya in a cloud of dust. REMEMBER, WHEN HE GETS HERE, ORDER WHAT YOU WANT RIGHT AWAY!!!!!!".

I thought, "OK, I can play this game. I got it."

The guy shows up again and I decide I wasn't gonna lose out on anymore of this precious drinking time and ordered "3 light beers!!" :thumbsup:D

My buddy does the same. 3 light beers for him too.

About ten minutes later, here comes the old man waiter with 6 beers in each hand. When he puts all 12 beers in front of me and my buddy, I'm thinking we just got some beers bought for us or something.

I wanted to find out why we have 6 beers each and I try to say to the old man "excuse me sir, I......"

Old man waiter just looks at me again, shakes his head AGAIN, and then, BOOM, Mother fucker was GONE!!! Adios. Man that guy moves fast for such and old fucker. :D

The FDNY guys start laughing their ass off at us AGAIN. One guy sitting next to me leans over and says to me "Here, at McSorleys, one beer will come in two fuckin glasses. That's just the way it is......Cheers, California" ( They called most of us from California "California" )

Cheers to you FDNY. :champagne:
